On public holidays, most people do not have to go to work or school. These holidays are New Year’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

As far back as 25,000 years ago, people had ways to keep track of the passage of time. The firstcalendarsweremarksonbones.Theyshowedhowthephasesofthemoon,fromnewmoontonew moon, divided a year into 12 time periods. This is where the word “month” comes from. This kind of calendar was known as the lunar calendar.

Later, a calendar was made based on the movement of the earth to the sun. It was called the solar calendar. Neither of these calendars measured the exact time of a year, which is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds.

A more accurate calendar, called the Julian calendar, was designed over 2,000 years ago and was used for many years. It, too, was not entirely correct.
