TITLE AND ABSTRACT
Title: PLM Checkup via IpX Certification
Abstract:
Modern product development is dependent on enabling business tools to keep system requirements clear, concise, and valid. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools are a key enabler of efficient Configuration Management. When world class Configuration Management processes are integrated into PLM systems the result is Integrated Process Excellence.
Just like our bodies require frequent health checkups/physicals to detect the creep in of illness/decay/etc., IpX certification of enabling PLM tools can provide a checkup of our PLM tools as well as measure our effectiveness in our adoption of these enabling business systems. The IpX Global Congress subcommittee for PLM Certification will present results of a yearlong assessment of the IpX enabling tool certification process from a balanced people, process, and tool perspective.

Mission statement:Understand and Streamline the PLM tool CM2 certification process from a people, process, and tool perspective via a pathfinder tool certification (Siemens PLM’s Teamcenter). Present results at 2018 IpX Symposium.
Brief description of goals: • Process Perspective: Review the CMII-600 Rev E Enabling Tool Pre-Assessment Guide and
provide feedback to IpX on requirement/process clarifications. • People Perspective: Develop method for company self-assessment on how to best adopt a
certified tool and risk of not doing so. A 5 star certified tool not leveraged is of little value.
• Tool Perspective: Pathfind certification best practices leveraging Siemens PLM Software’s Teamcenter PLM tool. Develop certification best practices to be forward shared for future certifications.

APPROACH OVERVIEW
• Spreadsheet aligned with goals that lists:
• Process• Feedback to IpX on requirements clarity and applicability
• Provide requirement feedback on 106 enabling tool requirements
• Business Risk based view based on right criteria (people, process, tool considerations considered)
• People• Adoption View (assume you had a 5 star tool…do you use it?)
• Tool• Score against CM2-500 106 enabling tool requirements• GAPs identified for Teamcenter and closed resulting in 4 star
certification

Software is taking over the world and need considerations for language to reflect this in this requirement.

•Not all requirements are of equal imperative to the business
• Implementation of some requirements are dependent on other requirements; order of implementation matters
• Interesting to note different industry strengths determined by implementation priorities
•Provided feedback for requirement language enhancements to IpX

Lack of Training, Cost of Entry/effecitivy confusion within the masses (some CM specialists
understand), lack of planning culture
Caveat to this scoring: Development of software is occuring external to Teamcenter, but end item baselines for software deliveries could be managed in Teamcenter.

OBJECTIVES OF TOOL CERTIFICATION PATHFINDING
• Webster Dictionary Definition of pathfinder: a person or group that is the first to do something and that makes it possible for others to do the same thing
• Pathfinding was around the subcommittee approach to certification; other tools have already been certified without subcommittee support (e.g. CMPro, CMIS).
• Committee had common needs around Teamcenter as a pathfinding enabling tool.
• Templatize PLM tool certification; as PLM tools get certified the messaging on the need for good CM also gets amplified to our leaders.
• Subcommittee becomes arbitrator between IpX and Vendor

THE BOTTOM LINE: PLM MATTERS…ENSURE IT IS HEALTHYAccuracy & completeness of an organization’s information backbone is critical
Adapted from ICM’s CM2 materials and CIMData inputThe integrity of information and effectiveness of the organization are linkedØ Integrity = accuracy and completeness of the information you
use to make decisionsØ Effectiveness = the ability to respond accurately and quickly
