Work Package Task1. LAN/fabric networking.
– Evaluation of networking issues related to the fabric architectures under analysis in WP2.
2. FTP
– Study of standardization status of the ftp protocol at IETF;
– Experimental evaluation of prototypes of the grid ftp, i.e. of different implementations of the extended ftp protocol under definition at the Grid Forum: e.g. gsiftp (Globus), NCftp (NASA) and Washington University ftp;
– Contribution to the definition of the extensions of the ftp protocol in collaboration with the Grid Forum; evaluation of the possibility to extend the protocol definition for the support of file transfer in a multicast scenarios through reliable multicast.

– Study of state of the art of reliable multicast for the evaluation of the maturity of this architecture currently under study at IRTF;
– Evaluation of the applicability of reliable multicast to replica management (sub-task to be developed in collaboration with WP2 of Data Grid) and for information exchange GRIS GIIS
– Experimentation of reliable multicast-based ftp prototypes; – Study of applicability of multicast extensions to ftp in the
framework of the Grid Forum. 4. IBP
– Evaluation of networking issues related to the IBP protocol;– Evaluation of IBP data server distribution in the wide area.

5. Client-server connection methodologies
– Network = operazione di I/O all'interno di un sistema operativo (MPI, database distribuiti, DFS, AFS.....); estensibilita’ del sistema operativo alla rete;
– Network = interconnessione di server e client (server FTPS, WEB,...); modelli client/server, interfacce e protocolli.
6. Traffic Monitoring
• at network and application level - to be applied to Testbed 0 and following releases;
• adaptation/refinement of an existing monitoring tools
