Keynote Address(Summary)President Park Joo-heon of the Korea Energy Economics Institute
Significance of the Eurasia Initiative
Eurasia is the world's largest single continent and a large market. Korean
President Park Geun-hye officially proposed the Eurasia Initiative in 2013. This is
to build a foundation for economic revitalization and job creation through
economic cooperation among Eurasian countries. This also aimed to establish a
foundation for the unification of the Korean Peninsula by having Eurasian
countries promote North Korea’s opening, thereby easing tensions between the
two Koreas.
The Eurasia Initiative suggests “One Continent,” “Creative Continent,” and
“Peaceful Continent.” I believe Korea can perform critical roles in implementing
of the Eurasia Initiative in both geopolitical and geoeconomic aspects.
The energy sector can serve as a good example of implementing the “one,
creative, and peaceful continent” initiative more than any other field.
Eurasia is home to resource-rich countries that are highly dependent on energy
exports as well as major energy-consuming nations that are heavily dependent
on energy imports. Therefore, joint development of energy resources in Eurasia
would enhance stability of energy supply and demand. And this would lead to
the establishment of a single energy and economy market, contributing to the
realization of the “One Continent.”
Also, Eurasian countries are different in economic development and industrial
