School will resume for Term Three on Monday 16 July 2012 at 8.30 am. It is great to see so many of you involved with your families in sports and cultural activities during the week and at the weekend. TAKE THE TIME Many of you have children involved in winter cultural and sports activities. Our school would like to encourage you to TAKE THE TIME TO SPEND TIME with your child by attending his/her activity. We know that if we make time to do this then we all benefit from it and we also meet other parents and gain new friends. If you can also TAKE THE TIME to talk to your child about his/her day at school on a regular basis this would be very much appreciated by our teachers. We look forward to an exciting and full Term Three with one of the highlights being the NZCT AIMS GAMES from 9 September to 15 September. Our students have worked very hard over Term Two and we are very pleased with their writing progress They all deserve a happy and restful break. Academic Report

“A Three Way Conference”

Tuesday 31st July

It is the end of another busy and productive term at Tauranga Intermediate School. Teachers and students have been

working hard to make academic gains in Mathematics, Literacy, Science Fair and individual inquiry within their

classroom programmes. With this in mind it is a great opportunity to unpack the purpose of our Learning Conferences

that take place early next term.

The purpose of these Three Way Conferences is to have our teachers, students, parents, family, and whanau in

communication about our students learning. Students, parents and the classroom teacher will have 5 min each to talk

about where the child is at in relation to National Standards, where they need to get to by the end of the year and the

students next steps to achieve these goals.

Attendance for our Learning Conferences is COMPULSORY!

Please book your conference time online or return the paper copy to your classroom teacher by Wednesday 25th July.

The vision of The New Zealand Curriculum is for our young people to be confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners.

Learning Conferences will:

• Communicte clear, dependable information about progress and achievement, and provides a basis for building

a strong partnership between the child, the teacher and the childʼs parents, family and whānau to support

learning and improve their academic outcomes.

• Provide information about a childʼs learning, progress and achievement that can then be used to support

further learning.

A successful three way conference at Tauranga Intermediate will enable:

• all parents, family and whānau:

◦ to understand how their childrenʼs learning is progressing

◦ to become active, involved supporters of their childʼs learning and the school programme

OUR VISION : EXPLORING PERSONAL POTENTIAL

Page 4: TIS Newsletter 10

Tauranga Intermediate School Newsletter 28 June 2012 Vol 10!

• all students to build a strong sense of achievement, self-efficacy, and motivation to engage with future

learning

• students who would normally ʻswitch offʼ when faced with low achievement to remain motivated and willing

to learn, and students who are already disengaged to regain motivation

Roles within the Conference process1. Tauranga Intermediate and your child's teacher:

The role of our school is to support a learning focused relationship between the teacher, the student, and their

parents, family and whānau. This should:

• help the student to become increasingly capable of initiating conversations about what is being learnt

• provide parents, family and whānau with the information they need

• help parents, family and whānau to know how to support childrenʼs learning with the information they

receive

2. Parents, families and whānau

The role of parents, families and whānau is to support their children to learn.

They can do this best if they:

• have clear, good quality information about what their child is learning

• use everyday opportunities to interact with their children in ways that support further learning such as:

◦ responding to them as they talk about what they are learning

◦ providing opportunities for learning practice

◦ providing affirmation/praise of what has been learnt and progress made

• feel comfortable and confident engaging with their school to find out what is being learnt, where their

children are in the learning sequence, what the next steps are, and what they can do to support further

learning.

We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 31st July.

50 years ago the scourge of racism was stifling the development of millions of children in America. In 1963, a core group of these courageous young people stood up and said, “Enough!” The story of these child marchers imparts vital lessons that the 21st century child desperately needs to learn from - courage, resistance to peer pressure, empathy, non-violence and conviction.Through Angel’s Eyes brings the story of the 1963 Alabama child marches to life through the eyes of Angel Dunbar - and in Angel we finally have a role model for our times!
