A SYNOPSIS - SPOILER ALERT! -

WAR & SACRIFICE: The play begins with the death of the emperor of Rome, just as Titus Andronicus, Rome’s great warrior, arrives home from a successful battle against the Goths. Titus brings with him as prisoners Tamora, Queen of the Goths, and her three sons. Deaf to Tamora’s entreaties for mercy, he slays the eldest of her sons as a sacrifice. Tamora vows revenge on Titus and his sons.

THRONE & WEDDING: The emperor’s two sons are vying for the throne, but the popular vote offers it to Titus. Titus refuses the honor, instead supporting Saturninus, the late emperor’s elder son. Saturninus becomes emperor and immediately snatches Titus’ daughter, Lavinia, from her fiancé, his brother Bassianus. When Saturninus sees Tamora, however, he gives up Lavinia and marries Tamora instead.

RAPE: Tamora’s sons, Chiron and Demetrius, lust after Lavinia. Tamora’s secret lover, Aaron the Moor, convinces the two boys to take her by force. During a hunt, Lavinia and Bassianus are caught by Chiron and Demetrius, who stab Bassianus and throw him into a pit. They drag Lavinia off to rape her. They remove her tongue and hands so that she can’t name her attackers.

A PIT WITH TWO SONS: Aaron lures Titus’ sons Martius and Quintus who fall into the pit and Aaron leaves in order to frame them for the murder of Bassianus. Saturninus blames Titus’ sons for Bassianus’ death and takes them prisoner.

A HAND AND TWO HEADS: Titus’ brother, Marcus, finds the mutilated Lavinia in the woods and takes her to Titus. Meanwhile, Aaron brings word that if Titus will send Saturninus his severed hand, the emperor will send back Titus’ two imprisoned sons. Titus sacrifices his hand, but Saturninus refuses it and returns Titus’ hand along with the severed heads of Martius and Quintus.

REVENGE & A REVELATION: Vowing revenge, Titus sends Lucius his only remaining son to the Goths to raise an army to attack Rome. Soon after, Lavinia finds a way to name “Chiron” and “Demetrius” as her rapists.

THE BABY: Tamora has a child, but it is black, making it clear that he is the son of Aaron, not Saturninus. Tamora orders the baby to be killed, but Aaron, vowing to keep the child, kills the nurse, and takes the baby toward the Goth camp for safety.

RUSE: Titus, pretending to be mad, orders his followers to shoot arrows into Saturninus’ court with letters attached begging the gods to assist him. Word arrives to Saturninus that Lucius has joined with the Goths and is bringing an army to conquer Rome.

CONFESSION: Aaron finds his way to the Goth camp and is captured, where he reveals his crimes to Lucius in exchange for sparing the life of his child. A Roman messenger offers Lucius a meeting to negotiate with Saturninus at Titus’ house. Lucius accepts.

REVENGE: Believing that Titus is mad, Tamora and her sons appear at his house, disguised as the gods of Revenge, Rape, and Murder to answer his crazed letters. Titus begs Tamora to leave Rape and Murder with him for a while. The instant she leaves, Titus slits the throats of Chiron and Demetrius and bakes their blood and powdered bones into two meat pies.

FINAL FEAST: Titus welcomes Lucius, Saturninus, and Tamora to his home, serving Tamora her own sons’ flesh for dinner. After killing Lavinia to quell the shame she has suffered, he reveals what is in the pie and then stabs Tamora. Saturninus kills Titus; Lucius kills Saturninus. Lucius becomes the new emperor and orders all of the bodies buried except for Tamora’s, which is to be thrown to wild animals. He orders Aaron to be buried chest-deep in the ground to starve to death. Order is restored to Rome as the cycle of vengeance finally ends.

OF TITUS ANDRONICUS

JUSTIN BALDWIN (Gaius, Bassianus, Alarbus, Messenger, Tribune, Goth | Debut Season) Justin is very excited to be making his Orlando Shakespeare Theater debut. Having just migrated south from Cincinnati, OH, Justin was recently seen in Seaside Repertory Theatre's Den of Thieves in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Justin served three seasons and one year touring as an artistic associate with the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival. Favorite productions with KSF include Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Pericles, and Measure for Measure. Cincinnati credits include Kent in reasons to be pretty (LCT award for featured actor in a play '12), The History Boys at New Stage Collective, and Caine Mutiny Court Martial with Covedale Theatre. Justin was voted the Cincinnati / Dayton "Person to Watch" by Broadwayworld.com. Thanks to Jim for the opportunity, everyone at Orlando Shakes, and his family for their support. All else aside, Justin's all time favorite role is that of husband to his amazing and talented better half.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES - REVENGE

“Revenge Tragedy” was the style of many blockbuster hits on the Elizabethan stage. In response to smash hits from Thomas Kyd (The Spanish Tragedy) and Christopher Marlowe (Tamburlaine the Great), the burgeoning young Shakespeare threw his hat into the ring with Titus Andronicus, which became the most successful and most frequently performed of all of his plays during his lifetime, eerily similar to the horror blockbusters of our own times (such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and many others).

Underlying the blood and gore of the classic “Revenge Tragedy” lies an ailing kingdom. A hero declares revenge in order to cleanse his land of its sickness, but in the process he always ends up destroying himself as well. Much like Hamlet (also a revenge tragedy), few men and no women are left standing at the end of Titus Andronicus. In order for the cycle of revenge to stop and for the world to return to order, everyone in the cycle must be destroyed. Titus contains the most murders of any of Shakespeare’s plays; a murder happens approximately every 97 lines of text.

Shakespeare uses Roman and Greek mythology as a basis of metaphor for the plights of characters throughout Titus Andronicus. Aaron likens Lavinia to the chaste Lucrece who committed suicide after being raped. Another major metaphor comes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses - the story of Philomel, who was raped by her sister’s husband, Tereus, and her tongue cut out to prevent her from revealing his name. But Philomel wove a tapestry that revealed Tereus’ crime, which led her sister to murder Tereus’ son, boil his body, and feed him to Tereus out of revenge.

Ritual cannibalism is invoked from several legends as themes in Titus. The Roman god Saturn (ironically, Saturninus is a character in Titus) devoured his sons so they could not take his crown, but he was overthrown by his son Jupiter (Zeus). Later Tantalus, a son of Zeus, fed his son, Pelops, to the gods in mockery of them. Pelops was restored to life by the gods but later he was cursed, and his son Atreus murdered his brother Thyestes’ sons by cooking and feeding them to their father, taunting him with their severed hands and feet.

So, in the tradition of Greek and Roman mythology, Titus Andronicus proves that although revenge may be a dish best served cold, it can also be served piping hot with a side of blood.

TRAGEDY AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY

PAUL BERNARDO* (Marcus Andronicus, Tribune, Goth | 6th Season) Paul is thrilled to be performing in his seventh Shakespeare production at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Previously, Paul has appeared in Orlando Shakes productions of Julius Ceasar (Brutus), The Two Gentlemen of Verona (Outlaw, Lobby Singer), Hamlet (Claudius), The Winter’s Tale (Polixenes, Antigonus), Measure for Measure (Duke Vincentio), and Macbeth (Banquo), as well as various PlayFest readings and workshops. Paul has also appeared in numerous industrials and commercials as well as independent and feature films, including Brian de Palma's Snake Eyes. Paul is a proud graduate of the Shakespeare Theater Company’s Academy for Classical Acting MFA program at the George Washington University.

JONATHAN EPSTEIN* (Titus Andronicus, Goth | 2nd Season) Jonathan is very happy to be making his third visit to Orlando Shakespeare Theater (King Lear, 2006; PlayFest, 2012). He has performed on and off-Broadway, in London’s West End, and at dozens of regional theatres across the country, notably at Shakespeare & Company where in more than 50 productions he has played kings, clowns, and everything in between from Lear, Richard III and Macbeth to Touchstone, Feste and Dogberry. He is much in demand as a lecturer, especially on Shakespeare’s Sonnets; is finishing a book on classical acting, and is a two-time recipient of Boston’s Elliot Norton award for Outstanding Actor. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife Ariel Bock and their sons Wolfe, Tiger and Benjamin – all actors. This is his first Titus and is dedicated to his grandfathers Herman Wenkart and Julius Epstein.

DANIELLE GOSSELIN (Martius, Aemilius, Nurse | Debut Season) Danielle is excited to be performing at Orlando Shakes again after appearing as Lucy Steele in Sense and Sensibility. She grew up in Western Massachusetts and is currently pursuing her MFA Acting degree at the University of Central Florida. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Murray State University in Kentucky. Favorite roles include Jesus in Godspell, Alice Ford in the opera The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Yente in Fiddler on the Roof. She is so grateful for Nathan.

GREG JACKSON* (Saturninus, Tribune | Debut Season) Greg co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in the off-Broadway hit DUET! with creative partner Erin Quinn Purcell. The duo received a Jonathan Larson grant for their underwater musical-fantasia A Fish Story and the award for Most Outstanding Overall Production in the 2005 NYC International Fringe Festival with their biker-babe-boobfest Go-Go Kitty, Go! Off Broadway: The 39 Steps (New World Stages). Regional/Touring credits: Many seasons at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Portland Center Stage, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Geva, Pioneer, Tennessee Rep, The Acting Company. GREG JOUBERT (Chiron, Tribune | Debut Season) Greg is extremely excited to be appearing on the Orlando Shakespeare Theater stage once again. A former student of the BFA program at Virginia Commonwealth University, he was most recently seen in both Othello (ensemble) and Sense and Sensibility (John Dashwood). Other favorite roles include the Dauphin in Henry V and Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice. Greg would like to thank his mother and Megan for their continued love and support.

GEOFFREY KENT* (Lucius, Tribune | 2nd Season) Geoffrey recently performed Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet and Iachimo in Cymbeline for Orlando Shakes. He is a member of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival's Resident Acting Company where he has appeared as Benedick, Mercutio, Orsino, Edmund, Macduff, Aramis and other one-named characters. Other recent roles include Paris in Romeo & Juliet, Ratcliffe in Richard III and Lodovico in Othello for the Denver Center Theatre Company, Daniel in Complete Works (abridged) for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Richard Lionheart in The Lion in Winter for the Arvada Center and Crumpet in The Santaland Diaries for the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company. He teaches at the University of Denver and has a small chihuahua named Titus, no relation.

KELLY KILGORE (Lavinia | Debut Season) Kelly is honored to share the stage with this incredible cast. Some of Kelly's Orlando credits include Fanny Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility and Felicity in The Farndale ... Christmas Carol (both at Orlando Shakes), and The Baker's Wife in Into the Woods (UCF). Other favorite roles include Ariel in The Tempest, the title role in Kiss Me Kate!, and Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting and Musical Theatre from Abilene Christian University and is completing her third year of a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from UCF. ALEX KOLLER (Mutius, Young Lucius | Debut Season) A student at the Howard Middle School Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, Alex has been involved with many productions including Annie Jr. as Rooster, Honk Jr. as the Bullfrog, Macy's Yes, Virginia The Musical, and A Midsummer Night's Dream as Nick Bottom. He plays viola in the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, and is also an avid pianist and tennis player. A huge dog and cat lover, Alex also enjoys world history and astronomy.

CASEY NOBLE (Quintus, Publius, Goth | Debut Season) Casey has performed locally in Breakthrough!; Vinegar Tom; Exit, Pursued By a Bear; Sense and Sensibility; Othello; A Year with Frog and Toad; and many more. He holds a BFA from the University of Central Florida in Theatre Performance. He’s excited to be a part of this productions and hopes all of you are having as much fun watching as he is performing.

ESAU PRITCHETT* (Aaron | 3rd Season) Esau is a graduate of The Music/Theatre/Dance Department of Oakland University. Originally from Saginaw, MI, Esau relocated to NYC in 1998. Over the past fifteen years he has worked in Regional Theatre all over the US. He has also been featured as a guest star on several episodes of the Law and Order franchise. He has appeared in local Independent films in NYC. Reprising his previous role as Othello this season, Esau was last seen here in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. He is very excited to return and looking forward to a successful season and the exuberant support from the wonderful Orlando community.

ERIC T. HAUGEN**(Lighting Designer | 18th Season)Through his company, Luminous Design Studios, Eric has designed the lighting for numerous theater, television, architectural, and themed entertainment projects over the past 25 years. Mr. Haugen has lit many productions here at Orlando Shakespeare Theater, beginning in 1995 with Othello and The Taming of the Shrew at Lake Eola up through last season’s production of Red. GEOFFREY KENT(Fight Director | 2nd Season)Geoffrey recently choreographed Romeo & Juliet and Cymbeline for Orlando Shakes. He is the resident fight director for the Denver Center Theatre Company (Richard III, King Lear, 1001, Othello) and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival (Treasure Island, Hamlet, Three Musketeers, Macbeth). Other credits include Complete Works (abridged) for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Lieutenant of Inishmore for Curious Theatre Company, Romeo & Juliet for the Aspen Ballet and Carmen for Opera Colorado. He teaches stage combat for the University of Denver, is a past president of the Society of American Fight Directors and a recipient of the 2011 Henry Award for Achievement in Stage Violence. www.thefightguy.com

STACY RENEE NORWOOD*(Stage Manager | 6th Season)After graduating in 2006 from Rollins College, Stacy went on to professionally stage-manage multiple seasons at the Depot Theatre, Orlando Shakes, and spent last summer at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Selected stage management credits include: Sense and Sensibility, Othello, A Tuna Christmas, Oscar And Felix, Hank Williams: Lost Highway, Pippin, Big Bang, Chaps! A Jingle Jangle Christmas, Hamlet, All’s Well That Ends Well, as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Pride and Prejudice in repertory. Stacy is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. BOB PHILLIPS** (Scenic Design | 19th Season)Bob has designed over seventy-five sets for Orlando Shakes over the past 19 years. Bob also regularly works with Pennsylvania Shakespeare, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Alpine Theatre Project, Florida Studio Theatre, and various companies in NYC. Bob is Production Designer for Sesame Street and Come on Over. He has received the Outer Critics Circle, Madison, Villager and Lillian Stoates awards for his theater work, and six Emmy Awards for his television designs. Assistant to Mr. Phillips: David Lepore.

BRITT SANDUSKY(Sound Design | 8th Season)Britt is thrilled to be part of this production team once again. He was formally trained at the Audio Recording Technology Institute here in Orlando. Britt has designed the soundscapes for many Orlando Shakespeare Theater favorites including Othello, Sense and Sensibility, Race, The Importance Of Being Earnest, The 39 Steps, Shotgun, Schoolhouse Rock Live!, Robinson Crusoe, and many others. He also mixed live music for what is affectionately known as the “Beer Tent” on the “Green Lawn of Fabulousness” during the Orlando Fringe Festival last year. His film credits include many disciplines such as Foley artist, re-recording engineer, ADR supervisor, dialog mixer, and sound effects supervisor.

LISA ZINNI**(Costume Design | 3rd Season)Lisa is happy to be returning to Orlando Shakes where she previously designed King Lear, and The Imaginary Invalid. Lisa a New York based Costume Designer and Stylist, Working for Broadway, Off-Broadway and Regionally as well as on film and commercial projects. Her Broadway credits include Associate Designer for RENT and HAIR and this season’s A Christmas Story the Musical. Some design venues include The Roundabout Theatre Underground, The Arden Theatre Co, Riverside Theatre Vero, Two River Shakespeare, The Cape Playhouse, Peoples Light and Theatre Co, The kef Company ,The NY Fringe Festival.
