Submittal and Guide Specification Structural Steel

FlameOFF – is a water-based intumescent coating designed for fire protection of structural steel for interior applications requiring ASTM E -119 testing for full scale/load bearing applications.

FlameOFF FCI – is a decorative thin film intumescent coating that consists of a vinyl acetate resin. It can be top coated to provide the desired color match requirements.

The recommended use for this product is fireproofing of interior steel beams, columns, tube steel, and pipes.

Product Features:• Designs for many types of steel section;• Decorative finish - provides a hard, durable, architectural

finish. Compatible topcoats available in a wide range ofcolors;

• Thin film coating - offers an economical solution toalternative fireproofing;

• VOC compliant;• Easy repair - If damaged, product can be patched easily;• Third party listing certificate.

Color Finish – Off White – smooth finish

Wet Film Thickness – 45.0 mils (1143 microns)

Dry Film Thickness – 30.0 mils (762 microns)

Solids Content – By Volume 69%

Theoretical Coverage Rate1075 ft2 at 1 mil (1002 m / at 25 microns) 36 ft2 at 30 mils (3.3 2 m / at 750 microns)

Calculating Dry Film Thickness In order to accurately calculate the dry film thickness the following calculation should be used: WFT=(DFT/Volume Solids) X 100

Limitations – Product must be top coated if there are environmental exposure requirements. Refer to FlameOFF Coatings, Inc. technical support.

Surface Preparation – All surfaces must be primed and must be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, loose mil scale, dirt, dust or other materials that would impair the bonding of FlameOFF to the substrate.

Fireproofing Topcoats

For interior conditioned space, topcoats are optional. For general purpose requirements,Contact Technical Services at FlameOFF Coatings, Inc to obtain a list of approved/tested topcoats.

** Intumescent coating must be applied to the required DFT and cured before a topcoat is applied.

Wide Flange Columns: B1077-1

Tube Columns: B1077

Pipe Columns: B1077

Beams: GL-N609

Beams (Protected Deck): GL-D784

Beams (Unprotected Deck): GL-D935

Maintenance – If coating becomes damaged, rebuild therequired thickness by spray or brush. When dry, smooth and finished. Topcoat may be applied. The repair area must follow all surface preparation requirements before reapplying the coating. The coating must be built back to the original thickness.

FlameOFF – ApplicationPrimer – must be applied to the steel substrate.

Dry Film - Wet Film Thickness

The applied thickness of FlameOFF - will depend on the size / shape of the substrate. The detail design will show the required thickness of each member. Contact FlameOFF Coatings, Inc. for a detail design guide.

Mixer – Use 1/2” electric or air driven drill with a slotted paddle mixer (300 rpm under load)

Mixing – FlameOFF must be mixed using a 1/2” electric air driven drill with a slotted paddle or Jiffy mixer blade. Mix material for a minimum of 5 minutes to achieve the necessary texture required before spraying.

Thinning – Do not thin

Airless Spray – Use 1.0 gal. per minute electric airless (minimum)to provide an operating pressure of 2,000 p.s.i. (140 kg/cm2).** Remove rock catcher from siphon tube.**

Spray Gun – Contractor Gun (with filter removed) or equivalent.

Spray Tips – 0.021” - 0.025”

Fan Size – 4”-10” (depending on section being

sprayed) Hose Length – 50’ (15 m) maximum

Material Hose – 1/2” I.D. ** Listed below are general equipment guidelines for the application of this product. Job site conditions may require modifications to these guidelines to achieve the desired results.**

Cleanup – Pump, gun, tips and hoses and mixer should be cleaned at least once per day.

Safety – Follow all safety precautions on the FlameOFF FCI material safety data sheet.

Overspray – All adjacent and finished surfaces shall be protected from damage and overspray.

FlameOFF - Application Procedures

General - Product may be applied by brush or spray application. Do not apply with a roller. Spray application is recommended for the optimum appearance.

Airless Spray - A single coat built up with a number of quick passes allows greater control over quantities, thickness and finish. **Note - In most conditions, it is advantageous to apply two thin coats rather than one thick coat.**

Application Rates - Spray: 45 mils (1.14 mm) per coat (wet) Brush: 10 mils (0.25 mm) per coat (wet) **7 hour recoat time. See Application Manual.**

Wet FilmThickness – Frequent thickness measurements with a wet film gauge are recommended during the application process to ensure uniform thickness.

Dry Film Thickness – Final thickness must be measured using an electronic dry film thickness gauge. For method of thickness determination and tolerances refer to: AWCI Technical Manual 12-B (Standard Practice for the Testing and Inspection of Field Applied Thin Film Intumescent Materials); and International Building Code - IBC 1705.14

Application Conditions Minimum - 45°F (7°C) Maximum - 105°F (40°C) **Do not Apply when humidity is greater than 95%**

Shelf Life - 9 months (when kept at recommended storage conditions and in original unopened containers) as per the FCI material safety data sheet.
