GETTING STARTED

CREATING YOUR

PRESENTATION

To launch PowerPoint: On a PC, double-click on the "Power Point" icon located on your desktop. On a Mac, click on the Apple menu icon on the upper left corner of the screen. Then go to "Software" and select "Microsoft PowerPoint". Once PowerPoint has been launched, choose which type of presentation that you would like to use using the “New Slide” button on top right:

Visual 1

Choose a "Blank Presentation" to start your own design from scratch.

Choose a "Design Template" for a more structured layout with freedom to customize it 1. Choose the first slide for your presentation. You can have any slide as your first slide, but the most common one used for the first slide is the "Title Slide".

**If you did not choose a blank presentation, then you do not have to worry about this step. 2. To type in a title on the slide, click on "Click to Add Title", and then type in your title. 3. When you are done typing in the text on your first slide, you will want to create more slides. This is done by going to the "Home" tab and selecting "New Slide". You can once again choose the layout of the new slide. (See Visual 2).

BACKGROUND

DESIGN & EFFECTS

GRAPHICS,

MOVIES & SOUND

A white background does not really catch audience’s attention. Thus, we need to change our background to something more interesting. Powerpoint 2007 offers numerous choices of background designs and styles. To add a design to slides, click on the “Design” tab. (See to visual 5) Once there, you can choose which design you prefer. If you wish, you can let your cursor hover over one of the options until you’re shown a preview of the background on the main slide.

Adding graphics such as images helps create a greater interest to your presentation than having one with plain text. To add graphics:

1. Click on the "Insert" tab and choose from the menu (See Visual 3). Here you can choose to use the Clip Art catalog on the computer (which has stored pictures), a picture saved on your disk, a picture uploaded from a digital camera or scanner, Auto Shapes (which are random shapes), an Organizational Chart, Symbols, Object, or Word Art. You can even put movies and sound in your presentation!

Visual 4

2. When you have selected your graphic, it will be inserted into the slide. It may not be in the exact position that you want it to be in, so you may have to move it. To move your graphic, click on it and drag the graphic to the desired position.

3. To change the size of the graphic, click and hold on one of the small white bubbles that surrounds the picture box and drag it in or out to adjust the size (See Visual 4).

**To keep the proportions of the picture the same, you can hold down the "Shift" key while clicking and dragging on one of the four boxes on the corners of the graphic.

SLIDE

ANIMATIONS &

SOUNDS

Visual 5

Another great feature that you may want to add to your slide presentation is animation or sound. To add animations and/or sounds, do the following:

I. First choose the desired slide you wish to add the animation or sound to. Once you have done so, go to the "Animation" tab.

2. There is a full list of animations to be applied at the selected slides including sound and speed transition too. See visual 6 below.

Visual 6

3. You can also customize your own transition by using the ‘custom animation’ button located on to the left of the animation thumbprints.

- In this particular menu, user can choose to work on each element of each slide. This means that a user can animate each element using different kinds of animation with a click of a button.

CHANGING TEXT

COLOR

BULLETS &

NUMBERS

1. To change the color of your text on any slide, highlight the text that you'd like to change. (You may also change the color before you type in your text.).

2. You can change the attributes of your text by clicking on the “Home” tab and selecting the “font” menu (see visual 7). You can change the font, style, size, color and other new options.

Visual 7

It's a good idea to have a list or outline explaining what the presentation will cover. Displaying this information at the beginning of your PowerPoint presentation can help keep the listeners' thoughts organized, as well as your own. Showing this same list of information at the end of the presentation is also a great review for your audience. Bullets and Numbers can help you do this. 1. First click on the slide and location where you would like to add bullets or numbers. 2. Then go to the “Home” tab, then “paragraph” menu. At this point you may choose the kind of the bullet or number that you want. (see Visual 8).

VIEWING YOUR

PRESENTATION

Before you decide your PowerPoint slide show is complete, you should watch the entire presentation to make sure everything is correct and looks how you want it. To watch the actual slide show: 1. Go to the "View" tab and choose "Slide Show." (or you can also press F5 button)

a) Go through it and take note of what you would like to change. b) It is possible that you will have to change the content. But, you may just dislike the image

or the flow of the presentation. In this case, look at adjusting the ...

CHANGING SLIDE

ORDER

Another helpful tool is to look at all your slides at once. While doing this, you can also change the order of your slides if you like: 1. Choose the "View" tab and go to "Slide Sorter.”

Here you can see a smaller, detailed version of every slide at once.

To move a slide to a different position, click on the slide you wish to move and drag it to the new spot (between 2 other slides) where you would like it to appear. A line will appear at the slide's new destination and you can let go of the mouse button.

2. Another easy way to change the order of your PowerPoint presentation is in the Normal view, which is under "View" tab, then "Normal.” Here you can use the side panel which shows the slide numbers and text.

Click and grab a slide (next to one of the numbers). The different viewing options are also available on the lower, right comer of the screen. If you wish, you can click on the icon for Slide Sorter (see Visual 10) and Normal (see Visual 11) to go to the default viewing.

SAVING

PRESENTATION

Once your presentation is complete, don't forget to save it! * It's even a good idea to save your presentation several times while you are creating it, just to be safe. * 1. Look everything over to make sure it's correct. Use the spell check, under the "Review" tab. 2. Go to the "File" menu (The Window Logo on top left). Then chose "Save" or "Save As". 3. It will ask you where to save the file and what you would like to name it. Come up with a name for your presentation and type it in. Your PowerPoint slide show is finally complete!
