Author Profile
Before writing and illustrating Dinotopia, James Gurney painted reconstructions of ancient civilizations for National Geographic magazine. He has illustrated seventeen stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, including The World of Dinosaurs. His Dinotopia artwork has won the Hugo, Chesley, Spectrum, and World Fantasy Awards and has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the Delaware Art Museum. His most recent books, Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn’t Exist (2009) and Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter (2010), are based on his daily blog gurneyjourney.blogspot.com.

Author Profile
Born in Dublin, Jonathan Swift (1667–1745) studied at Trinity College and was eventually ordained a priest. Most of his books were first published anony-mously or under a pseudonym, including Gulliver’s Travels, his most famous work.
Artist Profile
Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was an English art-ist and a leading figure in the early 20th century’s Golden Age of Illustration. He interpreted scenes from fairy tales, opera, and Shakespearean comedy with whimsical and romantic images that continue to enchant children and adults alike.

Berta (1890–1976) and Elmer (1889–1973) Hader were married children’s book illustrators who collabo-rated on more than 70 titles, writing about half of them as well. In 1948, they won the prestigious Caldecott Medal for The Big Snow, earning recognition for creat-ing the year’s “most distinguished American picture book for children.”

The scion of a noted family of Staffordshire potters, Louis Rhead (1857–1926) began his career as a ceramic artist. He was a prominent figure in the poster art craze of the 1890s and remains best known for his illustrations for children’s books.
