Early and accurate emergencyresponse system for Forest Fires1st prize – July 2016The Firebot team created an app thatenables hikers and others to report forestfires and provide location data and accurateinformation about the fire’s progress. Theapp, Firebot posts the position of the fire onGoogle map, analyzes the data to figure outthe best response and alerts people incommunities nearby. This was particularlyrelevant app for British Columbia, whereforest fires are a very real hazard.
Firebot has been invited to participate inTelus’s innovation labs to help bring theirproduct to market.
Farm to Table : ConnectingFarmers with Local Families &Restaurants2nd prize- July 2016The Open Farm team created an app to linkfarmers to local people and restaurants,thereby reducing waste, keeping pricesdown for consumers, with higher margins forfarmers, while ensuring families andcommunities get high quality, healthy food.The app enables people to place orders andconnect directly with the food producer. AnSMS via TELUS alerts customers when theirorder is on the way. The team used mangOHfrom Sierra Wireless to monitor the productconstantly, with updates every five seconds,to check the temperature, oxygen andhumidity levels.
{PAST HACKATHON WINNERS}Asset Management solution for Smart Cities3rd prize – July 2016The ShowMiAssets team created anapplication which enabled city managers tomanage a growing catalogue of 1000’s ofassets around the city such as garbage cans.The team validated the business model andtested the interest level of this IoTapplication with the TM Forum membershipcommunity of this significantly growingsector of asset management in cities.
Cities, Collaboration, and Ecology1st prize – May 2016The Garden Sharing team came up with asolution to connect people to create newways to grow food and collectively care forplants. A city and its citizens could makemoney through renting out their greenspaces and partners could monetize theidea in a number of ways – from promotinggardening tools to offering IoT as a service,through sensors in gardens which remindpeople when they need to water their plans.
Social Nudging : Smart City meets Gamification2nd prize – May 2016The City of Things team created an appbased around the concept of ‘social nudging’and gamification – do good things for yourcity and be rewarded. The app showed theability to offer citizens tasks they could do(such as pick up trash) in return for rewards,such as a reduced water bill. The dashboardwould show how much a person has saved orearned in a month, a real-time view of the‘health’ of the city and the top priorities foraction.
