Tuesday, October 1, 1991
Attended the Marrs meeting with Dave Murph. This meeting was held at U/T Arlington at the Swift Center. Dave had to leave early. The guest speaker was retired Dallas policeman Tom Tilson. Tilson is now 72 years old.
* * *
Tilson started talking about Tippit. He indicated he was a good friend of J.D., had the locker next to him, that J.D. had taken Tilson's area the day of the shooting and he was a pallbearer at Tippit's funeral. He knew all the other police i.e. McDonald, Nelson but didn't remember Maurry Jackson or Harry Olsen.
I started questioning him about the affair with Johnnie Maxie. He said he knew Tippit was running around with someone who worked at Austin's !M. He also claimed on the day of the shooting that the reason Tippit was on 10TH, was to stop off and see his girlfriend! "She had an apartment somewhere on the south side of 10TH. We all knew about it." He also stated he knew Tippit was "looking to get a divorce."
He offered that he and some of his fellow officers thought it was his girlfriend's husband who really shot J.D. "I knew he (the husband) was always chasing them around. Course after the funeral people started sending money into the Tippit's. Little schoolkids sent in nickels and dimes. The department had their killer and squashed the divorce rumors. Tippit's family got a million dollars." I suppose $643,000 would seem like a milliom when the family got the funds in October of 1964.
Johnnie Maxie Witherspoon was interviewed by the House Select
Committee on September 24, 1977.

Mr. Jim Garrison District Attorney Few Orleans, La.
Dear Sir: L.
After seeing you on the Johnny Carson, I have
done a little "soul searching" and should like
to pass along some information which may or may
'not be helpful to you. I shall tell you as much
as I know for whatever it is worth.
Quite by accident I was told that Officer Tippets
had gotten a married woman pregnant. Thi rn •
small blonde waitress who worl:ed at Auvin's Barbecue
Drive-In illinois 2nd Streets. This_aoman
at that time lived with her nusohhd and several children
5T1.622 kiguntain-ra76-Road. her mother-in-law lived
7,571.- Itneicu y was told by the mother-
in-law at the beauty shop she patronized. She had
talked of her son and this women getting a divorce.
The house was put on the sale market and the reason
given for selling was that they were separating. The
house sold and I do not know where they moved. My
source of information also said that when Officer T.
. was killed the couple did not divorCe.
:A shOrt time ago I was talking to a friend across town
and related this story to her. She asked me if the
blonde's name was Ruby. This I do not know. _alio told
' : me of a friend telling her the star): that on 't12^magninz
-07_ficerTineetswaslalledandthedav of the assassination,
IirsTiopetsna wite.rieighbor and was crying 6EFF6se •
on what morning officer Tiryoets had told her wpntqp,.a
divorce to mhrr.t, someone else. She thought the oomph's
name was Ruby.
I'm ,sorry I do not remember the names of the couple. I
do know they purchased the house from a printer named
. W. W. Rhea.
.. Although this it gossip, the two stories pieced together
makes enough sense to me to believe thht someone other
than Oswald had a good reason for wanttng Officer T. dead.
Tippets made the barbecue place a hangout, I understand,
because he lived nearby.
Keep up the good work and forgive me for not signing my
name. If I could help further, I would.
A friend.
