It was a moment in which I felt really alive.” –Dayna Tapp • “Snorkeling during Spring Break while studying abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico.” –Adriana Daoust • “Getting my first strike with good friends.” –Jennifer Worcester • “My favorite memory, besides the numerous times hanging out with friends, would have to be Wildstock 2011. Either that or convincing Jordan Jacobo and Tim Wagar to go to Poland with me to see a painting that ended up actually being in Hungary. Term class to study the economics of D-Day.” –Hank Iba • “Broadcasting all the best D-III sports teams west of the Mississippi.” –Kurtis Williams • “Linfield gave me the fantastic opportunity to travel to the Galapagos Island in Ecuador. Spending hours on the top of the boat as we traveled between the islands, watching the sun rise and set and seeing all the spectacular wildlife is an experience I will treasure all my life.” –Carolyn Blood • “My favorite memory is singing ‘Blister in the Sun’ while stoking a kiln at Nils Lou’s East Anagama. I worked the midnight to 6 a.m. shift with a lot of kids from Storey Street, and it was truly a memory that I would not have gotten anywhere but from Linfield.” –Kelley Hungerford • “ere are many good memories that I could mention here (too many!), but one of my favorite memories from this year was the Caleb and Sol concert, which I was very privileged to organize. My dad and stepmom drove down for it, and it was really neat to combine two of my worlds in a way — home and college life. A lot of my friends were there as well, and I’m so thankful to God and all the people that helped organize it and to Caleb and Sol and their band for how well the concert went.” –Sierra Stopper • “Playing Wildstock 2011 with Prowler.” –Garrett Garceau • “One of my favorite Linfield memories is moving in freshman year and getting to know the girls on my floor. Afterlosing4-0totheUni-versityofTexasatTylerPatri-otsonMay21,the’Catshadto battle their way throughtheeliminationbracket,win-

ningthreeloser-outgamestofaceChristopherNewportintwochampionshipgames.

“We played nervousagainst Texas-Tyler,” headcoachJacksonVaughansaid,“butwestillfeltlikewewerethebestteamthere.Itwouldbe tough,but therewasstillachance.”

The ’Cats would getanother chance at Texas-Tyler, but not before takingdown Eastern ConnecticutStateUniversity9-1onMay22 and the State UniversityofNewYorkCollegeatCort-

land12-1onMay23.In the second of three

gamesthe’CatsplayedMay23, they avenged their lossto Texas-Tyler, beating thePatriots7-1.

The third game was thefirst of the two games thatdecided the national cham-pion. Senior pitcher ClaireVelaski and junior pitcherLaurenHarveyeachgaveupjusttwohitsinthe6-0shut-outofChristopherNewport.Sophomore third basemanKarleigh Prestianni blasteda home run and contrib-

uted three RBI to boost theoffense.

The ’Cats faced off onelasttimeagainstChristopherNewportonMay24.

The’Catsgotontheboardfirst when they scored onerunintheopeningframe,butafter five andahalf inningsof play the score was tiedat two, and the game wasdelayedbecauseoflightning.

Whenplayresumed,Pres-tianni opened what wouldbe a four-run inning for the’Catswith a solohome run.Harvey held the Captains

scorelessinthebottomoftheseventh inningtosecure the6-2winandnationaltitle.

“[The feeling] is unreal;thereisnothinglikeit.Afterthatlastoutitwasjustarushof adrenaline and eupho-ria,”junioroutfielderJaydeeBaxtersaid.

“This was our goal fromtheveryfirsttimewemetthisyear,sotogoandberankednumber one and have thatpressureallyearandthentowinitisamazing,”Vaughansaid.

The ’Cats finished the

season with a 51-3 recordandsixplayerswerenamedto the all-tournament teamincluding Velaski, Harvey,Prestianni, Baxter, seniorshortstop Emily Keagbine,junior catcher Emilee Leppand junior first basemanStaciDoucette.

“I guess it hasn’t reallysunk in yet,”Doucette said.“Ithinkwe’reallstillalittleshocked but it’s definitelyexciting and it was a coolexperience.”

Four seniorswill carry onLinfield’s tradition of gather-ing during the night to painttheseniorbenchbeforeSpringCommencement.

Seniors Adriana Daoust,Jennifer Worcester, ArmindaGandara and Kaycee Hall-stromvolunteeredtorepresentthe Class of ’11 by decorat-ing the bench,Hallstrom, thegroup’scommitteechair,said.

“We know that we wantit to be something differentfromotheryearsand thatwewillincludetheschoolcolors,”Hallstromsaid.

Hallstrom said that allseniors received an emailinvitingthemtohelppaintthebench.

Director of CollegeActivi-ties Dan Fergueson said

paintingthebenchhasbeenaschooltraditionlongbeforehestartedworkingatLinfield12yearsago.Hesaiditrepresentsdifferent themes and memo-riesthatareimportanttoeachclass.

“It gives the folks in thesenior class an easy way toleavetheirmark,”hesaid.

Fergueson said the Classof ’02 dedicated the benchto the tragic events of 9/11,while other classes paintedlight-hearted themes, such asDr.Seussquotesorsignaturesfrom graduates. He also saidthat it’s typical for seniors topaint the bench late at nightbeforeCommencement.

“They stay true to formby putting it off until thelast minute,” he said. “It’sone last chance for themto procrastinate on a proj-ect before they graduate.”

Fergueson said he recalled aparticular year in which thisprocrastination led to somehumorousdifficulties.

“About four or five yearsago, they painted the benchthe night before Commence-ment,anditdidn’tdryintimefor theceremony,”he said.“I

was helping with rounds intheweehoursofthemorning,and I remember seeing theircars circledaround thebenchwith the headlights shiningitonsothattheycouldseetopaint.”

sity9-6thenextday.While the game against

Chapman did not turn outin a win for the Wildcats,baseballteamputupafight.ThescorebouncedbackandforthbetweenChapmanandLinfield as they fought forthelead.

It wasn’t until the ninthinning when Chapmanpulled ahead by a singlerun,whichsenttheWildcatshome.

When asked about his

most memorable momentwhile at regionals, seniorcatcher Cole Bixenmanreflectedon the tournamentandhisteammates.

“Probably my boy Gun-narCederberghittingahugetwo run homer in our winagainst Trinity. That was abigmomentumplayforus,”hesaid.

While the Linfield ex-perience has ended for theteam’s seniors, Bixenmansaidthatbeingapartof the

teamhasbeengreat,andtheexperiencewill not soon beforgotten.

“It’s been great to be apartof suchawinningpro-gram for four years,” hesaid.“Togothroughthetri-alsandtribulationsofabase-ball season is crazy, and toseehoweachandeveryyearthedifferentgroupsofguyspulled together as one willstickwithmeforever.”
