Course Description and GoalsDaily there are reminders that time is passing. Think forexample about the last time you experienced time goingtoo fast or too slow, or how birds singing may awakenyou to the passing of winter, or how ticking causesanxiety and a sense of hurriedness, or how spotting aphoto of your childhood can remind you of the past. In this course we will investigate the many definitions of

time and the ways time makes itself evident in oureveryday lives. Well take a look at its history and learnabout how artists (and you, too) can use time both as aconcept and a structure for art making. Well discuss anartworks sense of time, and how duration can informcontent. We will explore time-based art media, includingsound/video, performance, and kinetic sculpture. In thisclass you will acquire a fundamental knowledge of lowRPM motors and basic electronics, kinetics, performance, sound recording, and time-based art documentation.

Evaluation & GradingEvaluation is determined by the commitment to, quality, andcompletion ofyour artistic work, fieldwork/research andclass participation. You will be expected to help foster the class community bytaking an active role in the discussions, thoroughly reading allassigned materials, and energetically pursuing your ownlearning through the engagement with your own art practice.

Readings and ResourcesYou will be assigned research materials in the form of readings, websites and audio works. Interesting conversationsresult from everyone coming to class prepared, thinkingcritically, and openly joining the dialogue.
