The ever eluding ideal of peace, especially in the modern era of strife and destruction, makes VIBGYORMUN perhaps the most relevant civilised approach to contemporary international issues, positively touching the lives of participants and preparing them to be better global citizens through quality experiences of debate and deliberation that emphasizes on collaboration and cooperative resolution of conflict.

VIBGYORMUN helps envision a world comprised of civically engaged people who strive for peaceful, multilateral conflict resolution and equitable, sustainable human development. It empowers students to develop an all encompassing perception of their social, cultural and political milieu vis-a-vis the rest of the world. The impetus to think concretely for an indispensable change lays the firm foundation for insightful and reflective research, discussion, debate and resolution.

Cooperative, hands-on, experiential learning allows students to confront a range of topics with the perspective of their assigned country or organisation. Through these experiences - during preparation in Committee Sessions and Hallway Caucuses - students develop an appreciation of differing viewpoints, experience the challenges of negotiation, see the rewards of cooperation, broaden their world view, and discover the human side of international relations and diplomacy.

The dedication and commitment of the VIBGYORMUN team and their impelling desire to make it a success have assured me that a conference of the magnitude of VIBGYORMUN with its share of hurdles would provide its delegates and the faculty advisors an experience like none other. With drastic changes spiraling into crises, there is no time for comfort. It is time to dare. The social troubles have become a frequent phenomenon. People are coming to realise that even the most stable economies are facing large-scale uncertainties. Wars world over are not seeing quick conclusions. Rising unemployment, reduced social welfare, and ever-widening disparity between the rich and the poor, have resulted in intensified social contradictions and increased dissatisfaction among the people.

Simulations like VIBGYORMUN provide the youth with means to give a concrete shape to our expectations of living in harmony without any dissension. Empowering the youth with such invigorating initiatives is also a true reflection of the tenacious vitality of VIBGYOR and it constitutes a precious wealth of the international community.

VIBGYORMUN 9 is back in Mumbai! The past years are a testimony to how the organising committee thrives in the face of greater challenges. I wish them to continue to flourish in the good work that has led us to this ninth edition.

VIBGYORMUN is not only a school event but it also takes place of pride amongst the most sought after school events in the country. Students discuss, debate and deliberate on social, economic and political problems facing the world in order to come to terms with nagging world issues that threaten to endanger peace and harmony in the world. VIBGYORMUN also provides an admirable learning experience for our young learners to be acquainted with and try to resolve glaring global issues.

This is in accordance with our commitment to educational excellence and our relentless efforts to make our students global citizens in a nurturing collaborative environment where they can co-exist and prosper without hatred, terror, hostility, religious prejudice and other ethnic barriers and obstacles. VIBGYORMUN 9 aims to attain this objective. In these turbulent times when social evils like unemployment, poverty, terrorism and political upheavals are rampant, simulations like VIBGYORMUN 9 provide youth with the opportunity to tackle these problems through meaningful dialogue so that they can continue to live with dignity in a harmonious environment.

VIBGYORMUN, amongst the most coveted and admired MUNs in the country, was initiated in 2011 at VIBGYOR High - Goregaon (West), the flagship school of the VIBGYOR Group of Schools. Planning and executing an event of such magnitude is a tremendous task for the Organising committee and I really appreciate the zeal and enthusiasm with which they make it such a memorable event for all the delegates. In the past years, they have proved that no task is too great for them. Chief Guest Opening Ceremony

Following an extensive career focusing on environment and development in government and international organizations, Erik Solheim was Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme between May 2016 and November 2018.

From 2007 to 2012, Solheim held the combined portfolio of Norway's Minister of the Environment and International Development, and from 2005 to 2007 served as Minister of International Development. During his time as Minister, Norwegian aid reached 1 per cent, the highest in the world. Solheim also put into place the Nature Diversity Act, which many consider to be Norway's most important piece of environmental legislation in the last 100 years. The Norwegian Climate and Forest Initiative, in which Norway cooperates closely with Brazil, Indonesia, Guyana and other countries to conserve rainforests, was also established under Solheim. This initiative provided critical input to the establishment of UN REDD, the global coalition to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries.

Solheim is also an experienced peace negotiator, having acted as the main facilitator of the peace process in Sri Lanka from 1998 to 2005. The peace process led to a ceasefire and the Oslo Declaration in 2002, where parties welcomed a federal state in Sri Lanka. He continued to lead peace efforts in Sri Lanka as Minister, and has contributed to peace processes in Sudan, Nepal, Myanmar and Burundi.

In October of 2016 during a trip to India, Solheim joined forces with now UN Champion of the Earth, Adv. Afroz Shah, to participate in an “On the Ground Action” campaign taking place at Versova Beach in Mumbai. Soon after, a global war against marine litter was announced, effectively launching the UN Environment Clean Seas campaign which has been leading the global revolution against plastic pollution since its establishment in 2017.

He has served as UN Environment's Special Envoy for Environment, Conflict and Disaster and a Patron of Nature for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. He has also received a number of awards for his work on climate and the environment, including UN Environment's Champions of the Earth award, TIME Magazine's Hero of the Environment, and an honorary doctorate from TERI University in Delhi, India.

Aaditya is the Chairman and President of Yuva Sena, a youth wing of Shiv Sena. A law graduate of K C Law College, his first book of poems, 'My Thoughts in White and Black', was published in 2007. The following year, he turned lyricist and released a private album Ummeed, for which he wrote all the eight songs.

A dynamic leader and a people's person, Aaditya has been active in politics for around a decade. He has always been at the forefront to fight for the causes of social concern. He was instrumental in imposing the “Single use Plastic Ban” in Maharashtra which has been replicated by many other states in India.

He has also been working with Adv. Afroz Shah and the ground team of citizens for the clean-up and rejuvenation of our rivers and oceans.

He is also the president of the Mumbai District Football Association (MDFA).

Afroz Shah is synonymous with the world's largest citizen-driven beach clean-up project. He spearheaded the Versova beach clean-up drive. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) called it the world's largest beach clean-up in history and awarded Shah UN's top environmental accolade – 'Champions of the Earth' award (Equivalent To Noble Prize In Field Of Environment Protection) at Cancun in Mexico, making him the first Indian to achieve such a feat. So far, he has been successful removing 23+ million KG plastic and filth from the ocean, beaches, creeks, rivers, forests. He has been tackling marine litter by cleaning the rivers, beaches, ocean and mangroves since 2015.

Inspired By Afroz Shah & Community Cleanup, UN Launched Global Clean Seas Campaign. In Afroz's Words “The cleaning will continue till the ocean is made plastic and filth free”. Shah has shifted focus to the Mithi river since November 2018.

Afroz has been voted "Indian of the Year, 2017" by CNN News18 and International Sensation Award by DARPAN - CANADA 2018. Tor Dahlstrøm came to Mumbai in 2015 to establish the Norwegian Consulate General. His association with Asia has been mostly focused on East Asia, especially Japan. Before coming to Mumbai, he was responsible for Norwegian economic/business relations with India in the Foreign Ministry. His work with the UN has formally been on trade and development issues in at the UN in Geneva.

“Environment protection has had my attention over many years, but become more focused on fighting marine pollution especially plastic when I joined the Versova Beach initiative championed by Afroz Shah three years ago,” says Tor.
