Section Elevation: Bird Blind

This intent of this studio project was to improve the bird watching experience for the visitor to Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology. Sapsucker Woods is the setting for the world renowned research facility. An existing path leads visitors around the wooded grounds. The multiple habitat types allow a diverse range of avian life. The aim of the project was to improve the natu-ral habitat without excluding humans.

The plan envisions a constructed wetland to improve water quality and allow opportunities for visitors to observe the varied birdlife. A bridge across the spillway provides the best viewing of the wetlands. Simple water quality improvement methods are used to reduce silt in the water and to prevent further ero-sion.

The birdblind constructed of reclaimed wood allows the visitor to get up close to the water loving birdlife. The physical form of the birdblind was inspired by the form of the viewing window wall in the main building.

Master Plan

The Caroline Elementary Wilderness Campus project began as a desire by teach-ers to be able to teach students about the outdoors, outdoors. Retired educator Janemoon Clark reached out to me as part of her effort to take that idea and communicate it to the Caroline community in order to gain support for its realiza-tion.

The four guiding design principles were relevance to curriculum, safety, cost and accessibility. By including teachers in the design process we could ensure that this initiative would not be an additional burden but rather an asset and impor-tant teaching tool. Because the District would not be able to budget money for either construction or maintenance funding was secured through a variety of grants. Volunteers did as much of the work as possible. It was important that the trail surface be ADA compliant in order that no students would be denied access to the ‘Wilderness’ experience. These four principles guided each step througout the process and helped us maintain awareness of our goal.

Together, we worked to develop this idea into a viable project. We worked with the Districts’ Attorney, Facilities Manager and School Principal and Board to gain the necessary approvals. Once we had the approvals, I produced a master plan that adhered to the guiding principles. The master plan was then used to re-cruit volunteers for work days that brought the community out to clear brush and leaves in preparation for the trails and classroom areas. At that point the district was able to volunteer equipment to haul in over 200 yards of agregate materials.

Today, the Wilderness Trail remains a work in process. A solid base of gravel topped with stonedust allows full access into a beautiful on-campus natural area and learning environment. The teachers, parents and students continue to work to build this asset to thier community.

An underused town park at the base of a spectacular gorge is the set-ting of this studio project. The park is currently no more than a patch of lawn and some shrubs on a triangular lot. The goal of the design was to utilize forms and materials of the Regions’ iconic gorges to cre-ate a sense of place in an otherwise awkward lot. An ‘L’ shaped bench constructed of local quarry block gives a sense of enclosure while direct-ing the viewer toward the focal point of the waterfall. Reclaimed small stone block from an existing wall retains a planted berm that screens the nearby residences. A raised planted berm behind the quarry block bench seperates a bus stop from the core of the park. The new ‘T’ shaped bridge gives an unobstructed view of the falls while providing access to both sides of the gorge. As the visitor proceeds up the gorge the boulder placements and plant groupings become more naturalistic. This allows the space to be comfortable for users as well as being able to withstand the considerable forces of high seasonal stream flows.

Kemble Park was a group project for my third-year studio. When the Kemble School was demolished ten years ago the Corn Hill neighbor-hood was promised a park would be built in its place. After years of broken promises the neighborhood is working to realize their park.

After researching the site, surrounding neighborhoods, area history, and other aspects of planning we held several public community meet-ings in order to design a park that would meet the community’s needs.

A multi-use athletic field would adjoin the existing basketball courts. A natural playscape would meet the needs of the neighborhood’s youngest members while others can enjoy the many planted green spaces. A central park pavillion inspired by the form of a corn crib pro-vides a gathering spot and reflects the sites agricultural history.

Current Detroit Land Use Policy Proposed Detroit Land Use Policy

This project investigated the issue of urban depopulation in American post-industrial cities, specifically the Detroit Metropolitan Area. Population decline presents cities with side effects that are almost entirely negative. There are, however, opportunities for the implementation of unique land use changes that I wanted to explore.

Detroit is currently moving ahead with a policy of re-moving city services from a large segment of its urban area. The usual explanation of the future of these areas is that they will return to nature. I’ve explored various methods of utilizing this land space for productive use. Some of the possible uses include constructed wetland, habitat corridors and a block design that allows for green infrastructure as well as future development.

Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park was an opportunity for me to explore the design of a dynamic urban park in a complex site that partially straddled a pier. The design called for a segment of park that could have its own unique design character but also work in relation to the greater Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The parameters of the assignment required that a significant portion of this park section would be utilized for field athletics. I chose to fit the rectangular forms of the athletic fields into the larger rectangle of the pier leaving much of the on-land space for a sloping naturalized hillside and a central plaza. Much of the focus of this project was on material re-use. The concrete from sections of the pier, steel i-beams from the partially demolished buildings and the existing large sections of wood were all investigated to determine an appropriate adaptive use.

Liberty Square was a multi-semester planning project designed to allow the City of Binghamton Planning Depart-ment gain a greater understanding of a particular under-served neighborhood in Binghamton’s North Side. The project was undertaken by a group in the student run service organization DesignConnect. The group began with a thorough physical inventory of house vacancies, condition of streetscape and treecover. Interviews with residents helped to further the understanding of percieved neighborhood boundaries, connectivity issues and desired outcomes.

Appropriate lots were identified as possible permanent open space for the neighborhood. The group worked with the residents, local businesses and other stakeholders in organized design charrettes to put their ideas to paper. The design deliverables provided the community with a well-researched and thought out master plan that will be utilized to obtain funding for the future Mosaic Park.

BUFFER PLANTING

This studio project allowed students to explore the design of a highly personalized space within the confines of a pre-deter-mined site. I chose to design a landscape for a WeeHouse, a line of prefabricated homes designed and built by Alchemy Architects. The two small structures sited perpendiuclar to one at the top of the site along with the retaining wall of a walled orchard form an enclosed courtyard that expands the living space of this seasonal home. The centerpiece of this dynamic living space is a stone fireplace with a contemporary pergola. Steps lead down from this level to first, a herb and flower garden and then finally, to the lower garden level. A stream enters the site at a constructed water feature in the orchard before passing through the property. This design imagines a home where the delineation between indoor and outdoors is allowed to be more fluid and flexible depending on programing, users and personal preference. The layout allows the home to be more compact and efficient in winter while expanding during the warmer months.

The challenge of this project was to connect a traditional custom home to its wooded site. Dryset stone walls were employed to extend the rectalinear form of the house outward firmly grounding the home. The planting; more formal at the house, elegantly transitions into the more naturalistic masses of woodland shrubs and perennials. Walls, hedges and other ele-ments serve to define various use areas in the landscape. The flagstone patio and rear plant-ings were constructed with the future pool in mind. Deer resistant plants allow the founda-tion planing to soften the vertical walls of the house and keep it grounded.

The historic Garten Residence was once home to the son of President Ulysses Grant. The sheer immensity of the stone home made it a design challenge. Rather than try to outdo the grandness of the home, the planting works to subtly con-nect the building to the site. A classic plant pallette of erica-ceous evergreens and groundcover gave the new planting an immediate grandeur. The walled garden has its own unique scale and personality.
