The pocket hole joint uses screws to hold the two pieces of wood together. The key to the pocket

hole joint are the self-tapping washer-head screws. The threads go into the side grain of one piece

and the washer-head clamps the end grain of the other piece. Screws with Fine threads are for use

with hardwoods. Course threaded screws work with softwoods, MDF, plywood and particle board.

Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop has in stock the Kreg Jig K5 master system KR40006. This kit has

everything you need to join and build a small shelf or kitchen cabinets. The Kreg company, if you

didn't already know, has been in the pocket hole jig business for years. One of the main features of

their innovative Kreg Jig K5 is it allows clamping and drilling on the same side. This is helpful for

boards large and small. The K5 also features a swivel dust collection port for easy connection to any

standard vacuum hose. Also in the kit is a stepped drill bit, stop-collar, Kreg Automaxx Face clamp,

portable base for drilling on the go and storage wings for material support. With a little preparation,

you can glue and assemble an entire kitchen cabinet in minutes.

With plywood or any other manmade material, you can place your screws anywhere. Make sure you

give them equal spacing and come in at least 1" from the ends to start. With hardwood/softwoods

you always want to drill with the grain and screw into the side grain. This will insure you’re not try-

ing to possibly split or tear out the end grain. If you plan out your work, make sure that unsightly

pocket holes are hidden from view. If you make a mistake or have to show the pocket holes, you can

plug them with a line of plugs from Kreg. They are made specifically to slide into the pocket hole.

I spent 41 years in the electronics industry. The first 20 years I was a Broadcast

Engineer, building and maintaining radio stations in North Dakota, South Dakota,

Minnesota, and Kansas. For the last 21 years I worked in electronic manufacturing

working for Deere and Company in Fargo, ND and doing contract work for a small

electronic manufacturer in Raleigh. In 2011 my wife and I moved from Fargo, ND

to Durham, NC to be closer to our family. In the summer of 2014 I retired from

electronics, and concentrated on my woodworking. In December of 2014 I started

working part time for Klingspor Woodworking Shop in Raleigh.

I started woodworking in high school shop in 1968 and have been at ever since.

Although my main passions are wood turning and chip carving, but I also like to build

Arts and Crafts furniture. For many years I turned spindles for stair replacements.

In the early 90s I started turning bowls. At the present time I turn mostly utilitarian

items, but also like to turn artistic bowls. I sell my turnings on line, and in a couple of

galleries. I also teach woodturning at Klingspor Woodworking Shop in Raleigh. I am

a member of the American Association of Woodturners (POP), Woodturners Guild of

NC, NC Woodcarvers Association, Triangle Woodworkers Association, and the NC

Woodworkers Association. When not working at Klingspor, I spend a lot to time in the

shop, and of course as much time as I can spoiling my two granddaughters.

My wife and I make our home in Durham, NC. We have two grown children and

two granddaughters.
