    CARTRIDGE, AIRCRAFT FIRE EXTINGUISHER (M182)

    Type C las s i fi ca t ion :

    Refer to associated aircraft subsystem.

    Use :

To release fire extingu ishing fluid into thearea surrounding an a i rcraf t engine in theevent of a fire.

    D escr ip t ion :

The cartridge consists of a machined brasscasing with a hexagonal midsection and athreaded end enclosing a pair of electrically-fired DuPont E-92 type squibs, placed side byside. The output end of the cartr idge iscrimped over a brass slug,

Each squib is a self-contained unit con-ta ined in a t hin shell of bronze alloy, 0.272-inch

in diameter, and with an integrally-formed con-vex head.

In the assembly one lead wire of eachsquib is brought through a phenolic insulatorand soldered to a common center contact, Theinsulator is sealed in place by crimping the cas-ing over its edge, The other wire of each squibis brought into electrical contact with the car-tridge casing. Joined in parallel to common elec-trical contacts, both squibs fire simultaneously.

Each squib creates sufficient force to rup-ture the frangible disc in the valve body of thecontainer.

The cartridge is seated in the firing headof the valve body fixed to the underside of theextinguishing fluid container, This equipmentis secured within an access pocket in the wingadjacent to the engine area it is to protect.

An insulated plug, attached to the firinghead of the container, connects with the air-craft electric supply and to a firing switch inth e pilots compa rt ment . When the f ir ingswitch is actuated, electric current causes the

squibs to fire, creating gas pressure which pro-pels the slug toward the seal disc, The slugpierces the segmented frangible seal disc in theexit valve body. The fluid (CF 2B r 2 or CF 3Br),which h as been held un der gas pressur e (nitro-gen) in the container, is thereby released, andflows from the f luid container in the wingaccess pocket to the distributing nozzles in theengine area.

G as , deve loped by the ex t ingu i sh ingagent, reduces th e oxygen content in t he enginearea to a point where combustion cannot be sup-ported, thus quenching the fire.

Recommended firing current is 8 amperes.

    CARTRIDGE, AIRCRAFT FIRE EXTINGUISHER: (M193)

    Type Class i f ica t ion :

    Refer to aircraft subsystem.

    U s e :

To release fire extinguishing agent intothe area surrounding an aircraft engine in theevent of a fire.

    NOTE

    To be replaced by MH92.

    D e s c r i p t i o n :

The aircraft fire extinguisher cartridgewhich is electrically initiated, consists of an alu-minum hexagonal midsection with a threadedend, enclosing an electrically fired squib explo-sive. Two threaded electrical connectors, one ofwhich is insulated from the body of the car-

tridge, provides the means for completing theelectrical circuit through a grounded bridge-

wire to the aircraft electrical system.

The aircraft fire extinguisher cartridge isthreaded into the discharge valve body of thefire extinguishing agent container, This equip-ment is secured within an access area aboveand between the engines.

    F u n c t i o n i n g

When the fire control switch is operated, electric current causes the squib to fire, creat-ing gas pressure which separates the spl i tsleeve from the housing. When the split sleeve

separates, pressure from the fire extinguisheragent then is released and flows from the con-tainer to the distributing nozzles in the enginearea.

Gas developed by the extinguishing agentreduces the oxygen content in the engine areato a point where combustion cannot be sup-ported, thus quenching the fire.

To release fire extingu ishing fluid into thearea surrounding an a i rcraf t engine in theevent of a fire in the UH-60 helicopter.

    D escr ip t ion :

The cartr idge consists of a h exheaded alu-minum casing, and a thr eaded end, enclosing apair of electrically-fired Dupont E-92 typesquibs, placed side by side, The output end ofthe cartridge is crimped over a brass slug. Onelead wire of each squib is brought through a phe-nolic insulator and soldered to a common cen-ter contact. The insulator is sealed in place bycrimping the casing over its edge, The otherwire of each squ ib is brought into electrical con-

tact with the cartridge case. Both squibs firesimultaneously.

    F u n c t i o n i n g

An insulated plug, attached to the firinghead of the container, connects with the air-craft electric supply and to a firing switch inth e pilots compa rt men t. When the f ir ingswitch is actuated, electric current causes thesquibs to fire, creating gas pressure which pro-pels the slug toward the seal disc. The slug

pierces the segmented frangible seal disc in theexit valve body. The fluid (CF2Brs or CF3Br),which h as been held under gas pressure (nitro-gen) is released. The fluid flows from thecontainer in the wing access pocket to the dis-tributing nozzles in the engine area.

    3-1. General

A cutter is a cartridge or propellant actu-ated device that is used in aerial delivery sys-tems for cargo, helicopter cargo and rescuehoist cable systems and drone recovery sys-tems. Cutters are classified in accordance withthe following characteristics: (1) Method ofActuat ion - mechanical or e lec t r ica l , (2)Function Time - nondelay or delay.

    3-2. Operat ion

spring and the release of the firing pin areaccomplished with one motion when the firing

pin moves rearward. The sear moves outwardto the cutter body section having an enlargedinternal diameter, which then permits the searto move sideward to release the firing pin. Thefiring pin is propelled forward under the actionof the spring force and strikes the primer, which ignites the delay element, if applicable, then the propellant. Un der t he force of the pro-pe l l an t gas p res su re , t he cu t t e r b l ade i spropelled onto the anvil severing the wires orcable.

    a. Actuation of the mechanical cutter is b. Function of electrically or mechani-accomplished by applying a pull force to thecable or lanyard with sear attached, The lan-

cally initiated cutters is basically the same. The cutters have a specific nondelay or delay

yard sear is engaged in the firing pin; therefore, the pull of the lanyar d applies a load to the fir- time and shall be used only for their designeding pin spring. Compression of the f ir ing pin

A drogue chu te is us ed to pull th e load out ofthe delivery aircraft and to deploy the mainchute, which inflates in a reefed configurationThe deployment of the main chute applies a ten-sile force to the lanyard assembly, which isattached to the firing pin. Compression of thefiring pin spring and release of the firing pinare accomplished with the same motion. Th epotential energy stored in the spring propelsthe firing pin forward, striking the pr imer. Theflash of the primer ignites the 2-second pyro-technic delay mix which, in turn, sets off the pro-

    CUTTE R, ASSEMBLY P /N F TL 3648-2 (MU03)

    Type Class i f ica t ion:

    Refer to aircraft subsystem.

    U s e :

Designed for interim high altitude para-

    chute delivery systems.

    D escr ip t ion :

The cutter conta ins a t hermal bat tery elec-trically initiated cartridge, a mechanical firingpin, steel cutter, and aluminum body.

    F u n c t i o n i n g :

When the ASPSU is dropped from the air-craft, a mechanical firing pin mechanism is actu-

ated by a pull from a st atic line att ached to theaircraft. This action cocks and releases a firingpin, which impa cts the per cussion pr imer of th ethermal battery. The thermal battery fires andproduces 19 volts within 0.500 second and main-tains a voltage between 19 and 35 volts for a

minimum of 120 seconds, with a 28-milli-ampere current drain. This energy is stored incapacitors within t he cutter and altitude sensorm odules un t i l t he p rese l ec t ed a l t i t ude i sreached. At that time the firing circuit is trig-gered, and an electric current pulse of at least7.65 amperes is applied to the cartr idge-actuated cutt er. The cutter t hen fires, severingthe 9,000-pound (40.03kN)-test woven nylonline. The G-12 main parachute is then allowedto open.

    CUTTER, DELAY, PROPELLANT ACTUATED: (MU11)

    Type C las s i f ica t ion :

    Refer to aircraft subsystem.

    U s e :

To sever a nylon reefing line which allowsthe parachute to fully deploy The cutter isins t a l l ed in a m oun t ing b racke t w h ich i sattached to the parachute.

    D e s c r i p t i o n :

The MU11 reefing line cutter is a car-tridge actuated, one shot, disposable mechani-cal unit with the cartridge sealed internally.Major components consist of case, firing pinassembly, lanyard, knife assembly, delay assem-bly and cotter pin.

    F u n c t i o n i n g :

A drogue chu te is used to pull th e load outof the delivery aircraft and to deploy the mainchute, which inflates in a reefed configuration. The deployment of the main chute applies a ten-sile force to the lanyard assembly which isattached to the firing pin. Compression of thefiring pin spring and release of the firing pinare accomplished with the same motion. Thepotential energy stored in the spring propels

the firing pin forward, st riking the pr imer. Theflash of th e primer ignites th e four-second pyro-technic delay mix which, in turn, sets off the pro-pellant charge behind the cutter blade assembly.

Under th e force of the propellant gas pres-sure, the cutter blade separates from the knife-delay assembly and is pr opelled forward in th ebore of the housing. The impact of the blade onthe an vil severs t he n ylon reefing line insert edin the cutter, allowing full deployment of themain parachute.

When the cargo is jettisoned from the air-craft, par achute deployment a ctivates t he firingmechanism. This compresses a spring behindthe firing pin. The stored energy of the com-pressed spring drives the firing pin into theM42 percussion primer of the M252 cartridge.

Primer initiation ignites an A1A composi-t i on ign i t e r cha rge ad jacen t t o t he de l aycolumn. Upon the elapse of approximately 20seconds , the delay mix ignites th e filler a nd out -put charge; the resulting gases rotate the spin-ner on the release mechanism which releasesthe ground disconnect p in a t tached to thecatch. Upon ground contact (no load on therelease), the rotated spinner allows the latchholding the cargo to release. Thus, the para-chute is prevented from dragging or causingthe cargo to tumble along the ground.
