New Series Case Skid Steers Proving a Popular Choice for CustomersIn late 2011, Case introduced a new series of skids steers with many enhanced features. Complete with a new numbering system and an updated decal package, these machines have quickly established themselves as a hot item in the Titan Rentals network. “Skid steers and compact track loaders (CTLs) are needed on just about every jobsite,” explained Bob Brower, Titan Rentals Account Manager, Fargo, ND. “Whether it’s an excavating job, bridge/road work, landscaping, demolition, etc, you are going to find at least one skid steer or CTL on most jobs. Because of their size and versatility with all the attachments available, we have a lot of units in our fleet and we see them coming and going out of the yard all the time.” The new Case “Alpha” series skid steers and CTLs offer industry-leading operator comfort, power, torque and hydraulic flow in their class. “When we developed the design requirements for the Alpha series machines, our goal was to establish a leadership position in key performance areas that affect customers the most,” explained Jeff Hulse, Case Product Specialist. “With the customers that we worked with on this project, visibility and power were two of the biggest factors that they were looking for in skid steers. That’s what we focused on in the development of this series and I think we’ve seen a great response from the customers who have tried them out in their operation.”

Case offers two classes of skid steers and CTLs. Vertical lift machines are “lift-and-place” units that use a linkage system to maintain the same clearance of the attachment from the cab throughout the lift cycle. They are designated with a “V” in the model (examples include SV185, TV380) and are best suited for material handling and pick-and-carry jobs around a jobsite. Radial lift units do not have linkage and lift loads in an arc. The higher you raise the load the closer it come back to the cab of the unit. Case radial lift skid steers and CTLs are designated with an “R” in the model (examples include SR150 and TR320) and

are designed for digging and pushing applications. Both models will perform a wide variety of general tasks on the jobsite. Titan Rentals stocks a wide variety of Case Alpha skid steer and CTL models and attachments across their locations. Although there are a number of models to choose from in the line-up, the features are common for all models. “One of the biggest advantages to the Case skid steers is the cab,” said Chuck Hersey, Titan Rentals Account Manager, Davenport, IA. “The visibility is better than any other machine that I’ve been around. You can see your bucket edge when you are doing fine grading and the visibility to the back and sides gives the operator confidence while working on a crowded jobsite. It’s also the widest cab in the industry, and the only skid steer with side lighting.” Performance is another important point for rental customers. “Our customers really appreciate the power of these machines,” continued Chuck. “Both the skid steers and the CTLs have the most horsepower in their classes, and bucket break-out force as well. You really notice that when you are on a job site. There’s nothing worse than running an under-powered machine when you are trying to get some work done. We don’t get that complaint from our customers on these units – the power is there if you want to dig in and get some material moved.” The Alpha Series skid steers also have longer wheel bases than the models they replaced. Designed with a 30/70 front/rear weight distribution, the Case Alpha Series skid steer provides superior balance and allows customers to lift and carry larger loads. Case’s new skid steer and CTLs have been a welcome addition to the Titan Rentals fleet. Overall performance, balance and comfort have made these machines a sought-after commodity on job sites across Titan Rental’s footprint.

S&K Environmental, LLC was started eight years ago to address an increasingly important niche in the civil construction projects marketplace. “We specialize in working in sensitive areas such as wetlands and riparian zones on difficult and environmentally sensitive projects,” said Brett Hauser, Project Manager for S&K Environmental. “We are especially reknown in the field of large-scale installation of native plants.”

Not a lot of construction companies have the certifications and experience to take on the type of projects that S&K Environmental specializes in. “Project owners that we typically work with value our proven track-record of successful project completions. We have an extensive list of client references and a team of highly skilled, trained professionals who work for us,” said Brett.

S&K Environmental’s key personnel are Wildland Hydrology, MSHA, HAZWOPER and OSHA certified. Their team is experienced in providing a wide range of environmental reclamation and restoration projects including large scale re-vegetation efforts (mechanical planting, hand planting, and seeding), erosion control, dam reconditioning/decommissioning, stream restoration, road decommissioning, culvert installation/removal, and civil construction. Much of the work has

been done in and around environmentally sensitive areas.

“We’ve done some pretty interesting projects”, explained Brett. “Some of our previous jobs have included planting over 4 million plants at one of the largest EPA superfund sites near Anaconda, MT, and over a mile of stream reconstruction on the Jocko River near Arlee, MT. We employ exclusive revegetation technology that allows us to mechanically plant much faster and efficiently than traditional hand or auger planting. This minimizes our time on-site and gives our crews the ability to plant on terrain that would normally would be prohibitively dangerous or expensive to tackle. We have no problem taking on steep road cuts, riprap, and other difficult terrain.”

Because of the highly specialized nature of most of the projects they work on, the company takes jobs over a wide area of the country. “We have to be ready to quickly mobilize to project sites throughout the western United States,” said Brett. “Right now we’re working in Montana and North Dakota. But we’ll take jobs across the western U.S. That’s one of the reasons we like to work with Titan Rentals. Titan’s footprint provides us with equipment and support across a wide range of where we work.”

While the footprint is important, it’s the equipment and support that keeps S&K Environmental coming back to Titan Rentals. “We primarily use Titan Rentals and Case equipment on our projects because the equipment is efficient and in better condition than other rental dealers we’ve used in the past. Our experience is that the equipment is very reliable and if there is a service issue, our Titan Rentals Account Manager, Don Hinricher at the Missoula office, is always available to correct the issue,” explained Brett.

Like any contractor, equipment-related downtime is not an option. “Our jobs are usually very specialized. One of our current projects on Cemetery Island in Canyon Ferry Reservoir requires us to barge all materials, equipment and personnel to the site daily. We’ve got a fleet of equipment working on the jobsite including excavators, loaders, dozers and skid steers. With work that includes 2600 tons of riprap, 100 trees to plant and 1860 linear feet of vegetated soil lifts, we really can’t afford to have equipment fail on the job. It’s difficult to get in and out with our supplies and people. Titan Rentals has been our most consistent supplier for rental equipment. Their follow through with questions, concerns or any needs is above and beyond what we have ever seen before in a rental company,” said Brett.

“Titan Rental’s commitment to service and parts is unique from what we’ve seen with other rental companies,” continued Brett. “Not only do they keep their own fleet in tip-top condition, we’ve been using them to work on our own fleet as well. They are truly a full-service operation. We’ve had

them deliver equipment to some pretty remote locations. We’ve been able to count on Titan for just about anything that we run into.

“In a company like ours with such a diversified mix of projects it is nice to have a partner like Titan Rentals to support our efforts. As a small company, we do not always own all the equipment needed to complete our projects. Titan Rentals has always been a valuable partner for us to ensure that we are able to get the job done on time and on budget,” said Brett. “They will continue to be our first choice for rental equipment and we look at them as a valuable partner as we grow our business.”

Maximizing Rubber Track Life on Compact Track LoadersSince compact track loaders (CTLs) hit the rental scene a significant number of customers that would normally run a skid steer have switched to renting CTLs. Track machines offer some advantages over wheel skid steers, including: · Better floatation · Increased stability while carrying loads · Easier to hold/maintain final grade · Increased tractive effort over wheeled machines while going into a pile or pushing material · No tires to go flat However, these advantages have to be weighed against the higher acquisition cost of CTLs (reflected in the higher rental rate charged for them) and the higher cost of replacing tracks as they wear out. Rental rates are easy to compare and you can make your own call on whether the higher productivity of a track machine in many applications are worth the extra cost. Rubber track wear and replacement cycles is something that is manageable and can be maximized by following some simple rules: (1) Avoid rocks, compacted gravel, concrete demolition, and other difficult surfaces. They can tear-up the track at an accelerated rate. Rubber track will have the longest life in dirt and sand applications where ground conditions are soft. (2) Keep the tracks properly tensioned. Over-tensioning will cause excessive wear on the tracks and under- carriage components. Under-tensioning can cause the tracks to come off. A quick rule-of-thumb for checking track tension involves parking the unit on a flat surface, suspending it off the ground by 2 inches and measuring the distance from the top of the lower track surface to the bottom of one of the center track rollers. The sag should be 5/8-1” – any more than that means the track needs to be tightened, less means it’s running too tight. (3) Avoid turning the CTL the same direction every time. Continuous turning to the same side can accelerate wear of sprocket teeth, track tread, guide lugs, and roller flanges. (4) Make wide, gradual turns instead of tight spins or pivots with the machine, especially when carrying heavy loads. This will reduce wear and lessen the chance for de-tracking if the tracks are under-tensioned. Spinning CTLs around in tight turns, especially under heavy loads on hard surfaces such as roads, gravel, parking lots, broken concrete, etc., is one of the highest-wear activities for tracks and undercarriage components and should be avoided whenever possible. (5) Traveling along a slope for extended periods of time will accelerate wear on undercarriage components by putting more pressure on one side of the guide lugs, idlers and rollers than the other. Where possible, it is best to climb straight up or down the slope then turn to run parallel to it while on level ground. (6) Clean out the undercarriage every day of packed clay and other materials. Allowing mud and debris to build-up in the undercarriage will over-tighten the track and put too much pressure the track and other undercarriage components. In cold-weather, it can freeze-up overnight and cause the machine to be inoperable in the morning. Compact track loaders are an excellent, economical tool for many jobs. Track wear is a part of the normal operating costs of running a machine, just like tire wear on a skid steer. And unlike tires, tracks don’t go flat on the job – although they can come off the track assembly if they aren’t properly tensioned. By limiting the high-wear activities through operator awareness and training, you can extend the life of the track and lower operating costs while still being productive on the job.
