[Title for Project-Based Learning Exercise]

EL Civics Objective 22 (Recreation) • IH(ADVTask 1: Complete a Chart

Language & Literacy Objectives:

1. Consult newspapers or other media to identify performances to attend and facilities to visit.

2. Organize ticket purchases, transportation, and other logistics for cultural and/or recreational activities.

3. Read posters, playbills, etc. for cultural and/or recreational activities.

8. Locate recreational facilities in the community and list activities, cost of services, and hours of operation.

INTRODUCTION

In this lesson, students will learn about leisure-time, cultural and recreational activities in the local community and the Greater Los Angeles area. They will identify their own interests and explore new activities as well. Students will learn how to read posters, playbills and brochures for information about local events and activities.

ASSESSMENT TASK

Student will complete a chart with 10 items of information about a leisure-time, cultural or recreational activity or venue. 22 pts possible (2 pts each correct answer; 2 pts for legibility).

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

· Class Survey: List on the board all the recreational activities available in your community. Check the things you go. Compare your answers with classmates. Total the responses. What are the trends?

· Bring a local newspaper to class. Look in the Entertainment section (e.g. Sunday Calendar, LA Times, or Rave – Fri – Daily Breeze. Are there any interesting events? Where are they located? How much do they cost? What can you do there?

continued …

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES (continued)

· Bring in the “Seasons” guide from the City of Torrance. Decide on an interesting activity as a class (or in groups). Make plans to do this activity together!

· Work on different verb tenses: Describe past activities, current activities, what you will do this weekend, this summer, what you would like to do in the future. Have students make a pictorial timeline of activities.

· Browse through the TAS program brochure. What classes, events and recreational activities are available? How much do they cost? How can you register?

· Plan a class or group field trip, e.g. Getty Museum (see green info sheet – p. 5). Pre-activity: Groups report on what they will be doing. What do they need to make trip happen? Research information and logistics. Groups within class can plan separate trips & report to each other on plans. (Can be imaginary or real.) Post-activity: Report back to class about activity if real trip.

COMPUTER LAB IDEAS

· Create presentation about favorite hobby. Describe & explain how they got started. Use Internet to find pictures, or use scanner. (Word, PPT, Internet)

· Research local activities and events online; create brochure, poster or playbill. (Word or Publisher, Internet).

· Interview a Parks & Recreation employee about classes and activities available for kids, seniors; write a summary or create a presentation. (Word or PowerPoint)

· Create and send “thank you” cards (or postcards) to host or organizer after class field trip (e.g. Scott from Getty Museum), using Publisher or online card service.

· Conduct research online to plan a class trip (e.g. find map & directions; find venue floor plan and prepare for visit; look up hours, ticket prices, things to do, etc.).

· Write comparison of recreational activities & cultural events in native countries & U.S. Ex: Is it common to go to movie theaters? Sporting events? Plays? Museums? Describe similarities and differences between cultures.

GETTY MUSEUM FIELD TRIP: INFORMATION SHEET

In February 2007, I met with Scott Winterrowd, Education Specialist from the Getty. He gave me a lot of info to pass along to you about preparing for, arranging and conducting field trips to the Museum:

· The Getty provides instructional materials for Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced ESL classes. Training is offered to introduce you to the materials and how to integrate them into your class. Materials include lesson plans, worksheets, transparencies and images. All materials are available online to download (docs in Word). There are also additional images on the website. (See “Related Websites” for links to online materials.)

· You may arrange bus transportation with the Getty for your class any time the Getty is open: Closed Monday; open 10-6 T-W-Th-Sun; Open 10-9 Fri & Sat. They will send a bus to pick up you & your students, take you to the Museum, and return you to school. Busses are free. No children allowed (due to liability issues). Students bringing children should make arrangements to drive themselves and meet your class at the museum. Ask Scott about parking passes.

· In order to reserve a bus, you must first attend Scott’s training on his instructional materials. (See back of this sheet for next training date.)

· Bus reservations must be made no later than 3-4 weeks in advance. Contact Scott Winterrowd: [email protected] BE SURE TO GET A FIELD TRIP FORM SIGNED BY YOUR ADMINISTRATOR, WITH A COPY TO PORTIA (1 week in advance).

· Scott will send museum maps if requested with reservation.

· If your class plans to send thank you cards, please let Scott know in advance (via email). At your request, he will send you one response that you can share with your students, letting them know he received their cards. He cannot respond to each individual message.
