RECYCLE OLD NEWSPAPERS:Even if you change your bin bagtwice a day, a mysterious layer ofdirt still collects at the bottom.Use old newspapers to layer thebottom; they soak liquids and stopthe lingering stink .
USE BAKING SODA: Sprinklesome baking powder at the bot-
tom of your bin, be-fore you line it upwith a fresh trashbag.
GOT A CAT? We arenot kidding. Sprinkling
cat poopat the base of
the bin is a goodway to get rid of
rancid smells, as itabsorbs them (in
a flash). Butdon’t go hunt-
ing for cat poo out-doors during the
lockdown.
COFFEE BEANSAND LEMONSLICES: Placing
a small bowl ofcoffee beans, or
slices of lemon, at

HARD TALK... EDUCATORS LEAD THE WAY

B eing a mother to two teenagers whois also teaching high school students,I always suggest my kids and stu-
dents to avoid bragging about exotic foods, movies, makeup, etc, especially on socialmedia, and also not to succumb to any brag-ging by others that lowers one’s self-esteem.I tell them to connect with an adult if anyconversation sounds inappropriate to them.Students need to set clear boundaries onwhat they need to respond to and what not.
I t’s time to ponder on what wecan do collectively to reverse thetrend. These are some simple
dos for parents.➤➤ Listen: Curbyour instinct tooverreact towhat childrenconfide in you.➤➤ Meet theirfriends: Also, the parents. You are likelyto learn moreabout any neg-
ative activity earlier.➤➤ Don’t give a separate phone:Share yours till they become re-sponsible adults.
➤➤ Guide, don’t lecture:Concept of power dy-namics and selectivebehaviour based onyour dealing withsubordinates and ser-vants will be inte-grated into yourchild's behaviour. Sobe mindful of your
behaviour.
T he real changeshould begin fromhome which is the
first classroom. Boardsshould include sex edu-cation as an importantpart of the curriculumrather than schools con-ducting workshops. Ado-lescence is an intense pe-riod and active measuresneed to be taken to instillvalues. It’s not only parentsand teachers who need tochampion the cause ofraising responsible citi-zens, but media too.

L ocker rooms have nowturned into lobbiesfor cheap and vulgar
talks. We all have to acceptthat we are bringing up ourchildren in a sexually ex-plosive world. Parents havea great role to play here. They should not hesitate tobring these conversationsduring family get-togeth-ers. Exposing to them thegrave consequences of such
situations is one wayof protecting them.
Teachers can also guideyoungsters on how to use
social media. Teach themhow social media can in-fluence their perceptionand character.
Schools impart knowledge, skill, and ability to workand strive. But in this com-
petitive world, we have failed toinstill patience, ability to un-derstand, sympathy and empa-thy, and the feeling of securityor for that matter the art of be-ing happy. Educators and par-ents need to educate everyonein the art of being happy andhow to differentiate betweenneed and craving. Let’s culti-vate compassion and increaseresilience while building a saferand more caring world.

W here have we, aseducators andparents, fallen
short? What is it that weneed to teach our childrenat school and at home? So-cial media has become anaddiction. To handle thischallenge of the 21stcentury, we need to teachthree crucial values toour young generation –self-respect, self-disci-pline, and respect forothers. We need to engageour children in construc-tive activities constantly,to build these qualities andto make them aware ofgrievous consequencesthat any wanton behaviourmay attract.

O ur children learn more bywatching us than by lis-tening to us. Adults must
consciously stop using anyderogatory gestures or words forothers and stop gossiping aboutany sexual harassment victim orsurvivor. Let us mould our chil-dren to be thoughtful and empa-thetic individuals. Teach themfrom a young age, at home and atschool, to respect and protect eachother. It starts in the mind, let usfight it there. Once the mind hasclarity, respect for fellow humanbeings will come naturally.
