TRANSFER STUDENTS FROMTWO-YEAR COLLEGES IN
NORTH CAROLINA
MAY 1974THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA
GENERAL ADMINISTRATION
PREFACE
This third edition of the Policies of Senior Colleges andUniversities Concerning Transfer Students from Two-Year Collegesin North Carolina was prepared under the aegis the Joint Com-Rittee on College Transfer Students and published at the requestof the committee by The University of North Carolina General
-Administration.
The publication is designed to serve primarily as a reference
for advisors, counselors, and others in the guidance of students at
two-year institutions who plan to transfer to senior colleges anduniversities of North Carolina. The policies of each of the 45senior institutions pertaining to the admissions of and grantingof credit to transfer students and related matters are enumeratedin this one document. The compilation saves persons needing suchinformation the time and effort which otherwise would be requiredto go through the inaividual institutional catalogs. Even thenthe information sought may not be found since some catalogs pre-sent less information about transfer policies than this report.
As was the case for the original edition, the statements of
policies reported herein were obtained through a questionnairecompleted by the admissions officers of the senior institutions. The policies, which apply to the 1974-75 academic year, appear by
institution in alphabetical order.
No attempt was made to edit the institutional responses. In
fact, exact wording of the respondents is used insofar as possible.Readers should familiarize themselves with the questionnaire itemsin order to interpret more accurately the responses. The question-naire is appended.
The information was gatheredtand compiled by a subcommittee of
the Joint Committee on College Transfer Students of the North Caro-lina Association of Colleges and Universities, the State Board ofEducation, the North Carolina Association of Junior Colleges, and
The University of North Carolina.
The subcommittee consisted of:
Jerry L. Surratt (Chairman), Dean of AcademicAffairs, Wingate College, Wingate
Bobby L. Anderson, Director, College Transferand General Education, Department of CommunityColleges of the State Board of Education, Raleigh
John F. Corey, Assistant Vice President forStudent Services and Special Programs, TheUniversity of North Carolina
Special thanks go to Dean Surratt and his secretarialstaff, who collected and compiled the information. Likewise, gratitude is expressed to Dr. Corey and his secretary, Mrs.Anna Carr, who prepared the manuscript for publication.Additional appreciation is due the General Administration ofThe University of North'Carolina for publishing at the requestof the Joint Committee this important reference for the highereducation community in North Carolina.

APPENDIX II
UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFERS IN NORTH CAROLINA1973 - 74*
This section provides information on undergraduate student transfers
from one institution to another within the state and from institutions
in other states to North Carolina institutions. Data on student
transfers from North Carolina to other states are not included.
Informatin on undergraduate transfers by type of institution for an
eight-year period is presented in Table 26.
Figure 6 shows the flow of transfers among and within each of the
four types of institutions in the state and from institutions in other
states in fall 1973. The actual number of transfers by type of institu-
tion and by sex is shown in Table 27. A comparison of the flow of
transfers with its counterflow reveals that the community colleges
received fewer transfers (2,032) than they sent to other types of
institutions (2,442). The public senior institutions received over
one-third more transfers from private senior colleges (668) than they
sent to private senior colleges (371).
Detailed information on the origin and destination of transfers
in the state is presented in Table 28 (from two-year to senior institu-
tions), Table 29 (among senior institutions), Table 30 (from senior
to two-year colleges), and Table 31 (among two-year institutions).
From the data in these tables, a comparison of the numbers of in-
transfers and out-transfers of any given institution can be made.
Transfers from other states to various types of North Carolina insti-
tutions are shown in Table 32. About one-half of the out-of-state
transfers emanate from the neighboring states of Virginia, South
Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee.
