This season brings CoachJimmy Shaver closer to atotal of 40 years coaching, ifhe hasn’t hit the markalready. The head man for the

Barbe High School Buccaneers said “I amgoing to coach ‘til I don’t like it anymore,”and added “I don’t think there will ever be atime when I don’t like football. I love foot-ball.”

Shaver is very optimistic about this falland feels verygood about theBucs chances

going into the season, as well he should. The Buccaneers have only two returningplayers on offense and two defensively, butaccording to Shaver they have really goodskilled people.

Two of them are the two returning offen-sively, Ernest Celestie and Eric Cutrera. Both of these players are All-District stand-outs from last year. Cutrera was and will bereturning in the quarterback position.Celestie will again be in the backfield asone of the state’s premier running backs.Noteworthy is the fact that Celestie hascommitted to Texas Tech.

Offensively, Barbe will still run thespread. Shaver stated, “What we are work-ing hard on is the offensive line and devel-oping a good passing attack. With Eric’sthrowing ability, if we can do that and turnErnest loose running the ball then we willbe in good shape.”

Look for the Bucs to use some specialskilled people offensively. One issue thatthe team will have to deal with is depth. While they have some very good skilledpeople, the Bucs are a little thin in areas.

Defensively, the Bucs should look goodwith Cade Daughenbaugh and Eric Papion

returning. They are the only two starters com-ing back. However, the Bucs have All-Statetransfer Janzen Jackson who will be in thedefensive secondary. Jackson is a true blue-chipper who has committed to LSU and is alsolisted in Rivals top 100, (a Web-based nation-wide listing of the top college prospects aroundthe country).

Shaver said, “I think the secondary is reallygood. Having secondary guys helping to makeplays and preventing big third down plays is akey.” Shaver went on to say that he feels itgives you a much better chance to win whenthis happens.

Junior Logan Chapman got quite a bit of playtime last year and will be alongsideDaughenbaugh in the linebacker position. TheBucs will show a “nickel” defense quite a bitthis season and will present an eight man frontwhen needed. The level of talent in the second-ary gives the team many options.

When asked what the key to winning districtwould be Shaver said, “We have to win theclose games and finish the job.”

Shaver stated, “ I can’t wait until about thesixth game when everybody knows what to do.I like the competition and watching an athletedo something good with what you have taught

The Sulphur Golden Torswill be back at it this fall withPaul Bourgeois in the lead. The Tors finished last seasonwith an eight and three record,

but had four wins and no losses in district. When you can go undefeated in district 3-5A,your season was a good one.

This year, the team will have someturnover and will need to fill some holes onboth sides of the ball. Bourgeois says it isgoing to be a rebuilding year and with onlyseven starters returning, they have a lot ofpositions to fill.

The offense will havethree starters comingback. Manny Busch is a6’3”, 218 lbs. senior attight end. Senior DylanStitzlein will be back atthe wide receiver spot.

Stitzlein is 6’4”,weighing 200 lbs. and

was one of Sulphur's leading receivers lastseason. The stand-out pulled in 10 receptionsfor 193 yards.

The last returning starter for the Toroffense is senior Drew Verrett. He checks inat 6’1”, 270 lbs. and will be the only linemancoming back for Sulphur. All three of thesestarters are being recruited.

Defensively, the Tornados only have fourreturning and all are in the secondary. Twodefensive backs are returning, seniors NickTramonte and Justin Dowers.

Tramonte is 5’11”, 180 lbs., and Dowers is5’10”, 185 lbs. Tramonte had two intercep-

tions last year with one returned for a touch-down.

Sulphur has two linebackers returning, sen-iors Keith Lemelle at 6’1”, 237 lbs. and TahjJones. Tahj is 6’3”, and 265 lbs., and was All-District, All-Southwest, and All-State at thelinebacker spot. Tahj is another player that isbeing recruited by several colleges.

Offensively Sulphur runs the Pro “I” andthe shotgun with one back. Currently there isa battle to see who will be the signal callerfor the Tors this season.

Offensively, Bourgeois stated, “It lookslike we are going to have to depend on put-

ting the ball in the air a little bit more.” Theoffense is not set at this point and according toBourgeois, every position is open except forthree or four.

The front four of the defense has sufferedsome setbacks with injuries and other problems. Those things have made it difficult for Sulphur tofind players with playtime and maturity to put upfront. The inexperience will make things toughearly, leaving Sulphur with a big task to get up tospeed before district play.

Bourgeois was upbeat about the team as awhole.

“I like this group a lot, they have done every-

thing we have asked of them at this point. Theyhave a great attitude and that's half the battle,” hesaid.

One of the key games for Sulphur will be theWestgate game in week five. Westgate knockedSulphur out of the playoffs in the first round lastyear. They will host Westgate for their home-coming game. Bourgeois says this is a goodgame in the middle to help get his team ready forthe last half of the season.

He feels that if the team can come out of thefirst half of the year in the win column, get somethings going their way and have a little luck, theywill be competitive in district.

Coach Eric Parmley will kick off his thirdyear at the helm of the DeRidder HighSchool Dragon football team. The head manfor the Dragons came into his first year twoweeks before that first season, a winless sea-son that ended with an 0-10 mark. Last yearsaw marked improvement as the Dragonsended up 4-6 for the year, with the teamshowing great potential for the future. “Theteam played well last season but had somestumbling blocks mentally,” Parmley said.

“Things take awhile to work outunder a new sys-

tem.” Parmley added that he doesn’t expectthat to happen this season with a team that ismore focused.

The Dragons will be running the “I”offense this season and have one returning inthe backfield at fullback. There are onlythree starters returning on DeRidder'soffense. In the backfield will also be juniorrunning back Steven Richmond. The tail-back has 4.6-4.7 speed and coach said“What he lacks in size, he makes up for withhis running.” He added “He runs bigger thanhe is.”

Sam Peterson will lead the 2008 squad at

quarterback. At over 6’ tall and with prettygood speed, Peterson should contribute onthe ground as well as the air this season.Look for the Dragons to be a little “oldschool and run the football,” according toParmley.

The major strength for the Dragons willbe their defense. The team will be running afour-two-five anchored by two-year starterRonald Acker. Acker has 4.5 speed andexperience, something that should not betaken lightly by opposing teams. “Our teamhas six returning on defense and we are for-tunate the other players filling the gaps all

have play time from last year,” Parmley said.“Defense, solid defense, is my goal and has beensince I came to DeRidder,” Parmley said. “Wehave a good bit of speed and will use that speedto implement gang tackling.”

The one monkey on the team's back is thetwelve consecutive losses to Leesville. Eventhough Leesville is not in DeRidder's Districtnow, they were at one time. This has been a longrunning rivalry and the winner takes home theHooper Trophy. This trophy was donated yearsago to promote play between these two schools. It's been a source of pride to bring the trophyhome for generations of Dragons. The fact that

Leesville has two of the states premier runningbacks may still make winning the trophy forDeRidder difficult.

Look for the loss of the Hooper to to changeas Parmley continues to assert his will on theteam. Parmley concluded, “I’m excited about theup and coming season and feel that the key towinning district is to stay healthy.” With teamspeed, a solid running game, a commitment todefense and good health, the Dragons shouldindeed look to be a top contender in Districtfour-four A. The team’s chemistry is comingtogether. They should be contenders this comingseason—making things interesting in a district

LaGrange High Schoolwelcomes a new Gator totown this fall. CoachJules Sullen comes fromPeabody High School and

takes over the football program atLaGrange. Sullen says he will have his teammore disciplined, fundamentally sound andbigger, faster, and stronger. “The team par-ticipated in the seven on seven competitionsthis summer and did well,” Sullen said.

Seven on sevenis competition forfootball skill

positions, quarterbacks, receivers, runningbacks and defensive secondary personnel. One team’s skill players take on anotherteam’s skill players. These competitions areheld in various locations around the stateduring summer months.

“Offensively, we are looking at what typeof personnel we have and that will deter-mine the exact type of offense we are goingto run,” Sullen said. He has a lot of skilledplayers this year and he feels they will bebetter than some think.

According to Sullen, LaGrange will run amultiple offense and will have quite a few

different looks. With good people in skilledpositions, look for the Gators to have amore wide open offense. "I'm not sure whatthe ratio will be in run versus pass at thispoint. We'll just take whatever is given," hesaid.

The defense will be the 4-2-5, and theteam will field some of their greatest talentson that side of the ball. Sullen said, “We aretrying to put our strength in our defense andspecial teams.” He has taken some of hisstarters from offense and put them startingdefensively.

Some of the skill players Sullen mentions

Junior Brandon Williams will be in the sec-ondary at the weak side safety. “He will doextremely well for us,” Sullen said. SeniorParish Roberts is a three-year starter and will beback at the free safety spot for the Gators.Anchoring the defense on the line at end is sen-

ior and two-year starter Kaylon Roberts.Sullen said, “When people see us they will be

extremely impressed with what we do.”LaGrange will be tested early. The Gators

have a tough schedule and will play Barbe fortheir opener at the Bucs. Sullen says it will givethem a chance to see where they are. He is hop-ing that his team can stay healthy and getthrough the pre-district schedule okay. If theydo that and are able to “gel” as a team by then,Sullen believes they will be competing for thedistrict title.

The Sam HoustonBroncos will be back thisseason to mix it up in dis-trict 4-4A, and Coach RussSutherland has some top tal-

Zach Morganwill be at the right

tackle spot this season which is a slight changefrom last year where he played at right guard. Theposition change will not be a problem accordingto Sutherland, who said he is capable of playingall of them. Zach was honorable mention All-State and first team All-District last season andhas committed to Tulane.

Returning Senior Marshall Paris was secondteam All-District last season and he will be in the

middle of the line snapping the ball. Both of thelinemen have size with Marshall at 6’3”, 260 lbs.,and Zach also 6’3” weighing in at 290 lbs.Sutherland likes both players and thinks they'llhave a great season.

best, if not the best lineman, in Southwest Louisiana. The offense will have Skylar Barrentine at wide

He is a three-year starterthat went down with a torn ACL in week eight of lastseason. He will be back at full speed and should helpin the middle of the field from his linebacker position.

The Broncos will have Orlan Lockhart as their sig-nal caller on the field and the 6’2”, 195lbs. junior doeshave an arm. Look for the Broncos to be able to throw

the ball again this year. One pitfall for Sutherland early is the absence of

Evan Powell to start the season. Powell is 5’9” and185lbs. and in his sophomore year. He will be startingfor the Broncos at linebacker, but will miss the jam-boree and the first two games of the season.

Powell will be with the Junior National OlympicBaseball team at the Pan Am Games. Sutherland said,“I think it’s just a great honor for him; it’s just greatfor him to be selected for this.” Sutherland boastedthat Evan is a solid player and an unbelievable talent.

The Broncos will play some top talent early, posi-tioning themselves to post “W’s” on the board.Something Sutherland would like to see. The first fivegames for the team puts them against St. Louis,Leesville, Westlake, Barbe and the Jennings Bulldogs. From the beginning, their task will not be an easy one. However, if Sam Houston can make it through withrelative good health, they should be competing at theend of the season.

The Charging Indians of Washington Marionwill enter this fall looking to take their share ofdistrict 4-4A. They have several starters comingback this season; eight defensively and five onoffense.

This season head coach John Jenkins willgraduate the first group of athletes who havebeen with him since he started in the fall of2004. One point of mention is Jenkins’ pride inthe number of his athletes that have becomeacademically eligible to step up and play in col-

lege.“I have con-

stantly stressed the

importance of academics since I signed on atWashington-Marion, and the players havereally responded," he said. "I am very proudof them.”

Jenkins is excited about this season and hehas some talent to be excited about. HaileMoses is 6’1” and 180 lbs., has 4.6 speed andwill be quarterbacking the Indians.

Moses was at wide receiver last year andJenkins is confident that he will be playing atthe next level. The Indians will use Moses asthe signal caller to take advantage of his ath-leticism.

The offensive line will have 6’2”, 310 lbs.

Michael Weston returning. The standout line-man has letters of recruitment from LSU,Auburn, and Tennessee. Look for him to bemaking holes for the backfield this fall.

On the other side of the ball defensively,Jenkins has some solid players returning. At thelinebacker positions, he has Clark Hays andMalcolm Patterson.

Both seniors have good speed, like to hit,and will come after you. Jenkins is looking forrunning backs and may use both of these play-ers in the backfield from time to time this sea-son. He believes that these two players will begetting offers from the collegiate ranks as well.

Defense for the Indians is the 4-3 and they willalso run the 3-3 stack. “I like the 3-3 because itallows us to blitz from a lot of different positions onthe field,” said the head coach.

In the secondary returning at free safety is seniorAll-District player Darrius Landry. Senior KevinChretien returns as starter again and will be in thesecondary at strong safety.

Jenkins has the entire secondary back from lastyear and is confident about his defense. The teamoverall has good speed. The offensive and defen-sive lines are in good shape. They have goodreceivers on the offense and feel they can makeplays.

There is one area that the Indians have not quitenailed down. Jenkins said. “The question mark forus this year is the running back spot.” If someonesteps up and answers that question the Indians couldmake things tough for opponents.

Jenkins said, “The key to winning district is tostop the Wing T with Eunice.” Eunice was the dis-trict champion last year and stopping the Wing Twasn’t an easy task for anyone.

Don’t look for it to be any easier this year. “Thegoal for our team this season is to win district andget past the first round of the playoffs,” saidJenkins. The only problem may be the other fourprograms trying to do the same thing.

What's the solution? We elect an aggressive and experiencedlawyer with courtroom experience as our next District Attorney -- aman who will confront criminals and protect our families and ourway of life. In fact, it is the only way we are going to be able tohandle the growing criminal activity that faces our community andfamilies today.

I pledge to the people of Calcasieu Parish that I will use my 30years of trial experience to do just that -- protect our families bypersonally prosecuting violent criminals, sex offenders, and drugdealers -- the very element that threatens all of us. The deals forcriminals will stop- I guarantee it!

SPORTSHealth

If you’re an athlete, it stands to reason thatyou need to take better care of yourself than theaverage person. You’re giving your body a lotmore physical stress than most of us. Exercise, team practice and the right amount of sleep willkeep your body in tip-top shape, but remember, what you eat can make or break you. Young ath-letes who learn to eat correctly now are settingthe stage for their future—on and off the field.

If you don’t eat right, you’re looking for trou-ble. A lot of fats and sugars will slow down yourperformance and create health problems downthe line. The best way to get the right amounts of

vitamins and minerals in your system is to eat abalanced diet of three meals a day. By bal-

anced, that means low on sugar and fat con-tent, and high in iron, calcium and protein.

Lean red meats (meats with not muchfat on them) are a good iron source,

along with leafy, green vegetables. But, you don’t need to cut out fat

altogether. Everyone needs a certainamount, especially athletes. Active

muscles burn through carbsquickly, so you will need some

fat to increase your energy.Unsaturated fat, found in

most vegetable oils, is con-sidered a “good” fat. And

there are healthy fatsout there: Raw nuts,

avocados, olives,etc., are good

snacks and willgive you the fat

you need without the side effects of the bad stuff. You also need to choose when to eat fats. Fattyfoods can slow digestion, so it’s best to avoidthem for a few hours before and after exercising

Get your calcium – to keep your bones strongand protect against stress fractures—from yogurt, cheese and low-fat milk. In addition to calciumand iron, you need other vitamins and minerals. So it’s essential to eat lots of different fruits andvegetables with your meals, which should pro-vide what you need.

Carbohydrates (breads, grains and fruit) arevery important for an athlete. Your body turnsthe carbs into glucose, which is utilized by yourmuscles when you perform on the playing field.

Contrary to the hype, you don’t need an enor-mous amount of protein to build big muscles.Muscle growth comes from regular training andhard work — not from pills and supplements.Taking in too much can harm the body, causingcalcium loss, dehydration, and even kidney prob-lems. The right amount enhances muscle recov-ery after exercise, provides amino acids (whichare essential building blocks in the body), andboosts the immune system. It’s generally recom-mended that you consume one gram of proteinper pound of bodyweight. For example, if you’rea 170-pound male, you should be consumingabout 170 grams of protein. Most young athletesget plenty of protein just by healthy eating.

Regarding dehydration, don’t bother with salttablets. Excessive salt can actually lead to dehy-dration and cause nausea and vomiting, as wellas damage to the stomach lining. Any salt youlose due to excessive sweating can generally bereplaced by one normal meal after exercise. Stickto drinking fluids. And don’t just drink when youfeel thirsty—this is a sign that your body hasneeded liquids for a while. Experts suggest thatathletes should drink 1-2 cups of water beforeexercise and a half to one cup every 15-20 min-utes during exercise.

Don’t eat too much or too little on game day,or before a workout. Have your main meal twoto four hours before (preferably, a serving of fruitor vegetables with a protein and carbohydratemain course) and then have a light snack lessthan two hours before the game begins. Eatingtoo close to game time will make you feel full

and bloated, not to mention that digestion takesup energy that should be put towards winning

the game. Everyone’s system is different, and

through trial and error, you’ll find an eat-ing plan that will work for you.

The Yellowjackets of Iowa High School willfield a very young team this season, with nineseniors donning the Jacket purple and gold. Evenso, head coach David Miller has a positive out-look for the year. “We have a very young team.Yes, we have a lot of work to do, but the kidshave a good attitude about it and if we keep

working, we willhave a chance forsome success.” This

will be Miller’s fourth year at the helm. The team will only have seven starters return-

ing, five on the offense and two defensively.Miller said that the Jackets will go with thespread for their offense this. “It has been good forus,” he said. Defensively they run the four-threeand with only two returning starters, there will bemuch learning to do.

Players returning offensively with experienceare Mike LeBlanc at running back, along with

teammates Jonathan Davis, Marcus Ceasar, andDavid Morrow at receiver. These players all hadquite a bit of playing time last year.

Logan Chapman will be taking the snaps forthe Yellowjackets. He was the starting quarter-back for the last half of the 2007 season, so thisrole is not unfamiliar to him. According toMiller, the team will have to depend on eachother to move the ball down the field and makesome points.

“I don’t think right now we have any ‘standout’strengths football-wise,” Miller stated. “Really, I thinkthis year it’s more about the mental and knowledgepart of the game. We’ve done some good work in thatarea. I think the kids have caught on to playing like afamily.”

Miller does not feel like his team will be as strongphysically or athletically as the other teams. He feelsall his players are on a pretty even playing field thisseason. “It’s a different type of team this year andthat’s fine, we have made some adjustments,” he said.He went on to say that this season is about beingpatient with the young kids and allowing them thechance to develop.

“We are going to focus more on seeing howclose we can be as a team,” Miller said. “We real-ize not everything is going to be perfect, but winlose or draw, we are going to stay together. Youhave to put yourself in position as best you can to getas many wins as you can. You cannot let the highs get

you too high and the lows get you too low, you haveto keep focusing on your long term goals. We are try-ing to do the little things better than everybody elseand that will help us a lot on the way to winning.”

Miller stated that it’s important to understand thatwhen you talk about rebuilding, it's not so muchabout future years, but just the fact they have a lot ofholes to fill right now in this years season. “It’s notthat we don’t think we can get it turned to the pointwhere by the time we get to the playoffs we can makeour run,” he said.

The Yellowjackets are in a tough district, especial-ly with state runner-up Westlake Rams in the mix.Making it equally tough for the Jackets is the fact thatso many new kids will be filling uniforms this season. However, given the stable of talent the Jackets enjoyyear in and year out, look for the team to be competi-tive, looking to improve on their 6-3 mark of 2007.

The Bulldogs ofJennings graduated 27seniors from their footballprogram and will be fill-

two-year starters on defense last year, and theloss of the Southwest Louisiana player of theyear Keegan Myers, leaves a big hole to fill atlinebacker.,” said Rusty Phelps, head coachfor the Jennings High School football team.

The offensive backfield will be returningfor the Dogs, as well as two in the offensiveline. Phelps says he will put emphasis ondefense early and continue to improve on

offense. "I think we have six or seven sopho-mores that are really going to be good intime,” he said. “As the season goes along andthey (as a team) get better, I feel like we aregoing to be in pretty good shape.”

offense since 1997 and Phelps says that is notgoing to change.

Defensively Jennings has three-year starterJake Trahan playing at one of the tackles. TheBulldogs will run the 4-2-5 defense and will relyheavily on Trahan in the line. Trahan is 6’ tall,275 lbs. and has good speed. Jake also is aprospect for the next level and has schools suchas McNeese, ULM, and Northwestern looking torecruit him.

“We need to control the ball on offense,”Phelps said. “And we do not need to get in anytrack meets.” He talked about most of his playerson defense being young. He wants his offense tomaintain control of the ball when they are on thefield.

One of the strengths for the Dogs should bespecial teams, with experience being a definiteplus this coming year.

Colby Rinquet will be the signal caller for thesecond year in a row. “Another one of the teamsstrengths will be the ability to pass the ball thisseason,” Phelps said. He feels Rinquet will beable to throw the ball more this year. It is one ofthe things the team worked real hard on in thespring. “I think we have kids on the outside now,and if we get the ball in their hands, we'll dosomething,” he said.

Winning district will not be easy and the teamwill need to “control the ball, mature quicklydefensively, and be real solid on special teams,”according to Phelps.

The Saints of St. LouisCatholic graduated 16 sen-iors from their 2007 team. They will need to replaceseven players on the

offense and four on the defensive side of theball. Mike Johns is in charge of the Saints. “Thebiggest question mark is our offensive line. Weare not very big, but I feel that we made somegood progress with them this spring,” he said.

Johns has been in the coaching business for43 years, leading the Saints for the last seven. His career has him taking teams to the playoffsfourteen times and hisoverall coaching record is130 wins and 87 losses.

Last year St. Louismade it to the quarterfinals under his tutelageand the Saints have somegood things leading theminto this fall. One thing

that Johns says will be okay is the quarterbackposition.

Senior Billy Christian has been moved undercenter. Christian was the backup at quarterbacklast year, but he made the All-District team atstrong safety on defense, so he does have timeon the field. Johns said, “He is a good leaderand is very competitive.”

The wide receiver position should be fine aswell, with junior All-District player KennyBrown returning. Johns gave opportunities tofour running backs this past spring: two sopho-mores, Darien Bartie and Dillon Berlin, and two

juniors, Stephen Sylvester and Craig Rodriquez. The offense St. Louis will run is the spread,

and the running back position could be filled byone or all of the backs in rotation. “Even thoughwe lost heavy on offense, the players are work-ing hard and we will improve with time,” Johnssaid.

Talking about his defense, Johns said “Wereally feel good about our returning defensivestarters for 2008. I felt that we had a really goodspring and the experience we got from last yearhas really paid off.”

The defense will have two All-District play-

ers returning this fall. Seniors Doug Greenman willbe back at free safety, along with Jonathan Coxanchoring one side of the line at defensive end.

Greenman was the team leader in tackles last yearwith 65 solos and 26 assists.

There will not be a change in the defense as St.Louis will stay with the 4-2-5 and this year shouldbe tough to go against.

The Saints defense will have seven startersreturning, giving them much needed experience andmaturity. The “D” will also enjoy seven seniors onthe squad this year. “If we can stay healthy, weshould have a very good year on the defensive sideof the ball,” Johns said.

Special teams should be good to go this season or

at least the kicking game. The Saints have two alldistrict players that could make the difference for theteam at some point.

Junior James Bice is back as the place kicker.Bice was 34 of 35 for PATs, five of seven in fieldgoals and his longest was 48 yards. Sophomore KrisAlbarado will once again take care of the puntingand last season averaged over thirty six yards perpunt.

District 4-3A is another class district in SouthwestLouisiana and St. Louis will have to be on its gameto challenge for the top spot. They will not get anybreaks as all the teams are good, but if they stayhealthy, who knows.

The Rams of WestlakeHigh School went all the wayto the dome last year, fallinga single point shy of winningit all. This season looks good

for them as well, even though the team suf-fered some casualties from graduation, theyshould be strong again.

Max Caldarera has been at the helm for theRams for 30 years and has a winning record

of 183-147. Hehas taken theRams to the play-

offs 19 times, but last season's second place inthe state was the Rams best ever finish.

The overall record was 14-1 and you canbet with the group he has returning, that feel-ing they had from last year’s run is still fresh.

Caldarera said, “I’m very excited about thisteam. They have a great work ethic and loveto play the game.” He spoke candidly aboutthe team practices and said that sometimes“they have to put the brakes on this bunch.”

The Rams have senior guard Ryan Davisreturning. Davis was second team All-Districtlast year, and was a big part of making holes

for offensive MVP running back VincentCollins. He gained 2,315 on 370 carries and25 touchdowns. The senior had a better thansix yard per carry average.

The offense has seven starters returning. All will be seniors with only one underclass-man on the offense. Taking the snaps at quar-terback this fall will be returning starter TrentWhitley. Trent is a senior and last seasonthrew for 1,318 on 75 completions. He com-pleted 10 for touchdowns and only three inter-ceptions.

The defense will be similar in that it has

one underclass athlete starting and is returning allstarters from last fall except one. Coach Maxspoke about his defense. He said, “We have gotsome good players over there.” That could be anunderstatement as the Rams have some serioustalent on their defense.

The players coming back were part of a defensethat posted seven shutouts last season. Out of thisgroup Westlake has All-State 6’1”, 240 lbs., righttackle Scotty Foy.

Joining him will be All-District linemanMalcolm Guillory at nose guard who measures 6’tall and weighs in at 248 lbs. Finishing the defen-sive front is Jason Slaydon, the left tackle, who is6’ tall 230 lbs., and also an All-District player.

Returning to the secondary for the Westlakedefense is inside linebacker T.J. Juranka. At 5’10”and 175 lbs., this returning senior was the leading

tackler for the Rams. He managed 90 solo tacklesand 62 assists in last season’s 13 game run.

At cornerback is 5’9”, 150 lbs., senior DonovanMcZeal. He led the team with eight interceptionsand was All-Southwest player at the cornerbackposition. The other inside linebacker is A.J. Moss,a 5’11”, 200 lbs. senior from last year that alsomade the All-District squad.

“The key to winning for us is that the teamneeds to take care of the little things, and workone week at a time towards district,” Caldarerasaid.

“Our strength has got to be this senior classcoming up with all the starters. Can we do whatwe did last year? You know as well as I you needsome luck. That said, we will be a good footballteam.”

new software designed by EA’sdevelopment studios. The center willramp up to approximately 20 full-time employees as well as more than200 part-time testers made up pre-dominately of LSU students. Payrollfor the operation is expected toincrease to approximately $5.7 mil-lion per year within two years. The QA facility will initially belocated at LSU’s South Campus aspart of the Louisiana Business andTechnology Center. Robert Jackson is in his second year leadingthe Trojans of East Beauregard. Last year was atough first year for Jackson and the Trojanswere winless at 0-10. Starting a new job is diffi-cult, but in all fairness, four out of the first fivegames played had teams ranked in the top fivein the state last season. That kind of schedule isjust brutal, first year or not.

This year Jackson looks to improve. “Lastyear was tough andwe learned a lot,”Jackson said. “The

kids just amazed me by sticking together, theyjust fought through every game, it didn’t matterwhether we were behind by six or 36, they justkept battling.”

This season brings experience and a littlemore talent to the Trojans, according toJackson. The team will have eight or nine sen-iors this year as opposed to three or four lastseason.

This past spring, the Trojans did well and thestaff noticed much improvement from the fall.“The experience helped out a lot,” Jackson said.

He also implemented a new offense in thespring. East Beau will be running the split backveer. Jackson felt like it “simplified things andgave them a lot more confidence.” That change, coupled with the majority of the offense return-ing should give the Trojans a better opportunityto win.

One of the offensive linemen who will bepaving the way for the backs is Matt Martin.Martin is a 6’1”, 280 lbs. right tackle. Jacksoncommented, “He has good speed and is a veryhard worker.” Martin plays on the defensive

line as well. Jackson spoke highly of Matt and looksfor him to help lead the Trojans this fall.

John Schlagg will be running the veer for EastBeauregard. “The senior did a good job of makingreads and picking up on the veer quickly,” Jacksonsaid. Cory Townsley was the signal caller last yearbut was moved to the running back position in thespring to “take advantage of his speed and tough-ness running the ball,” the coach said.

Jackson Mahaffey played guard last season andhe also was moved to the running back position thisspring. Coach Jackson said that he made the movebecause Mahaffey is one of his fastest players.Jacob Cooley was a running back last year and willbe running the ball quite a bit this year as well

according to Jackson. The defense that East Beauregard runs is a 5-3

and Jackson said it will “have a few new positions.”He added, “We moved and switched some peoplearound.” In the spring they tried to have playersonly going one way and this fall will try and contin-ue doing that. It will be difficult as the Trojans onlyhad 42 players this past spring.

Jackson said for them to have a chance in district, they will have to really improve on defense andcontrol the ball on offense. The Trojans have madechanges on both sides of the ball and the outlook isgood. Look for them to surprise a few people thisfall.

Coach James Marcanteland the Pickering HighSchool Red Devils ended lastseason with a 1-9 record.Last year marked the first

time Pickering did not make the playoffs in thelast six years. Marcantel has been coaching for30 years, the last eight being at PickeringHigh.

“We’re just going to try our best toimprove”Marcantel said.Helping them do

that is the fact that the Red Devils lost onlythree seniors from last year.

This team brings back six seniors for the‘08 season. “We will be relying heavily onthem,” Marcantel said. “I feel they should be ayear stronger and wiser and hope that willtranslate into a better won-lost record.”

The split back veer is what Pickering runsoffensively. Currently, three athletes are com-peting for an open quarterback slot. Marcantelstated, “We may alternate them unless one ishead and shoulders above the others. Untilthen, we are going to keep rolling them around

until we find one that fits better in the niche.”Right now, no one has separated themselves

from the others, but at this point, BrendanSmith may possibly get the nod. The seniorstands 5’10”, 160 lbs. Smith was a receiverand defensively was in the secondary forPickering last season, so he is able to drawfrom that time on the field.

The Red Devils have two seniors in thebackfield. Cartez Shanklin is 5’10” and 185lbs., and next to him is Paul Marcantel.Marcantel is small at 5’9” and 165 lbs., buthas four-six speed and runs tough. He will also

start at the middle linebacker position defensively. The offensive line is young and small with only

one athlete over 200 pounds, so just pushing peo-ple around is unlikely. They will need to be quickand have to finesse people this year.

Pickering will have one player in both theoffensive and defensive line that had play time lastfall in Senior Zack Dunn. He will be startingoffensively at the left guard, and at left defensiveend this year.

Defensively, they will run the four-three. TheRed Devils will have the good fortune of havingtheir linebackers returning from last year.

Marcantel is looking to have another senior thathas been sidelined by injuries for the last two sea-sons. Josh Savoy will be at the wide receiver onoffense and defensively, he will be in the secondary.

“What strengths the team does have will befound in the experience of his players that arecoming back,” said Coach Marcantel. “That, cou-pled with his linebackers on defense and his run-ning backs on offense.”

On the downside, Pickering has only 24 players. For any school that is a difficult thing to over-come, especially in 2-A district program.Regardless, the athletes that the Red Devils put onthe field will be ready to play. It takes a specialkind of dedication to go out and compete and lookfor this team to fight all season long.

The 4-2A district has some class and talent. When asked about the run at district, Marcantelsaid, “If they give us a chance, we are going totake it from them.”

Head coach Johnny Cryertook the Rosepine HighSchool Eagles to the playoffslast year. The leader for theEagles had a six and five sea-

son. That was better than 1-9 the year before. The Eagles have a lot of people coming back to

the team this year. “Our season really depends on ourteam staying healthy and doing what we do best,”said Cryer. “I feel like we will be competitive and

win some games.”They will have 10

seniors on the team.

The Eagles started six freshmen last fall and has alarge sophomore class to work with. "I feel like withthe group of kids we have, we will be competitive forthe next couple of years," Cryer said.

He says this season the offense will throw the ballmore and be less predictable. Cryer was confidentabout his defense. “Defensively, we had fiveshutouts last year and we look to have shutouts againthis year, because we’ve got just about all of our kidsback,” he said. “The kids are dedicated, love to workand are anxious to get started.”

Rosepine will run the multiple “I” offense. Theywill mix in different formations, incorporate the

spread and run plays from the shotgun with four wideand sometimes five wide to create seams in thedefenses, according to Cryer. “People are going tohave to prepare a little bit more for us,” he said.

Quarterback for the team will be sophomore ClintWhite. Clint started last year as a freshman. In fact, the entire offensive backfield had starting freshmen.

According to Cryer, White is one of the best ath-letes on the field and is a very accurate passer. Hechecks in at 5’9” and 185 lbs. Good things areexpected from him this season.

Sophomore Gary Suydam will be returning to thebackfield for the Eagles this fall. Suydam suffered an

injury in the first district game in '07 that put him out forthe rest of the season.

“He probably had the best spring of anyone on theteam.” Cryer said of the running back. “He is one of thestrongest kids on the team and runs around a four-seven,has some breakaway speed if he can get in the open. He'sjust a very hard runner.”

The entire Eagles offensive line will return from lastseason, challenging defenses to keep them off the field. They are large, averaging 6’2” and 262 lbs. across thefront.

Senior All-State right tackle William Burks is 6’5” andweighs in at an impressive 315 lbs. Next to him is seniorthree-year starter Donovan Miller. Miller is no sloucheither at 6’3”, 295 lbs. The duo will be an imposing forcefor every defence they face, and clearing lanes for thebackfield will not be a hard task.

Defensively, the Eagles will operate the four-three, butmay vary off of it from time to time. Anchoring the ends

for the defense will be two All-District players. On thestrong side is senior George Bailey; on the weak side willbe sophomore Travis Moses.

When asked what the key to winning district would be,Cryer said, “We need to win early.” He also talked aboutGueydan and Hamilton Christian being important gamesleading them into district play. The quality of the two pro-grams cannot be overlooked.

Look for the Eagles to control the O-line with theirsize. The team has some depth, so if they do sufferinjuries, they feel very comfortable with the players in thebackup role. As the season progresses, they should just getbetter.

One fact worth mentioning is that the Eagles havenever won a playoff game or held a playoff game athome. This 2008 team is planning to take the next stepand change history.

The Knights of SouthBeauregard have a new headman. Coach Shawn Demerittwill take over the top spotthis season and tells us his

outlook for the 2008 season. Demeritt has been theoffensive coordinator for the Knights the last twoseasons, and with the departure of Carl Flanaganto the Elton Indians, was hired as head coach.

In assessing his team, Demeritt commented,“We have 14 startersback for this season.Eight are on

defense, making our “D” our strong point goinginto this season. We lost our tailback and ourquarterback who were both All-District players.”Coach Demeritt feels that they will be furtheralong defensively early while they find the rightplayers to fill the gaps left from last year offen-sively.

The offense for the Knights has their fullbackreturning, Dylan Fowler. Fowler started as a fresh-man and is a very strong player, bench pressing375 lbs. Dylan gained over 400 yards last seasonand averaged five plus yards per carry. Prettyimpressive when you realize he didn’t start until

the fourth game of the season. The team has two players competing for the

quarterback position. The first is Rickey Ivey, who started at safety last year as a sophomore. Thesecond is Jordan Johnson, who started severalgames last year at corner for the Knights and isone of five freshmen that started for the team lastyear.

The two are splitting time right now in practice. Both young men played quarterback on the JuniorVarsity team last year. “It’s a tough battle and theyare really doing a good job competing,” Demerittsaid.

Demeritt is comfortable with both athletes and islooking for the one that steps up their level of play anddoes not turn the ball over. “That will put us in thebest position to win,” he said. The chances of both ath-letes taking snaps during the year are very good. “Ihave done it before. They can both play quarterback, orone can play receiver and the other can play quarter-back.”

South Beau is going to throw the ball more thanthey did last year. Demeritt is quite confident with hisreceiving corps this year. The team will be more multi-ple on offense and he feels by the time district playcomes around, they should be much better offensively.

The coach says that they will have more players get-ting the ball, unlike last year, when it was no secretwho the team relied on. Look for the Knights to be inmore three receiver sets offensively, making it moredifficult for opposing teams to plan for them.

Defensively, the Knights will be in a four-three.“We are staying with that base front, but we havechanged up a lot of our coverages and the way weattack” said Demeritt, adding, “nothing drastic, I justfeel it fits the kids that we have. You have to change to

(fit) your personnel.”The Knights secondary is young. But given the

depth in that area, they will be able to rotate playerswithout problems, keeping legs fresh for better cover-age. Joey Nixon returns at the weak-side linebackerposition defensively. He was district MVP last year andfirst team All-State at his position. Nixon also playsrunning back at times for the Knights.

When you look at South Beauregard’s strengths, youhave to consider six out of seven returning in thedefensive front a positive. It's a real plus in that itgives the defense experience. The other strengthDemeritt feels good about is his offensive line. SeniorJake Barrow is second team all district at center, andthe Knights have two tackles that started last year asfreshmen coming back. Demeritt feels confident withhis offensive and defensive lines.

An important game early for South Beau will beIota. The coach feels this game can help his team asthey go down the stretch into their season. The key towinning district for the Knights? “We have got to playgood defense, no doubt about it,” Demeritt said. “Thiswill create short fields for our offense, especially early

Brad Kellogg is moving into his second year ashead coach for the DeQuincy High Tigers.Kellogg's philosophy is to first concentrate onthemselves. “I don’t worry about anybody else; wehave to get better doing what we do,” he said.

Kellogg has nine returning starters on defenseand eight returning offensively. He is hoping the

experience will carryinto this fall and

help them not make the turnovers and mental errorsthat were made last season.

The Tigers were young last year and Kelloggfeels like that was a contributing factor in the sea-son. “It wasn’t their physical ability that held themback last year, it was more from an experiencestandpoint,” Kellogg said. The team worked hardin the spring to correct the problems from last year.He went on to say that the team is still young, but

feels they will be better.Last year Kellogg introduced the multiple “I”

offense, something the Tigers should be more com-fortable with this year. According to Kellogg, theywill spread the offense more in an attempt to lettheir skill people work in “space” and let the speedthat they possess work for them. Kellogg said,“The team is faster this year over last and the kidswork hard and love lifting weights.”

The main difference from last year is experience.“Anytime you have experience, it just makes things eas-ier to coach,” Kellogg said.

The Tigers lost two four year starters and one threeyear starter from their 4-3 defense, a scheme that willremain again this year. “That kind of experience is noteasily replaced,” Kellogg said. “But with the other ninereturning from last fall it may not be so bad.”

He has one player that will make anyone smile andthat is David Wing. Wing is 6’4” and weighs in at 275lbs. The senior is a four-year starter at right offensiveguard. He is a three-year starter on the other side of theball at defensive end.

Wing was All-District on both sides of the ball in2007. Kellogg said, “His motor runs a 100 miles anhour all the time.”

This season, the Tigers will be able to put more play-ers on the field and will only have one going both ways. That is a change from last year where it was the exactopposite.

The strengths of the team will be playing experience, team speed, and depth. According to Kellogg, this is themost kids out for the Tigers since the 2004 season. Theyhave 56 athletes on the roster for the Tigers this year.

Commenting on his outlook for the Tigers, Kelloggsaid, “Eliminate mistakes, eliminate penalties andturnovers and I think we can play with anybody on ourschedule.” He has respect for the other programs. Hesaid that every week is a playoff game in district, butthinks they have the athletes that can match up witheveryone.

DeQuincy will take on South Cameron at home thisyear. Kellogg says this game is important in setting thetone for the season. South Cameron and DeQuincy bat-tle it our every year and it has become a rivalry. It isalways the first game for both schools and, even thoughit is a non-district affair, the fans come out in numbersto support both teams.

The Kinder Yellowjackets have some posi-tions with question marks, according to headcoach Jeff Wainwright. “We are hoping to usethe pre-district schedule to get those questionmarks taken off and make a competitive run atdistrict,” he said.

He talked about the quality teams they willface in their dis-trict. District 5-AAis a small districtand only has four

teams: Welsh, Vinton, Lake Arthur, andKinder. “Being in such a small district doesnot give you much room for error, so any losscan set you back,” he said.

Kinder will have some younger people onboth sides of the ball this season. “Depth is aserious concern. The guys that we are going tohave on the field will be very capable ofdoing their job, but if we have many injuries,we may struggle,” said Wainwright.

Kinder lost quite a few seniors and other

personnel for various reasons. “It did open upa chance for a lot of younger guys to step upand play. They’re going to be good footballplayers. It’s just a matter of how many gamesinto the season it is going to take us to getthem ready,” he said.

Offensively, the Yellowjackets run thespread and will work out of the shotgun, usingfour wide outs and one tailback. The offenseshould be okay with eight returning that havestarted or had a lot of playing time last fall.

The defense will have more to work on as therewill only be four coming back to help. One end ofthe defensive line should be okay with senior JoshKingery returning.

He weighs in at 6’2”, 240 lbs., and has four-nine speed. Kingery plays defensive end for theYellowjackets and has quite a few schools at thenext level scouting him..

Touching once again on the issue of depth,Wainwright said that in the last three years, they've been going basically one way. “Thisyear, we are going to have some kids going bothways and that concerns me,” he said.

When asked about team strengths, Wainwrightsaid “the number one thing that we are going tohave to lean on all season is going to be our teamspeed. We’ve got a lot of above-average fast kids

on the team.” Coach feels that he has above aver-age speed from his quarterback down to the line-man.

The second thing Wainwright talked about washis team’s attitude, saying “We’ve got a bunch ofguys on the team that believe they can win, andthey are going to play with a purpose of knowinghow to win.”

Wainwright feels that if the team can keep fromgetting banged up too badly, they will be able tocompete with anybody.

When you look at the district, staying injuryfree will be very critical, especially if they don’thave experience to fill the voids injuries create. With the teams in this district, not getting bangedup might be difficult.

In District 5-2A, some-thing special has hap-pened to the Lake ArthurTigers this year. For thefirst time in head coach

Chad Lavergne’s tenure, the team has enoughplayers to go one way on both sides of theball. This is a luxury in 5-2A play, and due

in part to a strongjunior class.

Only six sen-

iors will run the gridiron this year, but over20 juniors will be putting on the Tiger jersey."We'll have seven or eight juniors on bothsides of the ball this season," said Lavergne, adding "About half of those have play timefrom last year."

One of the differences from last year is theobvious depth that Lake Arthur will havegoing into this season. “It’s a domino effectwhen you are able to do that (playing oneway)," said Lavergne. "Now you are able to

put your starters more on specialty teams, special teams should improve, along withoffense and defense.”

Offensively, the Tigers will run the splitback veer as well as one back sets. “We havesome skill people and some speed, we arejust real small on the line,” Lavergne com-mented. The offense will be balanced ingaining yards both on the ground and in theair, however, the team will not shy awayfrom putting it in the air first.

One of the players that will be catching theball is junior Jacob Martin. At just 5’7” and 135lbs., Martin runs very good routes, has deceptivespeed and had two games last year over 100yards.“He is dangerous,”Lavergne said.

The team is making a change this year defen-sively and will run the “fifty” base defense withcover two in the secondary. Lavergne movedfrom the 4-3 to take better advantage of his play-ers speed as well as an experienced secondarythat will be returning this year.

Senior Trey Dugas had a good year last seasonat defensive end and was “a two way starter withasthma,” according to Lavergne. “We are lookingfor him to have a better season this year becausehe will not be going both ways.”

Lake Arthur only has seven starters returning, three on offense and four on defense. Helpingwith experience are the underclassmen coming inthat have a lot of play time from last year.Lavergne says the key to winning district is con-sistency and coming on strong in the end.

"We need to play good football towards theend of the year,” he said. “We have to learn towin the close games.” The Tiger’s first step willbe to finish above .500 in 2008, improving upontheir 4-5 record of the ‘07 season. Commentingon the overall picture, Lavergne concluded that“playing in such a small district, you just can’tafford to lose any games.”

The Lions of Vinton High School arelooking to be in contention this fall. Secondyear head Lion Wendell LeJeune is confidentabout his team, looking to improve on theteam’s three and six record from last fall.

“Last year they were young and madesome young mistakes,” LeJeune said.Growing pains will still be there, but thisyear he feels that his team will be competingon pretty even footing with the rest of the 5-

2A district thisyear.

One problem

that the Lions will face this year is depth.LeJeune says he doesn’t believe they will beable to keep some of his players from goingboth ways. That will be important as they gointo the season.

Vinton has made some changes with per-sonnel, and one is the movement of seniorDerek LeJeune (no relation) to quarterback.Derek was at the receiver and free safetypositions last year, but this season will betaking snaps.

Playing quarterback last year was GeremyRoss. Ross will be a junior this year and has

been moved to the wide receiver position. “Itwill give us a little more speed on the outsidewhich will help,” Coach LeJeune said. “Hehas a real high cruising speed.”

Chris Sterling is a 160-pound senior whowill be at the running back position. LeJeunenoted that he also has good speed and is a“tough kid.”

The Lions will run the spread offense andaccording to LeJeune, they will be undercenter more this year than in the past. Also, look for the Lions to use two quarterbacksfrom time to time. “I like the differences that

it will create for the defenses,” said LeJeune. “Itgives the other teams a little bit more to practiceagainst.”

LeJeune stated that the strength for the Lionswill be their 4-2-5 defense. One leader that willhelp set the defensive tone is returning seniorand all district linebacker Joe Biondini.

He is 5’10”, 180 lbs. and as a sophomore, started at the strong safety. Last year, Joe found ahome at linebacker. Coach says he is just a goodfootball player. Another defensive standout forVinton is senior Dakota Nezat.

Nezat, like Biondini, started at one position(linebacker) his sophomore year, but found hishome at strong safety in his junior season. Nezatis also a first team All-District player.

LeJeune likes his chances going into this sea-son and feels that they will need to control theball. He thinks if they can do that and his defensedoes what it is supposed to do, they can compete. The defense should be ahead of the offense early.Look for the Lions to have a real solid runninggame.

The team has a lot of seniors and the gameexperience and maturity they bring will definite-ly help. Going into district, LeJeune has a lot ofrespect for the other teams in 5-2A, but feels thathis team will be competing for the district crown.A lot of things have to happen, but LeJeuneseems to have his team going in the right direc-tion with confidence.

The Greyhounds of Welsh High haveRobbie Gates as their pack leader. This isGates second year as top dog and first fullyear at his position.

He took over after spring training in 2007and said they are looking forward to the2008 season. The dogs have 78 kids on theteam and with those numbers should be ableto have some depth. “We have a lot of kidscoming back from last season and have a

large senior groupas well,” saidGates.

"The team had a real good spring in theweight room and on the field, and they hada real good summer as well,” he said.

There were 11 seniors lost from last sea-son. Because of that, Gates is looking toplay a lot of his kids early, giving the teamexperience to draw upon later in the season.

A difference for this year’s team over lastwill be speed. Gates said they have more ofit this year. With the added speed, the teamwill be changing the defense from the four-two five to the four-three. “It’s a better fitfor us and with the speed we have, will

allow us to be a bit more aggressive,” saidGates.

On the other side of the ball, theGreyhounds will run the “Wing T.” “This isa base offense giving us the ability to getpretty multiple and do things out of it; weare not going to just run the sweep allnight,” he said.

Gates said they have three real goodbacks this year, allowing them to move oneof the running backs from last season toquarterback. Senior Mike Caraway will beunder the center taking snaps for the team

and is one of the fastest athletes the Greyhoundshave, according to Gates.

Behind Caraway will be senior Kade Frey.Frey has four-six speed and at 6’1” and 190 lbs.has the size to carry the ball from the fullbackposition.

Along with Frey is junior tailback WillGuidry and senior Kegan Ryder in the wingbackposition. Coach says they all have good speedand are strong runners.

Strengths for the dogs will be the runninggame, the defense against the pass, and specialteams. “We are a work in progress,” said Gates.“However, I believe that by mid-season weshould be fine.”

Winning the district will not be easy. Gatesstated, “I feel like our team will need to be for-tunate and come through the non-district gamesin good shape.”

The dogs are trying to put eleven and elevenon the field. However, if they sustain anyinjuries that could change.

The first two games will be key games forWelsh. Gates wants to set things up early and bein the win column after they play Red River andRayne. Look for the Greyhounds to be competi-tive and to again make things interesting inDistrict 5-2A.

Stories about athletes and steroidsseem to pop up regularly in the news. Some professional baseball players, cyclists, and track stars have beenaccused of — and in some cases haveadmitted to — using steroids to give

them an edge competitively. And steroid use has trickled

down to younger athletes too,who face fierce pressure to bestronger and faster, and to makeit to college and professionalleagues. Some research hasshown that 5% of teen boys and

2.5% of teengirls have

used someform ofanabolic

steroids.Steroids

promise boldresults, but there

is little proof thatthey deliver any such

benefits. Extensiveresearch, however, shows

how they can harm develop-ing kids — with some of these

ill effects not likely to turn upuntil years later. And steroids are

illegal, too. It’s important to understand the

facts about steroids, their side effects, and what can drive kids to try them.Being aware of the kinds of pressureskids deal with in sports can help youmake sure that your child isn’t at risk.

WHAT ARE STEROIDS?Drugs commonly referred to as

“steroids” are classified as anabolic (oranabolic-androgenic) and corticosteroids.Corticosteroids, such as cortisone, aredrugs that doctors typically prescribe tohelp control inflammation in the body. They’re often used to help control condi-tions like asthma and lupus. They’re notthe same as the anabolic steroids thatreceive so much media attention for theiruse by some athletes and bodybuilders.

Anabolic steroids are synthetic hor-mones that can boost the body’s ability toproduce muscle and prevent musclebreakdown. Some athletes take steroidsin the hopes that they will improve their

ability to run faster, hit farther, lift heav-ier weights, jump higher, or have moreendurance. In the United States, it isagainst the law to use anabolic steroidswithout a prescription.

Androstenedione, or “andro,” is akind of anabolic steroid taken by athleteswho want to build muscle. But researchsuggests that andro taken in large dosesevery day can significantly increase lev-els of testosterone, which can lead to anumber of health problems.

HOW DO ANABOLIC STEROIDS WORK?

Anabolic steroids are drugs thatresemble the chemical structure of thebody’s natural sex hormone testosterone, which is made naturally by the body.Testosterone directs the body to produceor enhance male characteristics such asincreased muscle mass, facial hairgrowth, and deepening of the voice, andis an important part of male developmentduring puberty.

When anabolic steroids increase thelevels of testosterone in the blood, theystimulate muscle tissue in the body togrow larger and stronger. However, theeffects of too much testosterone circulat-ing in the body can be harmful over time.

DANGERS OF ANABOLIC STEROIDS

Steroids are dangerous for two rea-sons: They are illegal, and they can dam-age a person’s health, especially if usedin large doses over time. Also, the healthproblems caused by steroids may notappear until years after the steroids aretaken.

Although they might help build mus-cle, steroids can produce very seriousside effects. Using steroids for a longtime can negatively affect the reproduc-tive system. In males, steroids can lead toimpotence; a reduction in the amount ofsperm produced in the testicles, and evenreduced testicle size.

Females who use steroids may haveproblems with their menstrual cyclesbecause steroids can disrupt the matura-tion and release of eggs from the ovaries. This disruption can cause long-termproblems with fertility. Teen girls andwomen also risk the additional side

effects of male-type facial and bodyhair growth, male-pattern baldness, and deepening of the voice.

Steroids taken for an extended periodof time also can cause:

• stunted growth in teens (by causingbones to mature too fast and stopgrowing at an early age), • liver tumors, • abnormal enlargement of the heartmuscles, • violent, aggressive behavior andmood swings, • blood lipid abnormalities that con-tribute to heart disease, • acne (or a worsening of acne), • increased breast growth in males, especially teens, • irreversible stretch marks,• a heightened tendency for hair lossand male-pattern baldness, and • muscle aches.

In addition to the health risks, kidswho use steroids without prescriptionare breaking the law. Drug testing forall athletes has become more preva-lent, and those who fail a drug test forsteroids can face legal consequences, including jail time, monetary fines, exclusion from an event or team, orforfeiture of trophies or medals.

Andro use has been banned bymany sports organizations, includingthe International Olympic Committee, the National Football League, theNational Basketball Association, theNational Collegiate AthleticAssociation, the Association of TennisProfessionals, and most high schoolathletic associations.

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT STEROIDS

Many pressures may drive youngathletes to experiment with steroids.Although most athletes exercise hard, eat properly, and take care of theirbodies to maintain optimal fitness andperformance levels, athletic competi-tion and the desire to look physically

toned and fit can be fierce.

Help kids handle these pressures by:

• discussing healthy competition withthem, • talking about the coaches’ and teammembers’ attitudes toward steroids, • knowing what kind of sports envi-ronments they compete in, and • encouraging them to prepare mental-ly and physically for competition byeating well and getting enough rest.

If you suspect your child is usingsteroids, watch for these warningsigns:

• exaggerated mood swings:• worsening acne • unusually greasy skin with stretchmarks • a sudden increase in muscle size

If you see any of these signs inyour child, talk with your doctor.

Steroids may give kids the sensethat they’re stronger and more athlet-ic, but the consequences are too dan-gerous to risk. Help kids stay awayfrom steroids by encouraging healthyeating and fitness habits that will helpthem feel well prepared for competi-tion.

When steroid use among pro ath-letes is in the news, use that as alaunching point to discuss the issue, making sure your child understandsthe health risks, the possibility oflegal trouble, and the concept thatusing steroids is cheating.

When the final regularseason game was played lastyear, Hamilton ChristianAcademy found itself atopof the 5-2A district with no

defeats in district play, and only a single loss to4-3A standout St. Louis.

“We are really favored and blessed,” saidhead coach Joseph Maggio. “We had a lot oftalent last year that graduated, but the Lord hasjust blessed us with new talent. Both our offen-

sive and defensivelines I think arereally top notch.”

He went on to say that he is pleased with theteam's talent this year. Isaiah Davis will be step-ping into the leadership role as starting quarter-back and according to Maggio, has a couple ofcolleges already looking at him.

“Kyle Peterson is coming back at the runningback position and will also play in the defensivebackfield," said the Warrior’s skipper. “DarriusThomas in the shadows last year…will be aforce to be reckoned with.”

Sitting back and assessing the 2008 squad,Maggio stated the season will sport a different“gumbo.” The analogy he describes is one ofdifferent flavors and he likens his teams to the

different kinds of gumbo. “Last year may havebeen seafood and this one may be a chickengumbo, but it’s going to be good." A little dif-ferent seasoning and the contents are slightlydifferent, but the outcome is the same...goodstuff.

The team will field 13 seniors to the lineupfor the coming season. "The kids have beenworking hard and it’s just different…our seniorsand our coaches on and off the field, they have alot of say and ownership in this team and thedirection that it goes. Our seniors definitely, unbelievably have been remarkable in their lead-ership,” said Maggio.

The offense will have a couple of 6’ tall receiversin John Johnson and Tyler Roberts. Chris Avery willadd speed to an already fast receiving corp andoffense which Coach Maggio feels should be prettygood.

Brandon Maggio will be the offensive coordinatoragain this year, running a multiple offense alongwith the split back veer. Look for the team to“spread out” and with the O-line in good shape, make things difficult to defend.

Defensively, Hamilton runs a 4-3 and has sevenstarters returning. It is a defensive scheme thatallowed only 73 points in district play last year, tak-ing the top spot in the district. With the bulk of thedefense coming back, the Warriors should onceagain be tough defensively.

Maggio mentioned more than once how much“senior leadership” is playing a role for his team.Summer workouts are not mandatory, but coach says

“we’ve had more attend this summer than all my 30years.”

He talked about a couple of other strengths theteam has. One is team speed and the other is the line, both offense and defense. “When I think about ourlinemen, I think good thoughts,” he said. Many willbe seniors this year. Maggio says, “really and truly, Ithink that is where the battles are won.”

The key for Hamilton to win district is “focus.”“The heart and the desire are there,” says Maggio.“They can’t lose their focus, it can’t be a me or Ithing, it has got to be team, team, what can I do tohelp the team. The outlook is great and the attitudesare super.”

A strong defense, leadership from the seniors anda rock solid coaching staff should put Hamilton indirect contention for the District 5-A title, a road thatis sure to run through Basile in '08.

Merryville HighSchool has had six dif-ferent coaches in asmany years, keeping theprogram from fully

developing. New head coach Mark Delaneyexpects things will be different in the com-ing season.

“Merryville has given me an opportunityand they will not regret it,” said Delaney.

He has beencoaching for 17

years, three of those in the college ranks athis alma mater, Henderson State. This willbe Delaney’s first stint as head of a footballprogram.

Delaney states that the outlook for thePanthers is a positive one. “There will be alot of teaching… I want to concentrate ontechnique and learning how to finish thegame,” said the freshman coach. “Being sin-gle A means we are going to have to useathletes going both ways, so it is our job toget them in shape.”

Delaney signed on in the first part ofJune and was not at Merryville for springtraining. He was able to set up a summerprogram for those athletes that wanted toparticipate and was pleased with theturnout.

Offensively, the Panthers will operate outof a multiple “Wing T.” Delaney feels thatthis offense is a good starting ground and isthe type of offense you can build from. Headded, “I believe that offense is about fittingaround the personnel that you have. Given

that belief, Delaney is making the wing “T” theoffense of choice to start his program.

At the time of the interview, Delaney had nothad time to evaluate his players individually, sohe was unable to comment on the athletes andtheir positions.

“I believe defense wins games for you,” saidDelaney. This year the Panthers will implementa 4-2-5 defense. He hopes to have his defenseup and running quickly as he starts his first sea-son. “Offense puts points on the board, butwhen it comes down to it, I want that good soliddefense,” he said.

“The key to a good team is being balanced,”Delaney said. “If you don’t control the ball on

offense, that puts your defense in a bind, so weare going to be balanced.”

The schedule for Merryville is not an easyone. When asked about the schedule he said, “Ibelieve to be the best, you have to play thebest.” That said, don’t look for the Panthers toshy away from any of the competition.

There will be 14 positions on both sides ofthe ball filled with experienced athletes fromlast season. That experience should be helpfulto the coaching staff. With one of the toughestdistricts in 1-A ball, the Panthers can use all thepluses they can muster.

Oberlin High Schoolbrings Pat Miller in as thehead Tiger of the footballteam. Miller was with theMerryville program in ‘07,and coming in, has some

work ahead of him. "This year will be a rebuildingyear as we lost sixteen seniors last year,” he said.

That might be a huge understatement with theloss of such talent as Byron Skinner, Tyler Strotherand Gerald Artist in the backfield.

“They all played, many on both sidesof the ball. We have

four returning on offense and four on defense, sothis is definitely a rebuilding year,” he said.

“Going through the spring with these guys, theywere real impressive, just watching them in thespring game against Lake Arthur.” Miller said, “Ireally feel good about our running game.”

The offense will not change from what Oberlinhas been running. Oberlin runs the double wing andhas had great success with it in the past. Miller said,“The kids believe in it and the coaches here believein it, so we are going to continue to run it. The oldsaying is true, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”

“Defensively, we are going to continue to run thesame thing; they lead the district last year in defen-

sive stats,” said Miller. The defense will be the four-two-five.

According to Miller, one strength Oberlin doeshave is the running game. He said, “that’s what wedo here, we run the football. We feel we’ve got a lotof depth in that category, having four or five guyswe think can carry the ball.”

Special teams will also play to a large part offuture success for the Tigers. Miller is a believer inspecial teams and will put a lot of emphasis in thatarea. “I do make it a big part of our strategy and ourgames,” he said.

The freshman coach said he feels good about oneof his young running backs. He likes sophomore

Cedric Skinner. Skinner started at one of the linebackerpositions for the Tigers last fall and saw some play timewith the offense.

“He has real good vision, has speed and size,” saidMiller. Look for Skinner to be more involved with theoffense this fall.

Returning Senior Matt Karam will be under centerfor the Tigers offensively. Karam is a three year starter atthe quarterback position, has good speed and a goodarm.

Miller feels that if they need to throw the ball, Karamwill get the job done. Don’t look for that to happenthough, as the Tigers will primarily be focused on therun.

Center Cody Dubroc does a great job in the middle ofthe line according to Miller. “That’s where this offensestarts, at center,” he said. Dubroc is 6’1” and weighs inat 340 lbs. and is just a junior this season.

Junior inside linebacker Jacob Ware “really has anose for the football” said Miller. He feels that Jacob

could be one of the area’s best if he continues to workand improve. Ware is 5’11”, 175 lbs., has four-seven,four-eight speed and will get after you according toMiller.

The 2007 season was one of great disappointment forthe Tigers. The previous year saw the team go undefeat-ed in regular play at 10-0. With so many returning sen-iors and great talent, a repeat of that performance wasexpected, but didn't materialize under then head coachLarry Alexander. Alexander is now principal at theschool.

The Tigers always enjoy a relatively sizable stable oftalent year in and year out. Predictiablity of a singledeminsion attack on offense might be their Achilles heel.Mixing it up with Karam’s talent in the air should pro-vide the diversity they need to keep defenses off bal-ance.

But as always, defense will be their key. When asked about their changes for district, Miller

said, “If we can steal one or two, we’ve got a chance.”

Perry Lalande, the skipper forthe Tarpons of South CameronHigh School says they are hopingto do better than they did last year. The group ended the 2007 seasonwith a loss to Oak Grove in the

first round of the playoffs.Hurricane Rita coming through a few seasons

back didn't do theTarpons any favors.“The effect of that

event is is still being felt on our program today,” saidLalande. “Our numbers are way down.”

They only have about 40 kids compared to 1986when South Cameron had somewhere in the neigh-borhood of 80-plus coming out to play ball.

They have a lot of athletes from last fall returning, and because of that, Lalande hopes to win a fewmore than last year and do much better in the play-offs.

Last season, Lalande put in the 4-2-5 defense, which was quite a big change for the Tarpons. “I

have been running the 50 defense for 30 years, so wehad to overcome a lot last year,” Lalande said.

With the returning personnel, he feels they will bemuch better defensively this season. A lot of theirskill people are coming back and he likes what isthere.

The offensive line will be young this year andwill have two starters returning, and with thosetwo Lalande feels like he will have something tobuild around. They also have some skill peoplereturning on the offense. “We are not going to win

too many races, but at least if we are going in the rightdirection it helps us and we should be okay,” he said.

The offense has been a multiple type, but Lalande isgoing back to the “Wing T” this season in an effort tomake better use of his players. One of the things thathas him a little worried is the small numbers. “Eachyear it gets more difficult,” he said. “Right now in thebeginning stages, we’ve got a lot of people going bothways so that is going to be tough.”

Junior Dex Murphy was a starter at free safety forthe Tarpons last season. He covered double duty byalternating on offense in the backfield. This season, look for him to be more involved offensively. Therewill be four returning starters on offense and six return-ing on the defensive side of the ball.

Joey Trosclair played at the outside linebacker posi-tion and the wide receiver spot last season. Lalande hasmoved him into the tight end position offensively andhas praise for Trosclair as one of the leaders for theTarpons this season.

South Cameron has Kyle Little returning to take thesnaps this season. With a year of experience under hisbelt, he should do well this fall.

The district that the Tarpons compete in is one ofthe best in the state. With the likes of Basile, Oberlin, and Hamilton Christian, the district is solid from top tobottom. Merryville and Elton both have new coaches, but both schools have history and like to win.

If there is a light that can be found, it may be thatSouth Cameron has both Basile and Hamilton Christianat home this year. Lalande is optimistic but knows itwill be tough. “They play well no matter where theyare,” he said.

South Cameron may not have speed, and they maybe down in their numbers, but if you think PerryLalande won’t have his team ready you’ll be mistaken.Lalande has been around a while and you’d betterbelieve the Tarpons will be on the field ready to go forkickoff.

Carl Flanagan has left South Beauregard tolead the Elton Indians into a new era. Flanagantook the Knights of South Beau to the playoffslast year, — a history-making season for theKnights. They ended the regular season with a 7-3 record, the best ever for South Beau.

Taking that into consideration, the EltonIndians should have high expectations fromFlanagan. Truth is, Flanagan is returning to thevery place where he held his first head coaching

job from 1985 to1989. Flanagan hasbeen coaching for

33 years and also held coaching positions atSulphur High and Sam Houston High.

“I’m familiar with the community,” saidFlanagan. “Several of the kids I’m coaching, Icoached their parents or relatives. It’s pretty neat.I'm really enjoying it.”

This veteran coach has his work cut out forhim at Elton. He will inherit a program that went0-10 last season; however, only two seniors grad-uated from last year’s team.

“The upside to this story is, virtually every-body is coming back,” he said. “Although theyhave had some bad experiences, it’s been experi-

ence on Friday night. That means that they knowwhat it is like to be in a varsity game and theyknow what to expect, and that is the upside forus.”

The Indians have six seniors returning to thesquad. According to Flanagan, a big plus isreturning signal caller Austin Daggett. The springbrought some changes for the team. He tookthings slow to get the group on track.

Another thing that has changed for this year’ssquad is the number of athletes coming out toplay ball. According to Flanagan, Elton ended theseason last year with only 23 kids. “That makes it

hard to compete,” he said. Elton is a small 1-Aschool, so numbers are important.

The team had 43 on the field this past spring. “Itgives us a fighting chance,” said Flanagan. The bulkof the numbers are with the incoming freshman andsophomores, and coach is pleased that he has youngathletes interested in playing.

Elton will run a multiple “I” offense this seasonand will move the tailback around to give them someoptions and show different formations. Changes thathave been made on the offense is the movement ofTodd White from the interior line to tight end.

Brennan Robinson will be on the strong side of theline at tackle next to White. The right side of the lineshould be solid as both lineman are seniors with expe-rience. At the right guard is sophomore Jacob

Robinson, who had some play time last season.Defense will be a 4-3 for the Indians and Flanagan

says they will be “active and move a lot.” JoshVidrine was one of the Indians leading tacklers lastyear and he will be returning to the weakside line-backer position. There will be a few new faces for theIndians, but they have a lot returning on both sides ofthe ball.

Look for the Indians to improve slowly. Shouldthis happen, they could be in the middle of things bythe time playoffs roll around. Elton has a history ofbeing a tough team. With last season behind them, they are working toward improvement. CoachFlanagan appears to be comfortable there, so don’t besurprised if you see the Indians making some noiselate in the season.

The Basile Bearcats have Coach TonyBertrand as the man in charge. Tony is in his15th year at Basile, third as head coach.

When asked about his overall outlook for theseason, Coach Bertrand stated that they’re excit-ed to get started and find that out themselves. “Ithink every year your goal is to win the districtchampionship,” said Bertrand. “There are differ-ent goals you try to achieve and set each year. Itry to instill in the kids that they must set goalsand work hard to achieve them.”

Basile faces threeAA ball clubs and atough St. Edmund

squad before they start district play. Bertrand stat-ed that if they can come out of the first half oftheir season with some wins and remain healthy, they should be well poised to begin district play.“The tough non-district prepares you for district,”he said.

When asked asked about his district (Elton,South Cameron, Oberlin, Merryville, andHamilton Christian), he replied, “Our district tra-ditionally has been a very tough one. Year in andyear out we are going to send at least four teamsto the playoffs. In years past, we've sent as manyas five.”

The Bearcats will have six players coming

back on their Pro “I” offense. According to coachthis offense will allow the Bearcats to “spread theball around a little.” They are bringing back a lotof experience especially in the skill positions.

The one place Bertrand feels confident aboutis his running game and believes this to be theBearcat’s best strength. The backfield will havereturning senior all district running back DerrickThomas. He rushed for 1,200 yards last seasonand is back ready to go.

With thoroughbreds in the backfield, don’tthink Basile is going to just keep it on the ground.“We are going to try and throw the ball a little bitmore than last year,” said Bertrand. Basile should

be able to do that with the help of three-year startingreceiver Jon Fournerat hauling in the ball from juniorquarterback Fabian Bellard. Bellard, starting receiverin ‘07, will start at quarterback for the Bearcats thisseason.

The team will field a solid defense this season. Thesecondary is one area the Cats will not have to worryabout defensively. Three-year starter Fabian Bellardwill be back there with a lot of help from seniors.

One of the corners will be covered by returningsenior Josh Cornerly, a first team all district standout.Cornerly lead the team with interceptions last year, and should again make his side of the field difficult topenetrate for all opposing teams.

Two-year starting senior Mason Ortego will be atlinebacker. “He is one of the leaders on defense,” saidBears coach Bertrand. Second team all district player

Fournerat will be at another linebacker position forthe Cats. “If our lineman develop, we will be okay,”said Bertrand.

Bertrand is quite confident of this year’s team, inparticular, their leadership abilities. “There are 14 sen-iors on the club and they have seen a little bit ofeverything. I feel that this will provide good leader-ship on the field.” He feels the key for his team to windistrict is to “stay healthy and have a little bit ofluck.”

With five players going both ways, health and con-ditioning is something the team will have to hope andstrive for. However, with the amount of talent theBearcats will be fielding, skill and ability will take theplace of lady luck. There is no doubt that the Bearcatsare the 5-AA team to be reckoned with.
