Pendahuluan
Introduction (Continued)
Central Logic in Resource-based View (RBV):• Sumber daya yang menjadi dasar keunggulan kompetitif harus
valuable (Barney, 1991)• Konseptualitasi mengenai value sebagai atribut sumber daya terbukti
masih menjadi problem (Kraaijenbrink, Spender, & Groen, 2010; Priem & Butler, 2001a) • Sumber daya hanya bias dikatakan bernilai (valuable), bila dapay
menambah nilai pada pelanggan produk perusahaan (Barney, 1991; Priem & Butler, 2001a; Sirmon et al., 2007)
Perlu identifikasi awal kondisi yang membuat sumber daya bernilai bagi perusahaan (firm ex ante)
Introduction (Continued)
yang relevan (benefit from assymetric information)4. Pengetahuan dan pengalaman para manajer (key role in decision
making base on resources value)
Introduction (Continued)
Resource Value in RBV
• Nilai dari sumber daya: valueable, rare, inimitability, substitutability• Resource Value: ex post capacity of a resource to increase
product market performance leads to circular reasoning (Priem & Butler, 2001a)• Sumber daya yang memungkinkan perbedaan kinerja
Resource Value and Product Market Value Creation: A Model
Resource Value and Product Market Value Creation: A Model Continued
Competitive Advantage• Superior Value Creation
• Value-creating strategies: reducing cost and increasing customers’ willingness to pay• Dalam istilah Porter (1985) a firm that has a superior cost position
has a cost advantage, and a firm whose customers have greater willingness to pay for its products has a differentiation advantage.
Resource Value and Product Market Value Creation: A Model Continued
Competitive Improvement• Pendekatan dengan
perspektif waktu• Perlu membuat
Resource Value and Product Market Value Creation: A Model Continued
PropositionsResource Value and Product Market Value Creation
• Proposition 1a: The better a firm is po sitioned ex ante in a product market, the higher the value of a resource to that firm.• Proposition 1b: The higher the level of competitive
improvement that is att ainable with a resource (or, equiva lently, the stronger the firm's ex post product market position), the greater the value of the resource to a firm.• Proposition 1c: The resource value is the same, irrespective of
the direction of competitive improvement—that is, a resource leading to a decrease in cost and one leading to an increase in customer willingness to pay have, ce teris paribus, the same value to a firm.
Propositions ContinuedResource Value and Product Market Value Creation • Proposition 2: The higher the level of complementarity
allowed by a firm's existing resource base resulting from competitive improvement the greater the value of the resource to a firm.• Proposition 3: For resources that un derlie discontinuous
change, firms with a stronger market position may at the same time have a resource base that exhibits negative complementari ties with such resources, and, subse quently, firms with a weaker market position may value the resource more highly than firms with a strong market position.
Propositions Informations Asymmetry, Uncertainy and the Role of Manager
• Proposition 4: (a) The more central the position of a firm in the network of customers, suppliers, and alliance partners; (b) the better the firm can act as a broker by bridging structural holes in the network of customers, sup pliers, and alliance partners; and (c) the more diverse the relationships of the firm to its customers, suppliers, and alliance partners, the better it can access information and, subsequently, the closer its willingness to pay for a resource (ex ante resource value) will be to the product market impact of the resource (ex post resource value).
Propositions ContinuedInformations Asymmetry, Uncertainy and the Role of Manager
• Proposition 5a: The more a manager's knowledge and information about a resource are aligned with knowledge structures from prior experience, the closer the firm's willingness to pay for a resource (ex ante resource value) will be to the product market impact of the resource (ex post resource value).• Proposition 5b: The more a firm's knowledge and information
about a resource are aligned with knowledge structures from prior experience that are built into its routines, the closer the firm's willingness to pay for a re source (ex ante resource value) will be to the product market impact of the resource (ex post resource value).
Propositions ContinuedInformations Asymmetry, Uncertainy and the Role of Manager
• Proposition 5c: A manager's prior ex perience with the focal firm and his or her experience with the focal firm's environment will jointly affect his or her judgment of the value of a re source to the firm; subsequently, the firm's willingness to pay for a resource (ex ante resource value) will be close to the product market impact of the resource (ex post resource value).
Discussion
perusahaan: (1)a firm's ex ante market position; (2) its ex ante resource base, which allows for complementarities; (3) its position in interorganizational networks, which gives it access to privileged information; and (4) the prior knowl edge and experience of its managers, which al low superior judgment concerning the value-creating potential of a resource
Conclusions
Four factors• Four factors that influence how a firm values a resource ex
ante—that is, before making a decision on acquiring or building it:
1. the firm's ex ante market position; 2. its ex ante resource base, which allows for complementarities; 3. its position in interorganizational networks, which gives it
access to relevant information; and 4. its managers' knowledge and experience, which allow superior
judgment about how to use the resource.
• These factors explain why the value of a resource may be firm idiosyncratic.
