She reached her goal—20,000 Temple Endowments

Hilda Tovey Knighton King, 94, of Idaho Falls, died Oct 6, 2000 at her home. She was born Jan 12, 1906 at Woods Cross, UT the first of 12 children of James Knighton and Harriet Tovey Knighton. She spent her early years in Woods Cross and Bountiful, UT, and when she was 13 she moved with her family to Moore Idaho. On Nov. 28, 1923, she married Ellis Reed King in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He died in 1982. She cared for her home and family and operated the Darlington, Idaho Post Office from her home for 17 years from 1928-1945. She is survived by her six daughters and six sons, 65 grandchildren, 144 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, she served in many church positions, the most recent being Cub Scout den leader at age 85. In the past 15 years, she COMPLETED 20,000 ENDOWMENTS at the Idaho Falls temple. She enjoyed painting, handwork, crocheting, tatting, gardening and playing the violin and mandolin. ************************* Now picture in your mind this woman. She is approximately 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 80 lbs at best. She lived across from the temple so she would walk over to the temple first thing in the morning and walk back when she was done. Sometimes in the winter the temple security personnel would

walk her to and from the temple to make sure she didn't slip on the ice. There were a couple of times that her furnace quit working for a couple of days, but since she wasn't at home, she didn't worry about it. When the temple maintenance crew found out, they would go to her home and take care of it. I think everyone that worked at the temple looked out for her. Sister King would spend Mondays making bread, take a loaf to one of her friends, and then bring a few pieces to the temple with her each day. When she got hungry, she would eat a piece of bread between sessions so she didn't have to stop for meals. She has done, on an average, 105 endowment sessions A MONTH during the past 15 years. She would start at 5:00 A.M. and do approximately seven sessions a day (she even had her own changing booth). Sister King had made a goal to complete 20,000 endowments before she passed away. She would get upset when her family would take her away from the temple for holidays or other occasions, keep in mind these were all excellent reasons to be gone, but she had a goal and didn't want anything to detour her from accomplishing it. Sister King completed her 20,000th endowment on Friday, September 30th at 5:00 (Sister Armstrong was not sure if it was A.M. of P.M.) and 60 of her family members went through the 7:00 P.M. session with her to celebrate. She came back Saturday morning and did a few more sessions. In all, she completed 20,007 endowments.

On Friday when she met her goal, she told the temple president that she had accomplished her goal and was now going to be with her sweetheart. She got sick on Sunday and her family took her to the hospital on Monday. She passed away one week after reaching her goal. I will miss seeing her at the temple; she was there almost every time I went (even in the evening sessions). While I was at the temple today, Sister Armstrong made the comment "it is going to take over 100 people a month (considering most people go once a month) to accomplish the same number of endowments as one sister did in the same time frame." Now, one more visual for you. The new Conference Center holds 21,000 people. Wasn't she an amazing woman! She is going to be shaking hands and giving hugs for a very long time!!! “Ways to Find, Sustain and Share Happiness” by Carol Tuttle Happiness is a choice. The more happiness you generate the more life presents you with experiences to feel happy about. If you are feeling blue or downright depressed, make the decision to “get happy.” The following are some of her tips that may help you…

1. Choose to be happy rather than right. 2. Pay it forward. For every kind deed others do to you

do a kind deed for someone else. 3. Write thank-you notes frequently. The energy of

gratitude feeds happiness. 4. Smile, even if you don’t feel like it, you eventually will. 5. When you think a complimentary thought about

someone—tell them. 6. Refrain from judgments—think something positive

instead. 7. Turn on your favorite song and sing or whistle along. 8. Hug someone tight. 9. Give service to someone more needy than you. 10. Exercise, pray and meditate regularly.

“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called ‘The Present.’” anonymous

Make a Joy Room- By Kay Bradford What is your favorite room in your home? Where do you like to spend most of your time? For me, it is a wonderful room which I call my “Joy Room.” It was inspired when my 16-year-old granddaughter came and spent a month with me. She found a box of trophies, plaques, and ribbons I had received years before and she put them up on the wall. Yes, they were my trophies, but what about my true treasures—my family? I had many snapshots, which I had taken over the years, enlarged and put them on the opposite wall. These were pictures of my husband, myself, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, aunts, uncles, etc. On another wall I put some of my favorite thoughts and quotes. Just a few examples are: “Some day when you know who you really are,

you will be sorry that you didn’t use your time better.”

“Relax, God’s in charge.”

“We write our own destiny… We become what we do.”

“What would Jesus do?”

Joy room cont. On another wall I have graduation programs, marriage announcements, baby announcements, baptism programs, missionary farewells, special places I’ve been, The Proclamation on the Family, posters of favorite scriptures, pictures of temples, a “Faith in Every Footstep” pillowcase signed by family and friends, pictures of the Savior and the First Presidency etc. I love to sit in my “Joy Room”. It is like an open scrapbook of wonderful memories and blessings. I challenge you to make your own “Joy Room” or at least find a space, table top or wall to display those things that remind you of what is most important.

A Few Things I’ve Learned… About Being

Young at Heart By Kay Bradford

-Always be happy and cheerful…Smile a lot. -Always be positive. -Just one person saying to me, “You’ve made my day” makes my day! You be that person to others! -Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is a spouse, family, pet, keepsakes, music, plants, art, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. -Cherish your health, eat good food and exercise. -Don’t take guilt trips… Go to the mall, another country, but not to “guilt.” -Money is wonderful, but it doesn’t buy joy, peace and happiness. -Prayer is the answer to most every problem. - At every opportunity tell the people you love, that you love them. -Serve others. -Surround yourself with happiness. -Be swift to be kind -Lavish love on others -Focus on what you have… not on what you lack.

YOUNG AT HEART -Everyone treats you so nice. -You are more patient—less judgmental. -Your children are raised and you can enjoy being an observer, encourager, and supporter. -You get to attend baby blessings, missionary farewells, baptisms, weddings, family gatherings, etc. -You have experienced sorrow, disappointments, grief and pain, but you have survived with your testimony intact and been strengthened by His grace. As a result you are more understanding and compassionate. -You have more time for learning. -You have more time to read and watch old movies.

\

-You have more time for serving. -You have more time to listen. -You’ve endured to the end….almost!

Time is of the Essence

An excerpt from a testimonial By Kay Bradford

“I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here I will not waste my time lamenting what could have been or worrying about what will be. I will enjovy every moment to the fullest and cram in as many happy times as I can. I will enjoy every sunrise and sunset, and watch the birds as they fly from limb to limb.

I know I am sometimes forgetful, but then again, some of life is just as well forgotten and I eventually remember the important things.

I have seen too many dear friends and family leave this world too soon, before they understood the great freedom that comes from aging. I plan to make my years from 80 to 90 my finest!”
