Preface

TME 10 Desktop for Windows User’s Guide iii

PrefaceThe Tivoli Management Environment 10 (TME 10) provides acomprehensive set of systems management applications. Theseapplications reduce the cost and mask the complexity of managingwidely dispersed UNIX and PC computers in a client/server network.

TME 10 provides client/server systems management applications thataddress automated deployment, distributed availability, and usermanagement functions such as the following:

■ Software distribution

■ Client and server configuration management

■ Event monitoring and correlation

TME 10 also encourages a team approach to distributed systemsmanagement; senior system administrators can focus on analysis, strategy, and security issues, while staff administrators manage moreroutine tasks.

TME 10 Desktop for Windows extends the object-oriented userinterface for TME 10 to local and remote PCs. Administrators can thususe PCs to control the distributed environment.

Who Should Read This GuideThis guide is intended for use by system administrators familiar withOS/2, Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, and TME 10. Users of thisguide should have some prior knowledge of this software.

Prerequisite and Related DocumentsBefore using the information in this guide, you should be familiar withthe TME 10 Framework. Information about the Framework is presentedin the following manuals, which are prerequisite to this guide:

■ TME 10 Framework User’s Guide

■ TME 10 Framework Planning and Installation Guide

What This Guide ContainsThe TME 10 Desktop for Windows User’s Guide discusses the followingmajor topics:

■ Hardware and software requirements

■ Installation on Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2systems

■ Login troubleshooting

■ Removing TME 10 Desktop for Windows

■ TME 10 Desktop for Windows directory structure

Conventions Used in This GuideThe guide uses several typeface conventions for special terms andactions. These conventions have the following meaning:

Bold Commands, keywords, file names, or other informationthat you must use literally appear in bold. Names ofwindows, dialogs, and other controls also appear inbold.

Italics Variables and values that you must provide appear initalics.

Bold Italics New terms appear in bold italics when they are definedin the text.

Monospace Code examples appear in a monospace font.

Many procedures in this guide include icons in the left margin. Theseicons provide context for performing a step within a procedure. Forexample, if you start a procedure by double-clicking on a policy regionicon, that icon appears in the left margin next to the first step. If the fourthstep of the procedure instructs you to open another icon, that iconappears in the left margin next to the fourth step.

1TME 10 Desktop for Windows

The Tivoli Management Environment 10 (TME 10) desktop is thegraphical user interface (GUI) to TME 10. It is the GUI system throughwhich all TME 10-based applications interact with TME 10 users.

TME 10 Desktop for Windows is the complete TME 10 user interfaceserver running on Windows, Windows NT, or OS/2 systems. TheDesktop for Windows functions exactly like the UNIX TME 10 desktop.

Using the TME 10 Desktop for Windows, administrators can perform allof the same management functions from their Windows orWindows-compatible OS/2 systems as they can from a UNIXworkstation. All TME 10 applications run unmodified using the TME 10Desktop for Windows. Furthermore, TME 10 AEF (ApplicationExtension Facility) GUI modifications to your TME 10 application aredisplayed exactly the same on both the TME 10 Desktop for Windowsand the UNIX desktop.

TME 10 Desktop for Windows is very different from merely using anX-Window server on a PC and connecting to a UNIX TME 10 machine.Although using an X-Window server enables a UNIX desktop toredirect its output to a PC, you will find the following advantages ofusing the TME 10 Desktop for Windows:

■ Better performance—TME 10 Desktop for Windows is inherentlyfaster than a remote X-based server connected to a host.

■ Better security—Guaranteeing the authenticity of TME 10Administrators is a fundamental requirement to ensure networksecurity. TME 10 Desktop for Windows requires users to log in

The Purpose of This Guide

1–2 Version 3.6

and provides DES encryption for the login password.

■ Less resource consumption—TME 10 Desktop for Windowsperforms all user interface processing on the PC, avoiding anyadditional overhead on the UNIX server.

■ Windows presentation—TME 10 Desktop for Windows includesmodifications to the standard TME 10 desktop presentation tocomply with the Windows standard, which provides behavior andpresentation that is consistent with all other Windows applications.

■ Support of OLE text drag-and-drop—OLE text drag-and-dropenables you to drag text from one application to anotherapplication. Such drag-and-drop operations are not limited to TME10 applications. You can also drag text between a TME 10application and a non-TME 10 application.

The Purpose of This GuideThis user’s guide explains how to install and start the TME 10 Desktopfor Windows. It does not explain how to use the TME 10 Framework. You can find information about the Framework in the followingmanuals:

■ TME 10 Framework User’s Guide

■ TME 10 Framework Planning and Installation Guide

Note: You will find references to TME 10 command line interface(CLI) commands in these manuals. TME 10 Desktop forWindows does not include the CLI, however, and so TME 10Framework commmands are not supported.
