Defending champion Roger Federer cruised into the last 16 at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Monday

(12th March) following a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over Croatian Ivan Dodig.

    SCRIPTING INFORMATION:

The third round in the men's draw at Indian Wells continued on Monday with the in-form number 10 seed Richard

Gasquet of France taking on Poland's Jerzy Janowicz.

Janowicz came into the match with a little form of his own, having already won seven times at ATP level this year.

However, Gasquet never allowed the Pole to settle and a straightforward 6-1, 6-4 was completed with minimum fuss.

Gasquet, who already has two titles to his name in 2013, next faces Tomas Berdych, the number six seed.

The Frenchman will fancy his chances - Gasquet has beaten Berdych in four of their six career meetings, including

    the last two.

Defending champion Roger Federer was the highest seed on view in Monday's action and he also had little trouble in

getting past Ivan Dodig of Croatia.

It was all wrapped up in just 61 minutes.

Federer played exhibition tennis at times, which Dodig could only stand back and admire.

A double fault brought the action to a tame conclusion and Federer suffered a minor back problem towards the end of

the match, but a 6-3, 6-1 win was duly closed out.

Federer will next meet compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat Australian veteran Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 7-5.

After that, it could be Nadal for the defending champion.

    Phelps

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the Laureus awards ceremony, Michael Phelps took time to visit a sports complex for

children in the Rocinha shanty town this Monday (March 11th).

Phelps won four gold and two silver medals in London taking his career total to 22, and in the process, became the

most decorated Olympian of all time with 18 gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

He is now retired and found the time to swim with some children at the newly inaugurated pool at the Complexo

    Esportivo da Rocinha.

"Being able to put a smile on someone's face, it's the greatest feeling in the world," said after the session with the

    local children.

The sports centre caters for 4,500 people with 17 different sports and also offers health and social services to the

residents of what was once South America's largest slum.

Phelps, who is one of the contenders for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award, said he is definitely finished with

    competition.

"It's been a great career and I've been able to look back and everything that I've been able to accomplish and I can

actually say I've done everything I have ever wanted to," he said.
