Could you find a different place to read each day – e.g. on the trampoline with a blanket and cushion, in a den, in a different room each day? Maybe take a photo of your reading spots and send them in so we can see!

Read your favourite story together. Create a story board on a blank piece of paper to show what happened at the beginning, middle and end. Children could draw pictures to sequence the story and then write a little explanation underneath.

Act it out! Read a story together and then have a go at acting it out using dress up clothes or homemade props!

You could even create some of the main characters out of play doh and then write a description about them using some interesting adjectives! Year 1 should have full stops and capital letters in every sentence.

Please practise reading real and alien words (can be found on twinkl) and read with your child EVERY day.

This week focus on reading words with ay/a-e/ai sound

Writing Using suffix (word endings) er and est

Watch your favourite ‘U’ rated film and write a story about it. Focus on adjectives to describe the setting – (it was darker than the night, it was the scariest forest they had ever seen). Don’t forget neat cursive handwriting and capital letters and full stops.

Create a scene from your favourite film or story book using things at home – duplo, playdough, playmobil, household objects like blankets, cushions, kitchen items (or even food!) and then write a description of it using lots of ‘er’ and ‘est’ words – the trees were taller than giants, the clouds were fluffier than cotton wool, it was the strangest land they could imagine

Read a story and write a description of your favourite character. E.g. The witch was meaner than an angry pixie, he was stronger than an elephant

Describe some people in your house using ‘er’ and ‘est’ - I am smarter than my brother! My brother is sneakier than a wolf.

www.purplemash.co.uk Use your school log in to access the resources. You will have received a reminder of log in details on Thursday. www.twinkl.co.uk (This website is providing parents and carers unlimited access to resources using the code ‘UKTWINKLCARES’.) www.literacyshedplus.com Access to lovely video resources which might inspire story writing.

Use www.twinkl.co.uk for inspiration!

Sound mats to help children with writing!

Lolly sticks are useful to help with finger spaces too!

Handwriting Write out the alphabet in capital letters.

Write some of your favourite place names ensuring they all have a capital letter which is bigger than the other letters and doesn’t join. E.g. street name, Wroughton, Disneyland, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Freedog

Ensure children are starting on the line, forming the letter correctly and making them taller than other letters.

Ensure children are starting on the line, forming the letter correctly and making the letter sit below the line.

Write some funny sentences for your child to copy into their neatest cursive handwriting remembering their capital letters. This way they don’t have to think about content and they only have to concentrate on their handwriting.

www.twinkl.co.uk (This website is providing parents and carers unlimited access to resources using the code ‘UKTWINKLCARES’.) Search for cursive handwriting and you will find lots of sheets and even videos showing you how to correctly form the letters.

Spelling Access the Year 1 Common Exception Words on www.twinkl.co.uk : you could focus on these 5 this week: they said went some there

This week focus on spelling patterns using ay/a-e/ai sound

Choose a few words that your child finds tricky and have a go at ‘look, say, cover, write, check’ on a blank piece of paper.

Have a go at some ‘rainbow writing’ using colouring pens or crayons to write the tricky words several times.

Can you use one of the words you practised and put it in a sentence?

Have a little spelling test at the ending of the week on the words you’ve been practising. How many did you remember?

www.twinkl.co.uk (This website is providing parents and carers unlimited access to resources using the code ‘UKTWINKLCARES’.) Search for Year 1 spellings, year 1 common exception words and Year 1 dictation sheets www.purplemash.co.uk Use your school log in to access the resources.

Can you practise writing lists of ay/ a-e/ ai words and put some into a sentence – which spelling pattern can you find the most words for? You could draw pictures of some of these things and write the correct spelling label to go with it

Access spelling resources and dictation sheets.

Maths Daily quick maths ideas:

Asking the children what is one more or less than a number

Counting aloud in 2s, 5s or 10s

Counting aloud forwards and backwards to 30 starting on different numbers

Give the children an empty box problem to work out – e.g. ___ + ____ = 12

Place value

Practise place value – can you make some tens frames – making grid of 10 drawing 10 dots to make

some tens? Then make some grids with 1-9 dots.

Now make a number: E.g. If I have 4 tens and 2 more I have 42.

Make your own diennes cutting out strips of paper for tens and small squares for ones to help you

build numbers

Now make a number! E.g. If I’ve got 3 tens and 4 1s I have got 34.

Give the children 10 numbers to make – you could write the number for them to make or make the number and

they have to work it out by counting the tens and ones and write it.

www.twinkl.co.uk (This website is providing parents and carers unlimited access to resources using the code ‘UKTWINKLCARES’.) www.purplemash.co.uk Use your school log in to access the resources.

Page 10: Timetable and Activity Suggestions Week 2 Year 1 Parents ...€¦ · Timetable and Activity Suggestions Week 2 Year 1 Parents and Carers We want to help parents by giving you a suggestion

Practise adding 0-9 to your number – you might like to print out a number line or hundred square to help with

this or make your own! You could roll a dice to see what to add e.g. 42 + 6 =.

As you go for a walk or even looking around the house, tell your grown ups how many tens

and ones are in the numbers you see out and about (house numbers, road signs, numbers on

lamposts, drains, signs) - what is one more, one less than that number?

Mindfulness Take time to be mindful...

Enjoy some of the gonoodle exercises www.gonoodle.co.uk or find them on youtube.

Mindfulness colouring: there are lots on google or twinkl or you could just find a positive slogon, write it and decorate the

page with your own drawings, patterns...

Get some fresh air: enjoy walking and enjoying the spring sunshine

Chat! Chat about what has made you happy today, anything you are worried about and things that you are thankful for..

If you can chat to friends and family on the phone or via facetime it will cheer them up as well as you!

Below is a list of suggested educational ideas and activities to use if you’d like to;

PE- Join in with Joe Wicks PE every morning at 9-9.30 - get fit and wake up your brains together!

Art- create spring collages and paint pictures of what you find on a spring walk.

History- Create some fact files on what you remember about different dinosaurs!

Computing- go on a walk to the local park and create an ‘algorithm’ for your family to follow. You must write a list of instructions, for example ‘how to get to the

slide’ using positional language such as ‘walk forward 3 steps, turn right and walk 2 steps, turn left and walk 5 steps’

Science – Can you identify changes in the seasons? How is the world around us changing? Write some sentences describing what you have noticed.

PSHE – healthy food – can you make something healthy and tasty for you and your family to eat? Can you make a poster to remind people to eat healthy food?
