Outline
• Introduction to Webster Hardness Testing Method
• Analog Webster Hardness Tester
• Digital Webster Hardness Tester
Webster Hardness Tester
• Originally produced since 1932• Applications
– Identifies heat-treated from nonheat-treated parts. – Provides correlation between a bench mounted hardness te
ster and the production line. – Segregates materials in stock. – Differentiates between soft or work-hardened material. – Identifies parts made from improper or substandard alloys. – Checks for proper heat-treatment response. – Useful in conjunction with stationary laboratory hardness te
sters. Gives a rapid 100% check on parts which would consume many man hours with slower operating test equipment.
– Can be used on assemblies that cannot be brought to the labs.

Analog Webster Hardness Tester
• Essential design elements remain unchanged for 70+ years– Indication of Webster Hardness Testing: Load spring, penetrator a
nd anvil– Pliers-like frame-and-handle structure – Mechanical device measuring the depth of dent – Dial indicator assembly
• Shortcoming– Must keep griping force when reading test value– Pointer of the dial indictor drifts during testing– Right hand use only– Testing locations limited to the direct visibility of indicator during t
esting process– Dial indicator introduces vision error– Steel penetrator easily wears– Have to write the values one-by-one in a piece of paper if testing re
cords are needed, thus not suitable for quality control, e.g., SPC

Digital Webster Hardness Tester
• The first Digital Webster Hardness Tester in the world• Design
– Advanced micro linear sensor for measuring the depth of dent– LCD displayer– Use the same type of load spring, penetrator and anvil– Remain the frame-and-handle structure
• Features– Testing value keep display after the griping force is released– Peak-value auto-catching ensures testing precision– Can be operated with either left or right hand– Can test locations where displayer is not visible directly during tes
ting process– Digital testing value display with no vision error– Super hard penetrator ensures long-life-time usage– Multiple testing modes– Memory for up to 5000 testing data– Data communication with PC
