Notes from the Head of School

I would like to give everyone an update on changes in the UNIS Hanoi Business Office and to welcome a new Director of Finance to our leadership team. For both new and returning families this news may be quite sudden and so I would like to take a few moments to set the context. Sadly the school was attacked last year by an anonymous and malicious email making unsubstantiated allegations about our business office. As a not-for-profit organization operating under the auspices of the United Nations, such an attack could not go uninvestigated. An independent team from KPMG was hired to do a third party review. They worked with us for several weeks to thoroughly examine our practices and key documentation, during which time our Director of Finance was placed on paid leave. While we have received advice as to how we might improve some procedures and documentation, there was no evidence whatsoever to indicate any corruption or malfeasance. A summary of the KPMG third party review was published on the UNIS Hanoi Portal on 14 June 2012 and can be found here. Subsequent to the receipt of that report, we have been busy implementing an action plan which was approved by the Board to address items raised by the review. Also subsequent to the receipt of the report, our Director of Finance, Dave King, regretfully resigned on 31 July in order to pursue new opportunities. Before he left, he worked hard during the summer vacation to ensure that the school would be ready for transition to new leadership and we are grateful for his continued excellent hard work during a very difficult period for him and the school. Dave faithfully served UNIS Hanoi for the past five years, overseeing significant enrollment growth and successfully expanding the business office to serve the growing fiscal needs of the school. We will miss him, but wish him well in his new position. During the summer we started a search process for a new Director of Finance, and assembled a task force made up of members of the Board of Directors, its Finance Committee and school administrators to screen the many high quality applications received. The two short-listed candidates were brought to campus in mid August for two full days of interviews with me, other members of the administration, the business office staff, the search task force as well as a group of parents. Additionally, the candidates made presentations on the theme of “Financial Management in a Not-For-Profit Environment: How to maximize revenues, and secure cost efficiencies, long term viability, and fiscal stability of the organization.” I am pleased to announce that Mr. Len Archer has accepted our offer to serve as the new Director of Finance. He will join the UNIS Hanoi community on 24 September. Len is originally from Canada and began his career as a certified senior accountant and comptroller in the corporate world. He then joined the public sector where he worked as the Chief Financial Officer in three different school districts in British Columbia. He made the move to Hong Kong 8 years ago where he has had a successful tenure at the Canadian International School, which has 1800 students, as the Director of Business Administration. Len will be accompanied to Hanoi by his wife Louise, an Elementary School teacher. This concludes our hiring for the 2012-2013 school year and we are excited to be starting the year with a strong and

motivated team in place.

Respectfully,

Dr. Chip Barder, Head of School

Dear Parents, It was a great pleasure to see so many of you at our ES Back to School Nights this week – and I appreciate that many of you needed to be there for more than one evening, having children in several grade levels. I hope you found it informative and helpful in terms of us building our partnership with you. I would welcome feedback from parents regarding the event, especially as we used a new format this year with the introductory talk for everyone, followed by meeting the specialists in the foyer and then moving to Grade Level and Homeroom presentations. I was asked by several parents for reading references to follow up. One of the books I referred to was “Mindset – The New Psychology of Success” by Carol S. Dweck (Ballantine Books/ Random House, 2008) which is also available as an iBook. The Learning Orientation/ Performance Orientation

slide I showed was drawn from a book entitled “The

Intelligent School” by Barbara MacGilchrist, Jane Reed

and Kate Myers (Sage Publications Ltd, 2004). I have

included a copy here for your reference.

I really do look forward to working in partnership with

all of you and hope to see as many as of you as possible

at the upcoming events advertised during the Back to

School Nights, which are all on the School Calendar.

Kind regards, Carole Denny, Elementary School Principal [email protected]

Notes from the Elementary School Principal

Notes from the Middle/High School Principal

Dear MS/HS Families, I would like to thank everyone who attended the MS/HS Back to School Parent’s Night. From all accounts it was an extremely positive event filled with good will and enthusiasm for learning. Please realize that parent involvement in the educational process is extremely important. Current research is clear; parents play a major role in the educational achievement of their children. But contrary to what many parents may believe, research indicates that appropriate levels of involvement (encouraging, monitoring, setting high expectations, displaying genuine interest, etc.) produce far better results than when parents are overly involved (punishing, arguing, extreme rigidity, etc.). It has been shown that well intentioned over involved parents who hover over their child’s every move actually hinder progress rather than promote success. I encourage all parents to become or remain active in the lives of their children throughout MS/HS, but within reason. By all means set high expectations, talk about school over the dinner table, ask if homework has been completed and encourage children to work hard, but try to avoid the overbearing approach. When parents create a supportive atmosphere children build independence and a sense of responsibility. Upcoming opportunities for parent involvement at UNIS Hanoi:

1. Sept. 5: “Get involved with your child’s school” program. Two sessions: 8:30 am & 6:00 pm. (See p.8) 2. Sept. 26: MS/HS Parents Forum with the Principal. 8:30 am. 3. Oct. 2/3: 3-Way Conferences (Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences). More information to follow.

Warm regards,

Pete Kennedy, Secondary School Principal [email protected]

Notes from the PYP Coordinator

The Quest for Deeper Questions The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is the curriculum framework which guides the teaching and learning at UNIS elementary School. One of the key aspects of the PYP is its commitment to inquiry-based learning. Inquiry is promoted by modern education systems all over the world these days: it is simply good teaching practice. To explain inquiry-based learning in full would take more than this short article will allow, however one aspect of the approach is to encourage children to think more deeply, more often. This Wednesday we held a workshop for teaching assistants which addressed just that. The focus of the session was teacher questioning and the affect it has on children’s thinking. Here are two simple strategies from the workshop which you can practice with your child at home in your mother tongue:

Ask Open-Ended Questions: When you are reading with your child, discussing their school work or perhaps visiting a local place of interest together, rather than asking only questions which can be answered with one word (e.g. yes or no), choose instead some open-ended questions. Questions which require an opinion rather than one correct answer are examples of these. E.g. ‘What do you think might happen in this story? Why?’ Such questioning tends to deepen thinking. Delve Deeper Once your child has answered your question, don’t always stop there - dig a little deeper into his or her thinking. Simple phrases such as asking ‘Anything else?’ or ‘What makes you say that?’ once your child has given his or her initial response encourage the child to dig a little deeper in their thinking.

Of course it is very important that such questioning is fun and seems natural between parent and child. Using these strategies sometimes rather than always is a good rule of thumb to follow. After all, questioning your child should not feel like being in an interview. If you have any questions for me about the elementary curriculum at UNIS Hanoi please don’t hesitate to contact me. Christopher Frost, PYP Coordinator [email protected]

MAP Testing Information

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test September 11th -19th for Grade 3-8 Students At UNIS Hanoi standardised testing is one method of gathering information to promote and inform student learning. A standardised test should allow students, teachers and parents to identify a student's strengths and areas of need in the different subject areas that are tested. At the school-wide level the standardised test can help to identify areas of the curriculum that may need adapting. It will also help the school to determine how UNIS students are performing in comparison to other students around the world and evaluate the effectiveness of our program. Students in grades 3-8 will be completing the MAP test during the window of September 11th -20th, 2012. These are computerized tests in reading, language usage, and math which are called Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP). The results of the assessment are focused on growth and will be used by classroom teachers to better understand individual student achievement and future steps for learning. MAP tests are unique - as students complete the test it adapts to be appropriate for their level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. Please be aware that there is no additional preparation that students can do to prepare for these tests. It is helpful for students to have a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast prior to testing. If your child is anxious you can help to alleviate their worries by talking, listening and reassuring. Encourage your child to simply do their best as he or she would do with any school assignment, test or project. Contact the homeroom teacher if you have a concern regarding your child’s reaction to the test. If you would like more information about the MAP test in general please contact Meagan Enticknap-Smith, the Director of Learning at [email protected].

There are many opportunities to get involved at UNIS Hanoi as a parent volunteer: Class Parent, Library, School Store, Spring Fair, Birthday events, Board of Directors. And for most positions no experience is required and all our volunteers are supported and celebrated! Please come and find out more at two sessions this week designed to showcase the ways you can volunteer and contribute to our school community. There will be detailed information available and the chance to meet other parents who want to get involved, make new friends and have some fun!

UNIS Hanoi Music Academy News

UNIS Music Academy lessons will commence on Tuesday September 4 in the Centre for the Arts. Music Academy lessons follow the schedule of ASA’s so bus students can be accommodated. There are over 200 UNIS students enrolled in music lessons so far this school year. Elementary students will be collected from their classes for the first 2 weeks of lessons to assist with the transition to their music room.

A waiting area is set up in the Centre for the Arts foyer for students and parents to wait. Parents who have registered for UMA lessons for Semester 1 will receive an invoice next month which will need to be paid in full at the conclusion of one month after receiving the invoice. Financial credit will not be given for missed lessons. Students will be given the opportunity to make up for missed lessons at another time during the semester or in the week at the end of the semester. A “Missed Lesson” is defined by informing Ms Cham via email that the student will not be able to attend the lesson, no later than 8:00am on the day of the lesson if the lesson occurs on a weekday. If the scheduled lesson is on Saturday morning an email of cancellation will need to be sent to Ms Cham on the Friday afternoon before 4:00pm. It is only during these circumstances that students will be able to have make-up lessons. Please contact Ms Cham ([email protected]) or Liz Druitt ([email protected]) for lesson registration or questions.

PE and House T-Shirts - Let the sales begins!

The new SCO store will be open for business from Tuesday morning at 8:00 am (please check hours below) for the sale of SCO Boutique items as well as a range of PE shirts, House and Phoenix shirts. We must again apologize for the continued absence of extra small items for the younger students but we do not want to wait any longer for the opening of the store. Please follow the crowds to the Sports Centre where you will find the store manned by SCO volunteers keen and eager to serve you. We hope the store will become a focal point for all sale items and we shall carry adverts for our items in coming editions of Tin Tuc – Watch this space!
