TIMELESS WondersIf you stand on Salisbury Plain at sunrise or sunset it’s easy to understand why the ancient Britons believed Stonehenge was special, and even today people from across the globe make the pilgrimage here. Outstanding exhibition galleries at the Stonehenge visitor centre set the stone circle in its historic context.
At Avebury, where the great stone circle forms a huge ring enclosing part of the village, misty mornings can be magical. The wider landscape surrounding both monuments is home to numerous other ancient structures, so here you can truly touch the past. West Kennet Long Barrow is one of Britain’s largest Stone Age burial sites, while the origins of Silbury Hill, the largest man-made mound in Europe, are lost in the mists of time.
Among Wiltshire’s other iconic sights are its White Horses carved into the rolling chalk downs.
Salisbury Cathedral offers one superlative after another and the awesome sight of its spire soaring a breathtaking 123 metres (404 feet) into the air never fails to impress. 300th Anniversary ‘CAPABILITY’ BROWN 2016 sees the 300th anniversary of the birth of master landscaper Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. At Bowood he created a flowing mix of woodlands and lawns sloping down to a lake, a fitting setting for the impressive 18th century house designed by Robert Adam. The extensive grounds at Longleat also owe their magnificence to his ground-breaking vision, while the 16th century house is an outstanding example of high Elizabethan architecture.

If you love birds and like walking by tranquil lakes then Langford Lakes is the perfect spot for you to visit. Nestled in the Wylye Valley between Salisbury and Warminster, it is an ideal place for bird watching. The four lakes provide a vital stopping off point and resident habitat for about 150 different bird species. The reserve has a relaxing atmosphere with good level paths for disabled access and you can enjoy watching wildfowl from five hides overlooking the lakes. Residents include kingfisher, water rail and gadwall. You can also get day tickets to fish on the Wylye for wild brown trout and grayling - catch and release only. The site has two centres which can be hired for children’s birthday parties, meetings and small wedding receptions. No dogs allowed on site.

The house of Thomas Bayly, a prosperous silk mercer, was rebuilt following the great fire of Marlborough in 1653. A fine timber and brick building was constructed, its interior panelled, brilliant with wall paintings and with a commanding oak staircase. Back in the centre of the village, the 12th century parish church of St John the Baptist boasts a 4,000 year old Yew tree, as old as Stonehenge itself.
Visit also the spectacular Old Wardour Castle, a fine example of a 14th century castle. It’s 10 minutes’ drive, or enjoy the walk via 5 miles of ancient footpaths and bridleways.
Tisbury is such a friendly place. People who visit rarely want to leave, so plan a visit to this most delightful corner of SW Wiltshire very soon.

WARMINSTER

Warminster is a busy, friendly market town, first settled in Saxon times. It has many fine Georgian buildings, and hosts a wide variety of independent shops, with numerous cafés, restaurants and historic inns. Market day is Friday.
There are excellent road, rail and bus links, and ample car parking. In the heart of town the Lake Pleasure Grounds provide tennis courts, a boating lake, children’s playground and skateboard park.
The Smallbrook Meadows Nature Reserve next to it is a lovely mosaic of water meadows between the Were and Wylye rivers. A short walk from the centre of town leads to the 30-mile circular walk around Salisbury Plain’s Live Firing Range.
Longleat, Center Parcs, Stourhead, Bath and Salisbury are all within easy reach. The beautiful surrounding villages and countryside provide numerous opportunities for peaceful walking, cycling and riding.

The Museum of Army Flying is based just outside Salisbury in the Hampshire countryside and tells the 100 year story of the British Army in the air. The Museum is open daily and houses over 35 fixed wing and rotary aircraft including the only complete collection of British Second World War gliders. A great day out for all the family, the Apache Café has excellent views across an active army airfield where visitors may see Apaches, Lynx and Gazelles taking off for training. The Café is also open daily and overlooks the aircraft themed play park. There is plenty of parking available and visitors are welcome to use the Café without purchasing museum admission.
