Students learn to communicate in a Spanish, Chinese or Japanese by using their new language

for every day activities as well as academic lessons.

Learning is structured around International Baccalaureate “units of inquiry” that are focused on real

world concepts in science, social studies, math and the arts.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Units of Inquiry

The IB learning cycle begins with questions:

‘What do we already know?’, ‘What do we want to know?’,

‘How are we going to find out?’

Each year classes study six units, one for each globally-applicable IB theme.

The themes help children see their place and opportunities in the world.

One of six IB themes: Sharing the Planet

The fifth grade “Sharing the Planet” unit covers reproductive

processes and body systems. Students are encouraged to ask

and explore questions about plant and animal life.

At every grade level, hands-on experiments enhance learning.

Math: A universal language

Practicing measurement, collecting data, learning place value and fractions: all are part of IB lessons relating math to real world problems.

Technology in the classrooms: A tool for today

Technology gives students additional tools to seek,

analyze, and demonstrate knowledge.

Garden Lessons: Learning the lay of the land

The school garden is a powerful tool for connecting IB science education to real life. As a living laboratory for studying soil,

bugs, and plant growth, the garden also teaches lessons in teamwork, responsibility, and the results of careful nurturing.

Field trips and visiting experts help students explore how

inquiry units apply to real life.

Music class is an integral part of the TIS curriculum. Students learn technical skills as well as

improvisation and collaborative play. They develop a personal connection

to music, and learn skills which apply to other areas of life.”

Sakura Matsuri: Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival

Celebrating contemporary and traditional Japanese culture through student performances with help from our native-speaking staff.

Latino Festival: celebrating all Spanish speaking cultures

At each language track celebration, students demonstrate language and cultural understanding with plays,

dances, poetry and song.

Chinese New Year Festival

Each school festival includes sharing the track’s culture and history with students in other

language tracks.

Lunch and recess!

Three outdoor play areas make wonderful community areas for children to play, learn and grow respectfully with their peers.

5th Grade Capstone Trips AbroadFifth grade classes spend two

weeks in China, Japan or Mexico. The students live with host

families, attend a local school, and visit cultural and historical sites

they have studied in school.

Parents report that their children come back

standing taller, confident and ready to thrive in

middle school and beyond.

IB Exhibition: The culminating experience

Fifth grade students gather data on different aspects of

culture to compare their Capstone host countries with home. They research, analyze and present their findings to

the school community.

Summer Camp: Learning doesn’t stop when the sun comes out!

Children have fun discovering language and culture through hands-on

projects, stories, songs, games and outdoor fun.

Graduation: Watch out, world, here we come!

International School graduates are confident and capable in another

language and culture, with a strong foundation in math, science, social

studies and the arts.

They successfully go on to attend public and private middle schools,

high schools and universities around Oregon and beyond.
