Activity Planner Messages(APM:nnnnnnX)

This chapter lists all the messages issued by the Activity Planner feature in numerical order.

Message FormatActivity Planner messages have the following format:APM:nnnnnnX

where the parts of the message are as follows:

APM: The Activity Planner message identifier

nnnnnnA unique numeric identifier

X The severity code indicator:

I Informational: Informational messages provide users with information orfeedback about normal events that have occurred or are occurring, or requestinformation from users in cases where the outcome will not be negative, regardless of the response.

Examples:¶ ″The status request is processing.″¶ ″The files were successfully transferred.″¶ ″Do you want to save your output in file a or in file b?″

W Warning: Warning messages indicate that potentially undesirable conditionshave occurred or could occur, but the program can continue. Warningmessages often ask users to make decisions before processing continues.

Examples:¶ ″A requested resource is missing. Processing will continue.″¶ ″A file already exists with the same name. Do you want to overwrite

this file?″

E Error: Error messages indicate problems that require intervention orcorrection before the program can continue.

Examples:¶ ″The specified file could not be found.″¶ ″You are out of space on the x drive. The file cannot be saved to this

The policy region contains resource types and the list of resources tobe managed. A policy region is represented on the Tivoli desktop by an icon that resembles a capitol building(dome icon). When a Tivoli management region (region) is created, a policy region with the same name is alsocreated. In this case, the region has only one policy region. A region addresses thephysical connectivity of resources whereas a policy region addresses the logical organization of resources.

policy subregionIn a Tivoli environment, a policy region created or residing in another policy region. When a policy subregion iscreated, it initially uses the resource and policy properties of the parent policy region. The Tivoli administratorcan later change or customize these properties to reflect the specific needs and differences of the subregion.

The Tivoli EnterpriseConsole product provides a centralized, global view of the network computing environment; it uses distributedevent monitors to collect information, a central event server to process information, and distributed eventconsoles to present information to system administrators.

Tivoli Enterprise softwareThe integrated suite of Tivoli products for systems management in a large organization. These products enablesystem administrators to manage their network computing enterprise according to the disciplines of availabilitymanagement, deployment management, operations and administration, security management, and service-levelmanagement. This suite includes Tivoli Business System Manager, Tivoli NetView for OS/390, and TivoliDecision Support.

Tivoli environmentThe Tivoli applications, based upon the Tivoli Management Framework, that are installed at a specific customerlocation and that address network computing management issues across many platforms. In a Tivoli environment,a system administrator can distribute software, manage user configurations, change access privileges, automateoperations, monitor resources, and schedule jobs.

Tivoli install imageIn a Tivoli environment, a file that resides on a CD or in a file system and contains a Tivoli product to beinstalled. A Tivoli install image can be used to install the Tivoli Management Framework or to install anapplication onto the Framework for the first time. A single CD often includes both a Tivoli install image and aTivoli upgrade image, and it may include Tivoli install images for more than one application. Contrast withTivoli upgrade image.

Tivoli InventoryA Tivoli product that enables system administrators to gather hardware and software information for a networkcomputing environment. It scans the managed resources and stores inventory information in the configurationrepository.

Tivoli management agentIn a Tivoli environment, an agent that securely performs administrative operations.

Tivoli Management FrameworkThe Tivoli base software that is required to run the applications in the Tivoli product suite. This softwareinfrastructure enables the integration of systems management applications from Tivoli Systems Inc. and the TivoliPartners. The Tivoli Management Framework includes the following: object request broker (oserv), distributedobject database, basic administration functions, basic application services, and basic desktop services (such as thegraphical user interface). In a Tivoli environment, the Tivoli Management Framework is installed on every clientand server; however, the Tivoli management region server is the only server that holds the full object database.

Tivoli management gatewayIn a Tivoli environment, a system that enables bidirectional communication with Tivoli management agents.

Tivoli management region (region)In a Tivoli environment, a Tivoli server and the set of clients that it serves. An organization can have more thanone region. A region addresses the physical connectivity of resources whereas a policy region addresses thelogical organization of resources.

Tivoli management region clientIn a Tivoli environment, any computer—except the Tivoli management region server (Tivoli server)—on whichthe Tivoli Management Framework is installed. The oserv daemon runs on the Tivoli management region(region) client, and the region client maintains a local object database. See Tivoli client and Tivoli server.

Tivoli management region roleIn a Tivoli environment, the role an administrator has in the local Tivoli management region (region) and anyconnected region. The region role propagates the assigned authorization level to all resources in the region. Forexample, if a Tivoli administrator has a senior role in a region, then the administrator has the senior role overevery resource in that region.

Tivoli management region server (Tivoli server)A Tivoli server for a specific Tivoli management region (region). See Tivoli client and Tivoli management regionclient.

Tivoli management softwareThe overall descriptor for software from Tivoli Systems Inc., which includes Tivoli Enterprise software (forsystems management in a large organization), Tivoli IT Director (for systems management in a small or mediumorganization), and Tivoli Cross-Site™ (for the management of e-commerce systems).
