4-H Public Speaking Contest It’s time to work on your 4-H speech or PSA! The Otoe County 4-H Public Speaking Contest is Sunday, April 28, 6:30 p.m. at the Fair

Center in Syracuse. See the enclosed white flyer for the contest guidelines. All PSAs will need to be submitted on a flash drive using .wav or .mp3 audio formats. The PSAs will be played on a DELL computer at the contest. 4-H members can bring their own lap top if they wish. Please also bring one copy of your PSA typed or hand-written. To register or if you have questions, please contact the Extension Office at 402-269-2301. Registration deadline is Wednesday, April 24.

April 15th PENNY PRESS. If you have a Bennet address it will not be in your Penny Press, but you

can pick one up at the First Nebraska Bank in Bennet or the Extension

Office in Syracuse.

Big Red Summer Academic Camp 4-H Foundation Scholarships It’s time to think about your plans for the summer and we have a deal for you! The Otoe County 4-H Foundation will provide five $300 scholarships to Otoe County 4-H members attending a Big Red Summer Academic Camp. These camps allow you to explore careers in: * Animation * Engineering * Filmmaking * Outdoor Nebraska * Teaching * Veterinary Science * Unicameral Youth Legislature * Weather & Climate Science The early bird registration deadline is April 15, the regular registration deadline is May 15, and the late registration deadline is anything after May 15. Details about each camp can be found at: https://4h.unl.edu/big-red-camps. The camps have a different price structure for the individual camps and for the three different deadlines. The early bird registration deadline is less expensive. To register for a Big Red Camp scholarship, contact the Extension Office at 402-269-2301. You will be given a promotional code and information to register online. These five scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, so don’t delay. Contact the Extension Office now, to get your name on the list!

Nebraska State 4-H Camp Near Halsey The Otoe County 4-H Council will provide transportation dollars to any licensed adult providing transportation to ANY camp at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp near Halsey. Adults who take at least three Otoe County youth will be paid $50 each way. Camps will be filled on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to register as soon as possible. Youth do not need to belong to 4-H to attend 4-H camp. Invite your friends and sign up now at https://4h.unl.edu/camps.

online.

This offer is on a first-come, first-served basis. The

Otoe County 4-H Foundation allocated $5,000 for 4-H

camps, so call to reserve your camp now!

Welcome! Please join us in welcoming Kelsey Ahrens as our Office Manager and Erin Steinhoff as the 4-H Extension Assistant. We are pleased that the County Extension Board and the Otoe County Commissioners voted for a 4-H extension assistant position, as we move forward bringing more extension programming to youth throughout Otoe County.

Online 4-H Enrollments

We need you to sign up! All youth and leaders enroll and re-enroll in 4-H for the 2019 program year through the web-based enrollment system at https://ne.4honline.com.

All 4-H enrollments are DUE online by 11:59 p.m.

Tuesday, May 1st. 4-H members have until June 15 to add or delete only non-livestock projects. No 4-H projects will be added after that time in accordance with the Nebraska State 4-H policy. At the Otoe County Fair, 4-H members may only enter exhibits in the 4-H projects in which they are enrolled.

Check out 4-H project ideas, receive help to enroll online and have your 4-H questions answered at these enrollments events: Monday, March 25, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Palmyra Memorial Library, 535 Illinois Place in Palmyra. Monday, April 1, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Kimmel Education & Research Center, 5985 G Road in Nebraska City. Monday, April 8, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Nebraska Extension in Otoe County Office, 620 1st Street in Syracuse.

4-H Diamond Clover Program The Nebraska 4-H Diamond Clover Program is designed to encourage 4-H youth to engage in a variety of projects and activities that will enable members to acquire the life skills necessary to lead successful lives as competent, caring, and contributing citizens. The program’s overall goal is to provide 4-H members a rich and diverse learning experience. Participation in the Diamond Clover program will enhance your 4-H experience, 4-H Career Portfolio, and your community! 4-H members of all ages can participate in the Diamond Clover program. 2019 4-H State Fair/AKSARBEN Animal Identification Requirements

2019 Animal Dates for Otoe County

May 10 - Horse ID’s & District Paper ID’s are due to the Extension Office.

May 18 - Market Lamb weigh-in will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the O.K. Pavilion. We will be tagging and weighing all market lambs for the Otoe County Fair. If you are going to the Nebraska State Fair and/or AKSARBEN, DNA samples can be pulled at this time.

June 15: Animal ID’s (ownership affidavits) due: this includes Breeding Beef, Feeder

Calves, Bucket Calves, Companion Animal, Dogs, Dairy & Meat Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, and Swine (ID forms can be found on the otoe.unl.edu website or picked up at the Extension Office).

All 4-H Exhibitors showing Beef, Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep or Swine are required to complete YQCA: Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (Quality Assurance) in order to exhibit their livestock - SEE ENCLOSED FLYER FOR DETAILS!

July 15 - All animal entries for Otoe County Fair are due. This includes: Beef, Companion Animals, Dogs, Dairy & Meat Goats, Horses, Meat Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep and Swine (entry sheets can be found on the otoe.unl.edu website or at the Extension Office). These entry sheets will also be used to stall livestock at the Otoe County Fair.
