Research Guide
Consider revising each of the points in this checklist, as they will help you have a better research on your topic and on your country, as well as finding better information the easiest way possible.
WHAT TO INVESTIGATE Enter www.tjmungdl.com , there you’ll find all the information you will need:
• Who is in charge? The members of the Secretariat: o Secretary General o Under-‐Secretary o Chair Person o Moderator.
• The Delegate handbook • Your committee:
o Study Guides on each of your topics. • Schedule of the conference. • Useful Links for your research.

Get to understand your topic. The Study Guides will give you a general idea of the issue, however, you’ll need to make a further investigation. Make sure you can answer ALL of the following questions:
• Background of the topic. o What has happened? o When did it happen/start? o Why is it happening? o Who is involved? (Countries, public figures, organizations, etc) o Where is it happening?
• Past Actions o What has been done by the UN? o What countries are involved in the solving of the problem?
Understand the position of YOUR COUNTRY. • Background Information
o How is the problem affecting your country? o What is the perspective of your country on the topic?
• Past Actions o What has your country done to solve the problem? o Are there any Non Governmental Organizations in your country that help solve
the issue? o Has your country applied Laws to solve the issue?
• Allies and Other Countries o Who are the allies of your nation? o What agreements has your country done with other nations? With which?
• Basic Facts you should know o Economic status of your country o Type of Government o International Relations o Location of your country (Who are your neighbors? Most of the times,
problems come from nations near yours. Ex: Immigration) o Governmental & non-‐governmental organizations.
Be sure to have a clear understanding of your country’s position on each of the topics. If your delegation isn’t directly involved in the issue or hasn’t established a concrete position you may deduce how your nation would be most likely to act, based on the research you’ve made.

HOW TO RESEARCH Researching is easy! But it takes time, since you’ll need to have a complete knowledge of the topic, as well as your country. Check out some tips that will help you get good and ample information easier.
A finder can always be useful for you to find good information. • www.Google.com • www.Yahoo.com
(Remember, you should NOT write the whole title of your topic in the search bar, only write KEY WORDS)
v Here is an example of Research:
What is your topic? What’s your country?
Example: “The Promotion of gender equality in Governance and Leadership.” Our example country will be: Spain
 Start your Research.
You can start in finders or directly in the links that the TJMUN staff has given you. This
time, we will start in a finder; the most common and easy one: Google! • Key words for this topic can be:
o Gender Equality in Spain o Women Governance in Spain o Promotion of Women as leaders o Women’s Rights in Spain
• Afterwards, chose one of the websites; in this case we’ll use, the one from
www.wikigender.org, remember it is preferable to chose reliable sources like: o www.un.org o www.cia.gov o www.cnn.com o www.bbc.com
As well as many others that can be very useful to do your research and to get reliable information.

You enter the source you decided to look in and READ carefully the information and UNDERSTAND what is written.
• If you already read the document and you think it is important information that
relates to the topic, you should print it, re-‐read it and highlight the most important points.
• You may find information about the topic that is not about your country, read it as well and understand it because then you’ll have a better idea of what other countries can and cannot do.
After these steps, you may repeat them with other websites. Don’t stop when you think you’ve got enough information; the more, the better.
• Remember to try with different KEY WORDS; depending on the key words you use, is the result you’ll have and those different results will lead you to understand your topic little by little.
• If you know what your topics are about and know the position of your country, your position paper will be easier to write.
Don’t limit your research! MORE IS BETTER! Just make sure you READ and UNDERSTAND everything you find. Organize your information in a binder, use highlighters, etc.
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!
