Parent-Teacher Conferences

What do you do at a parent-tescherconts-rence?

You will meet your child's teacherand talk about your child's education. Ifyour child is having problems in school, youcan ask the teacher about them. Theteacher can tell you what your child islearning and how well he/she is doing inclass.

It scares many parents to go to aschool and meet a new teacher. Remem-ber, teachers are people, too. They don'tknow everything. As a parent, you are yourchild's first leacher. Both you and theteacher can learn 'from each other abouthow to help your child learn better.

Questions?

Do you have some questions youwould like to ask about your child's school-ing? Write them down as you think of them.Bring yol.w list of questions to the confer-ence with you.

The teacher can tell you how yourchild is learning, how he/she feels aboutschool, how your child acts with others. The teacher can show you a sample of yourchild's work. You have a right to see yourchild's test scores, including 10 test andachievement tests. Ask what the testmeasures and what the score tells you.

vtiYou can share how your child acts

at home, what his/her favorite things to doare, special talents, health problems, andany concerns you have. You may want toask the teacher:

How does my child act in school? Is he/she happy in school? Is my child tyinghard and doing his/her best?

Is my child having any problems with adass? Are there any classes he/she doesnot like?

How can I help my child at home? Arethere materials you can send home for usto work on together?

You can help your child learn byshowing an interest. Parent-teacher con-ferences give you the chance to show youcare what your child is learning.

Your Child's Talents

Every child isspecial. Each of your +children may havetalents in differentareas. One may be

in music oranothervery good in art

sports. Other childrenmay have gifts inmath or languages, inworking with otherchildren or with theirhands. As a parentyou have the bestchance to learn about your child's specialtalents. You can watch and listen as yourchildren grow. Find out what they enjoy doingand what they do well. You are discoveringyour child's gifts. Encourage your child to useand develop these talents.

IMO

How can you help your child develop talents?

First of all, believe thatyour child's gifts areimportant Support efforts.Admire frst drawings, forinstance. Ask questions toshow that ylu care enoughto have looked at thedrawings. Put them up onthe wall so that all can see

them. If your child's gifts are in sports, findtime to share those interests too. Play catch.Listen to the stories about the games.

Encourage your children to use theirfree time to develop their gifts rather thanwatch TV.

Also, when you have a conferencewith your child's teachers, let them knowabout your children's talents. They can helpyour chilcten use thet talents.

You can also shareyour interests and gifts withyour chilcten. Teach themsomething that you do well.Do you have a craft? If so,give your children the chanceto watch your work. Perhaps :I pthey can help in some wayand begin to learn the craftthemselves. Do you enjoy singing? Sharethis gift with your children. Plan family timesfor singing. You may awaken a love of musicthat will be theirs for the rest of their lives.

Often special talents can lead people tojobs that they will enjoy as adults. The childwho spends time on the ball field now mayfind that he or she wants to be a high schoolcoach. The child who has developed a gift formath may think of a career as an accountantor engineer. Gifts may also be the basis foradult hobbies. But perhaps most important, your children's talents can make them feelgood about themselves. The talents theydevelop will make them unique. As a parent, you can help.
