THE BROWN BULLETIN Published By And For The Employees Of Brown Company Volume BERLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, SEPTEMBER 6, 1949 Number 16 All-Day Program Marks Labor Day Celebration Here International Union President Speaks What was probably the big- gest Labor Day celebration in the history of the local union was planned for last Monday by members of Local 75, Inter- national Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Work- ers, A. F. of L. Union Head Speaks A 26-man committee, with representatives from all the mills, arranged a program to include entertainment for all members of the family. Highlight of the program came during the evening. Scheduled as speaker was the president of the international union, John P. Burke. Other big events of the evening were eight acts of top-quality vaudeville, a band concert and the awarding of prizes. The day's program opened with the traditional solemn high mass, celebrated at St. Anne's Church. Beginning at 10 o'clock, the program listed a wide variety of sports for both young and old. Included were such fun- provoking events as a wheel- uarruw race, a ultuufold raUeT a fat man's race, a girls' base- ball accuracy throw, a junior baseball game, money scram- bles for both boys and girls and the traditional tug-of- war, with Burgess Mill pulling against a team from Cascade Mill and the Upper Plants. A band concert was sched- uled to open the afternoon's program, followed by another in the red hot series of base- ball games between the Berlin Red Sox and the Gorham Townies. These are the committee members who planned the celebration: General Committee Philip Smyth, president of the local union; Armand Le- gere, vice president; William Brideau, financial secretary; George Gauvin of the Power and Steam Division; Norman Tondreau of Cascade Mill, (Continued on Page 4) Here's New Law To Remember There's a new law on the books which every motorist should keep in mind. It regards overtaking and passing school buses. Under this new law, the driver of a motor vehicle must stop when meeting or overtaking any school bus displaying flashing red lights which has stopped on the highway to receive or discharge school children. The driver must not pro- ceed until such school bus starts up, or until the red lights stop flashing, or until signalled by the bus driver to proceed. The law pertains to driv- ers approaching from either direction. Group Insurance Is 30 Years Old Company Cited As Pioneer In Field Brown Company is well known as a pioneer in the pulp and paper field. Many of its developments and products were "firsts" in the industry. Pioneering" Employees Invest $95,000 During Savings Bond Drive COMPLETE LONG SERVICE But recently, the 30th anni- versary of another type of "pioneering" was marked. Thirty years ago the com- pany made arrangements for its first group insurance pro- gram. In a letter to President F. G. Coburn, J. M. Campbell, a vice president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, de- clared that when the company first arranged a group insur- ance program "there was a comparatively small number of such contracts in existence, so that your company can in a sense be considered a pion- eer in this field. "Today the insurance com- panies are underwriting em- ployee programs for over 50,- 000 employers in this country. You will be interested to know that over 39 billions of dollars of group life insurance exists (Continued on Page 3) These two veterans of 55 years service with the company recently retired. The accident rate still was climbing slowly as the ninth period ended. Up 10% From Year Ago A report from the Safety Division showed that the fre- quency rate was slightly more than 2% higher at the end of the ninth period than it was at the end of the eighth. Com- pared with a year ago it also was up—and by a considerable amount, almost 10%. Six people were hurt badly enough during the ninth peri- od to keep them out of work. That meant that those six people lost time and money and the company lost their services. The total number of lost- time accidents was three be- low what it was for the ninth period a year ago. But it must be remembered that there were quite a few less man hours worked this year. This meant that more people were getting hurt during the same amount of time. (Continued on Page 4) Among Brown Company men retiring recently are two who came to work for the company 55 years ago. They are Carl Hanson, gate- man at the Grand Trunk Gate, and George Murdock, an op- erator at the Riverside Power Extension, both of whom started work with the com- pany in 1893. Worked In Saw Mill Mr. Hanson first worked as a slab cutter in the old saw mill. Later he was engaged in "taking lumber away from the saw" and as setter, in which he set up lumber. He worked at this latter job for 24 years. He has been with the Watch- men's Department since the closing of the saw mill in 1929. Mr. Murdock has been work- ing at the Riverside Extension since 1921. Two of the men retiring have been with the company for 45 years or more. They are Mark Wight, who began work in 1903, and Thomas McCar- thy, who first worked with the company in 1904. A number of the group re- tired after 40 or more years of service. They include (with the date when they started work): Cleburne Locke (1906), John McKinley, Sr. (1906), James Monahan (1906), Henry Pin- ette (1906), Mike Stranger (1907), Urbain Caron (1907, Frank Frabizio (1907), Arthur Bolduc (1907), Edward Hall (1907), Arsene Cote (1908), Nicodemo GaUuzzo (1909), Jo- seph Valliere (1909). Other men retiring include: Valentino Addario (1910), Eugene Jolin (1912), Vincent Poretta (1912), Polycarpe Beaupre (1913), Walter Ken- ney (1915). Joseph Tremblay (1916), Thomas McGinnis (1916), Charles Cox (1916), David Bourbeau (1917), Camille Dal- phonse (1917), Frank Heath (1917), William Hall (1917). Of County Quota Total Invested In Payroll Savings Brown Company employees have shown they still can set the pace when it comes to in- vesting their money in U.S. Savings Bonds. "Job Well Done" Figures released by Loren A. Littlefield, state director of the Treasury Department's Sav- ings Bonds Division, showed this; 1. Brown Company employ- ees invested more than $95,000 in bonds during the recent Op- portunity Drive. 2. Brown Company people accounted for almost 50 per cent of the investment in bonds in the entire county. Mr. Littlefield declared that employees "should derive a great deal of pride and satis- faction from a job well done." Doing a job well in savins through bonds is an old story with Brown Company people. Their record throughout the war was one of the best in the U. S. And since the war, they have been saving thousands of dollars a year. Sends County Over Top Thanks to Brown Company people, Coos County went over the top in the drive. Officials set $218,000 as the Coos quota. Actual cash investment in bonds during the drive was $226,687.50. Of this total, Brown Company people invest- ed $95,658.39. There are some other inter- esting figures in the report. Brown Company people in- vested more during the drive than did all of the people of Belknap and Carroll Counties combined. They invested al- most $20,000 more than all the people in Sullivan County. (Continued on Page 3) Jack Eads Sets Fires But Only For Good Cause Jack Eads, who is plant pro- tection foreman, reversed his role the other day. Not Fire Bug Included in Jack's job nor- mally is the prevention and extinguishing of fires. But that day Jack was setting fires—on purpose. Jack's fires couldn't gain much headway, because just as soon as they began to burn well, they were put out. The purpose of Jack's fire- setting was to demonstrate the effective work of dry chemical fire extinguishers. The demonstration was held in the west yard of Burgess Mill, where about 30 members of the Burgess fire brigade and other interested people were on hand for another in a series of periodical demon- strations. On hand with extinguishers were Philip M. Marvel of the General Equipment Corpora- tion of Boston and Don Kidder of Blanchard Associates, Inc., Turner, Maine, dealers for An- sul extinguishers. Here's New LawTo Remember

There's a new law on thebooks which every motoristshould keep in mind.

It regards overtaking andpassing school buses.

Under this new law, thedriver of a motor vehiclemust stop when meetingor overtaking any schoolbus displaying flashing redlights which has stopped onthe highway to receive ordischarge school children.

The driver must not pro-ceed until such school busstarts up, or until the redlights stop flashing, or untilsignalled by the bus driverto proceed.

The law pertains to driv-ers approaching from eitherdirection.

How 'Work* Became 'Employment9

In a society in which every man produced only for his ownuse and that of his dependents, there could be no enforced idle-ness which is now loosely called "'unemployment.''

Under these conditions his economic life was what he madeit: His own material welfare and that of his dependents wasdetermined by the quantity and quality of his energy and histools.

His own needs and those of his dependents controlled andguided his work.

If he was idle, it was either because he wanted nothing orbecause he chose to go without that which he wanted ratherthan expend energy to get it.

But as society developed and families lived in communities,men started to devote their energy to the work they did bestand to exchange their products with workers producing othergoods and services.

Thus, a man with a talent for making shoes did nothing butmake shoes.

He did not have to spend time making other things becausehe could exchange part of what he made for the other thingshe needed.

Thus, man gradually stopped producing only for himself andhis dependents and began to exchange his work with otherworkers.

Under these conditions it was other men's wants that con-trolled and guided his work.

He was no longer his only "customer."Unless other men were willing and able to "employ" (make

use of) his labor, he could not be "employed."

Lost To WoodsRiverside's only loss was in

its second game of the round,when it dropped a 20-to-12 de-cision to the Woods Depart-ment.

However, the race was tightright up to the last week. Oncowas rolh'ng along with only asingle defeat until it met Cas-cade in its last game.

It was nip and tuck all theway. Cascade took a third-inning 4-3 lead, and thenpicked up another run in thefourth. Both clubs scored inthe sixth.

In the top of the seventh,Bilodeau opened with a doublefor Onco. After two were out,Girard sent him home witha single. But Pitcher ErnieFournier made Saucier groundback to the mound to cut therally short and give Cascade a6-to-5 victory.

Bermico ForfeitsRiverside's final victory was

a 9-to-O forfeit from Bermico,when Bermico had only five ofits players appear. Under therules adopted by the teamrepresentatives at the start ofthe season, a team needed sixmen on the field.

One of the surprises of theround was the showing of theMain Office. Unable to win agame in the first round, theOffice picked up three victor-ies in the second round. Theyreally broke loose in the finalgame of the year against Bur-gess, pounding out a 14-to-9victory.

The old Brown Company store looked as in the photo at the left when Carl Hanson and George Murdock first cameto work with the company. Today, at their retirement, the spot looks as it does in the photo at the right. Take particu-lar notice of the tree in the foreground of both pictures. Fifty-five years ago it was but a struggling sappling. Todayit is tall and majestic. Note also the comparison of vehicles in the two photographs. There are two eras of transporta-tion— one, the age of the horse; the other, the age of the automobile.

We understand Leo Ther-rien's boy was named the "pin-up" boy at the St. Louis Hos-pital. Out of six babies, hewas the only boy.

Bill Raymond and familymotored 'round the coast ofMaine, and enjoyed the drive-in movies at different points,among other things. Mrs. Ray-mond was handicapped by abroken bone in her foot, butshe showed her good sports-manship during the trip.

What Were Accidents?Most serious accident result-

ed in a broken arm. The pa-tient reported it occurredwhen his arm jammed be-tween a mill truck and a rail-road car.

Another accident came whenan employee slipped and in-jured his right foot. One em-ployee crushed a finger, whenhis hand was jammed betweentwo skids. Another injuredtwo fingers when his handwas caught between a droppedshaft and a drum.

A board caught under achain and struck an employeeon the back of the head, caus-ing him to fall about 10 feet.This, the report said, causedlacerations and contusionsabout the face.

A girl employee received astrain which, she said, wascaused from handling pack-ages.

Together, the estimated timelost by these accidents is al-most 100 days. That is equalto every employee in the millslosing almost 20 minutes work.

But, as always, there weresome bright sides to the pic-ture. Those were RiversideMill, Burgess Mill, the BerlinRailway and the Onco Plant.All showed improvements sincethe end of 1948.

Sales Department In Review SafetyStandingsHarold S. Chellis was born

in Portland, Maine, and edu-cated in the local schools. Heis a graduate of Deering HighSchool.

His career with Brown Com-pany began in June 1918 as astenographer in the Pulp SalesDivision. The company at thattime had its main offices at404 Commercial Street, Port-land. Two years later, Mr.Chellis became a shippingclerk.

He was appointed assistantto E. F. Moody, manager ofthe Pulp Sales Division, in1926. In 1933, he became NewEngland representative for thePulp Sales Division, a positionhe has held since.

Mr. and Mrs. Chellis havetwo children. Their daughter,Jo Anne, was graduated fromthe University of Maine in1948. Tommy, their son, is a

Snowshoed To Job,On Duty 72 Hours

The retirement of threemen at the Cascade SteamPlant brought to mind astory that should cool youoff.

During the big blizzard ofMarch 1920, George Hooper,Henry Tremaine and JosephStephenson snowshoed towork from Gorham. Theyfollowed the Grand Trunktracks.

All highways were blockedand the Berlin street carwas buried in snow in Gor-ham's Upper Village.

The men reported forwork on time — and re-mained on duty 72 hoursuntil the storm subsided.

Word was received recentlyfrom a former employee oithe Bermico Division, GeorgeBruni. George has been grant-ed a fellowship at VirginiaPolytechnic Institute for re-search work on the treatmentof pulprrill waste for the Na-tional Council of Stream Im-provement. He is working forhis doctorate in Chemical En-gineering.

The Berlin Mills Railwaywas not far behind. Only orthe first published list did therailway have a department"behind the eightball."

The Riverside Mill, the Re-search Department and theMaintenance and ConstructiorDepartment have had onljtwo marks against them.

As has been pointed outthere are many reasons be-hind the Good Housekeepingprogram.

One of the big reasons is fireprotection. Another is safetyAnd good housekeeping make*work easier, for materials anctools are where you want thenwhen you want them.

Good housekeeping also af-fects quality of products, foia clean mill makes for cleane]products.

Last but not least, it is monpleasant to work in a depart-ment that is clean.
