St. Louis Clinical TrialsDo you know these FACTS about Alzheimer’s disease?

• At age 65, there’s a 1 in 8 chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD)

• That risk increases to a 1 in 2 chance at age 85• There is no cure for AD…and no way to delay its symptoms

There is, however, a way to get involved in increasing the overall understanding of this condition.

The TOMMORROW study is a clinical research study seeking healthy senior participants between the ages of 65 and 83 to help us learn more about the early phase of AD.

Holiday time brings out the kid inall of us. We remember thoseincredible Christmas mornings

when we opened our presents and hope-hope-hoped the toys we wanted most wouldbe inside.

TOP SEVEN TOYSOF ALL TIME(According to “Disney Family” editors)

Mr Potato HeadKids are fascinated with

faces from birth, and Mr.Potato Head helps themlearn hand-eye coordina-tion while they make theirpotato look as funny astheir imagination desires. Iam so old that I rememberwhen you had to use a realpotato. It’s less messy now,and there are several variationson the traditional Mister.

Building BlocksThe first wooden play blocks

were invented by FredrichFroebel—the man who alsoinvented Kindergarten. So heknew a thing or two about chil-dren. Babies bang them….tod-dlers stack them and knockthem down (over and over!).Older kids imagine and designfantastical worlds and creations.

Etch a SketchOhio Art has sold more than 160 million

of them since 1960. Kids love a challenge(remember learning to write your name onthat Etch A Sketch?) and nothing is moresatisfying than building that set of stairs ora building there. And the satisfaction ofturning the screen over and making it alldisappear? Wow.

CrayonsAccording to Disney, the average kid will

break, wear down or lose over 703 crayonsby the time he’s 10. Get your toddler hisfirst “big box”—the one with the sharpen-er—and a couple of coloring books of hisown. Although I am a big “stay in the lines”person, there’s room for all kinds of creativi-ty with crayons.

Matchbox CarsIt’s all about the crashes. And sound

effects. Every child needs a handful of tinycars and a pile of dirt to play with. You cantake Matchbox cars anywhere; Grandma’s

house is less boring with cars to run overher patterned area rug. Imagination cantake these cars to roads we adults can nevertravel.

Chatter TelephoneOriginally called the “Talk-Back” phone,

Fisher Price changed its name to the morepolite “Chatter Telephone” one year after itsinvention in 1962. When they tried tochange the rotary dial to pushbutton, though, complaints rang out and theychanged it back. Not a cell phone…but somuch fun for little fingers.

Play-DohKids have squished their way through 2

billion cans of Play-Doh since 1954. Noneed to stick with snakes or balls; there aredozens of accessory sets from barber shopsto design-a-dress boutiques.

TOP SEVEN TOYSOF 2014-15

(According to major retailers andwww.businesswire.com)

FrozenEverything “Frozen”

will fly off shelves and theelves will be busy making“Frozen” figures, furniture, bedding and toys.

Teenage MutantNinja Turtles

The boys are back in abig way this year: some pre-

dict the Turtle toys will be hardto find after November.

Kinectic Sand and Art KitIt’s been called “The

Maker Movement”: parentsare encouraging more hands-on classic play with craft kitslike Crayola Paint Maker,DohVinci and Lego FusionTown Master.

Leap Band andKidizoon Smart Watch

Mimicking Mom andDad is all the rage this year, with these fit-ness bands and kids’ smart watches.

PreSchool Innovation TechnologyEven this little kids are going tech:

Imaginext DC Super Friends R/CTransforming Batbot (Wow!), DocMcStuffins Get Better Talking Mobile andGo! Go! Smart Animals Zoo ExplorersPlayset. Hope they aren’t as pricey as theirnames are long!

Characters and CollectiblesStuffed toys are always a big hit with

kids each Christmas; some popular onesthis year are: Furreal Friends, My BabyPanda, Shopkins figurines and PuppySurprise.

Active ToysMust haves this year? Zoomer Dino,

Nerf-N-Strike Elite Mega Thunderbow andHot Wheels Street Hawk Remote ControlFlying Car.

Michael: I go back about 34years with JD Blackfoot, a trueSt. Louis “Klassic” musician. In1982, he even played live in ourhome for a private party thatwas unbelievably memorable.

Michael: JD, please tell St.Louis how you created yourband, one of the St. Louis' mostunique rock bands!

JD: I recorded a three songdemo in Cleveland Ohio in1969 and was signed toMercury Records a month later.I asked some of the playersfrom the band called “Tree”that I had played with for a fewmonths if they would like tojoin me in J.D. Blackfoot andDan Waldron (drums) and JeffWhitlock (guitar) joined me atthat time. We immediatelystarted writing “The UltimateProphecy”. We added Kenny

May (bass) and Craig Fuller(guitar) a short time later. Thecover credits on “The UltimateProphecy” listed Phil Stokes asthe bass player but Kenny Mayplayed bass on the album. Theart department at Mercuryasked our manager who theplayers were and he gave themthe current roster as KennyMay was no longer in the bandby the time the album came outso his name was mistakenly leftout.

Michael: What is your connec-tion to St. Louis, in your words, with the people, the industry, and our city?

JD: The first concert I per-formed in St. Louis was on aTuesday night at the oldAmbassador Theater in 1975.Tom Rush was the guess actand Cecilio & Kapono was theopening act. The first show wasa sellout and the second showsold 800 tickets. I was amazedthat St. Louis was turning outfor sold out shows every nightthat week. I learned that nightthat St. Louis was the greatestcity for music that I had everseen, and it still is, now fortyyears later.

Michael: What is your mostmemorable experience in St.Louis?

JD: In late 1981 I came to St.Louis and KSHE to have ameeting with your Father(Shelly Grafman), who Irespectfully called “Mr. Radio”and Bob Burke, who Shelleyhad hired as the new promotionmanager at the station. It wasthe first time that I had metBob. He, Shelley and J.D.Blackfoot gutarist GeorgeMobley and I went out tolunch. I came to talk your dadinto having KSHE promote aJ.D. Blackfoot concert at theold Keil Opera House where wecould capture both “The Songof Crazy Horse” and “TheUltimate Prophecy” in front ofa live St. Louis audience.Shelley loved the idea but BobBurke, who was not yet familiarwith the KSHE, St. Louis, J.D.Blackfoot connection, asked mewho our opening act would be?I said to Bob that with ninemusicians and their equipmenton stage for a live 24 trackrecording that there would notbe room for an opening act. Ina wee bit of a condescendingmanner, Bob Burke said, “J.D.,we just had Cheap Trick, Saxonand Krokus all on the same billat the Keil and only sold 1750tickets, and I don’t want toburst your bubble, but you’renot strong enough to sellout the3900 seats at Kiel by yourself.”I looked at Shelley and said, “

all I ask you to do is toannounce the show an extramonth early so we would havetime to add an opening act ifwe needed too. KSHEannounced the concert on aFriday night and by Tuesday wehad 2200 tickets sold and byshowtime we were indeed, soldout with no opening act. Righton St. Louis and KSHE. Thataudience and that night was themost wonderful excitement thatI have ever experienced in mycareer.

Michael: How instrumentalwas St. Louis, and ShelleyGrafman, in building yourcareer and your band?

JD: KSHE was later than somein finding my music as I hadalready had two number onehits with “Who’s Nuts Alfred”and “One Time Woman”, and anumber one album with “TheUltimate Prophecy” in myhometown of Columbus, OH,as well as in countries likeGermany and Holland, anAlbum of the Year Award inNew Zealand where I recorded“The Song of Crazy Horse”,and sales in 22 other countriesby the time that KSHE reallystarted playing my music heavi-ly. The difference that made St.Louis my best market was thatKSHE, unlike any other stationhas played both, the 21 minutesof “The Ultimate Prophecy”,

and the 18 minutes of “TheSong of Crazy Horse”, at leastonce a month for almost 40years now. Shelly Grafman wasa courageous radio man andwas not afraid to take thechance of playing extremelylong cuts off albums. Shelley'slead made it possible for otherstations to take the chance aswell. Besides I made it possiblefor the jocks to put on myrecord, then put on the pot ofcoffee, call their wives, and visitthe restroom, and still havetime to finish an article inBillboard Magazine, all beforemy song was done. You’re wel-come fellows!

Michael: You have a connec-tion with the native Americancommunity, how did that comeabout?

JD: Contrary to that belief, Ihave had very little connectionwith the Native American com-munity until recently. In Juneof this year I was invited to playat the Oglala Commemorationon the Pine Ridge Reservationin South Dakota, where I metmany wonderful Oglala friends, and was honored to meet thenew President of the Oglala,Tom Poor Bear. It was my firstvisit to KILI Radio on the reser-vation and I had a great inter-view with the station managerand Commemoration leaders. On our way to the station we

followed the procession of rid-ers to the Wounded KneeCemetery in remembrance ofthe Wounded Knee massacre. The ride is held on June 25th,the anniversary of “The Battleof the Little Big Horn”. I final-ly got to visit Fort Robinson,Ne where Crazy Horse waskilled in 1877 and that was avery moving experience for me.I will now be going back tomeet with Oglala leaders to seeif “The Song of Crazy Horse”and the friends that the songhas amassed can be of help insome small way with the manyissues that confront CrazyHorse’s people.

Michael: Tell St. Louis abouthow you created “The UltimateProphecy?”

JD: I had written “TheUltimate Prophecy” and“Death’s Finale,” and DanWaldron and Jeff whitlock hadwritten “Pink Sun,” and we sataround one night talking aboutthe songs and realized that if weput the songs together theymade a complete statement. Wefinished the other two songsand that was that. Seems easynow, but it was months of hardwork back then.

Michael: Is there a scheduledstop in St. Louis in 2014?!

JD: I do an annual event I callthe “September Moon -Campfire Concert” every yearwhere the “Friends” come andcamp for the weekend andenjoy the music on Saturdaynight. This year it will be at theOkaw Valley Kampground inBrownstown, IL startingSeptember 25th, just an houreast of St. Louis. I have neveradvertised the event, we justsend out a letter to the“Friends” in the St. Louisregion and they show up withhappy faces and a little hoochand have a great time. At themoment there is no St. Louisconcert planned for the nextseveral months, but most likelyone by May of 2015. By theway Michael, every time I playa St. Louis show, I always tellthe audience how much Iappreciate your Father, ShelleyGrafman, and his KSHE Radiofor putting me in the ears of thegreatest “Friends” a performercould possibly find anywhere. And here's to your Mom,Emily, who all KSHE listenersfrom our era will rememberthat we affectionately calledFMily. My kind regards toyour family and to the oldtimers in St. Louis who stillremember how to really rock, the Sweet Meat way! Hello St.Louis, I’m J.D. Blackfoot, and Ilove you too!

Michael: Thank you JD fortaking the time to be our guestin our exclusive promotion,Rock n Roll Connection’s to St.Louis! You were and always willbe a true “St. Louis” klassic!
