elcome to our first show magazine of the year and one that will see Timber Expo2013 take a significant step up to the NEC.

We have listened to our regular exhibitors and canvassed our visitors at length andbelieve the move will give the show a real extra lift. Last year was superb in its contentand scope and this year’s event will be just as focused and business-driven but the NECbrings a familiar, well trodden transport path to the registration desk so visitor footfall isexpected to increase significantly.

We also have a few new show elements to deliver as well. You can read more throughoutthis issue but the FREE Timber Talks programme is being completely overhauled byTRADA to give every delegate the opportunity to listen to an unrivalled group of timberand construction industry insiders – real life case studies of projects in action and proofthat timber is undeniably the most adaptable, attractive, structurally strong and lowcarbon mainstream building material available.

Timber Expo 2013 will also see the inclusion of the Timber Accord Pavilion. Sponsoredby Timbmet, the timber sector’s key trade associations will gather in one place for thefirst time ever, to discuss everything timber and build upon the Timber Accord agreementsigned last year. They will collaborate futher to deliver the ProTimber Summit too.

You can also connect and tap into a network of international exhibitors including aseminal pavilion hosting some timber companies from Bolivia. Again, Timber Expo is theonly event to give you the chance to connect with such a group of people in such a cost-effective and relaxed environment.

Our regular features return, including a quick round of some recent news you may havemissed plus a bumper crop of new sponsor and exhibitor profiles. And finally, do you want tojoin the Timber Expo team? We are recruiting an Event Sales Manager and it might be you.

Timber Expo is moving to a new venue for 2013 and movingup a gear in its quest to take timber to the heart of the UKconstruction industry. Welcome to the UK’s truly nationaltimber show…

With a strategic move to the BirminghamNEC, Timber Expo is ramping up for anexpanded show that will attract exhibitorsfrom the UK and expanding overseasmarkets. The NEC will also make a hugedifference to visitors with improvedtransport options and routes. Both Timber Expo and TRADA are committed topresenting a truly national show for timbertechnology and showcase what thisincredible low carbon material can do.

The show is already 75% sold out with six months to go to the show and with anexpected 180 companies exhibiting thisyear at the NEC, Timber Expo EventDirector, Loretta Sales is confident themove is an exciting one. “Timber Expomoving to the NEC in 2013 is great newsfor everybody involved in the event andwithin the timber industry. The NEC is afantastic venue and is the ideal location for the further expansion of the show.

“The transport links make it even easier forour visitors and exhibitors to get here. Infact, the airport being connected with the

venue was a key element in choosing theNEC, as the vast majority of our key targetregions are overseas exhibitors (includingAustria, Finland, Germany, Sweden,Russia, Poland and Latvia) that all havedirect flights into Birmingham International. We are working closely with the UKTI onthis and have some fantastic developmentsin store.” NEC business developmentdirector Chris Hartley also welcomed themove, saying: “The NEC has proved timeand time again that the flexibility of ourvenue and of our approach to our clientsmeans that not only can we cater forevents of all shapes and sizes, but as adedicated exhibition and conferencedestination we actually help our customers to grow their events.”

Looking ahead even further to 2014,Timber Expo will also rub shoulders withW14 – a key show for the joinery andfurniture trades – to truly bring the timberindustry together at the same place and atthe same time. So the location and scopeof this year’s event will prove to be anevolutionary move for all involved.

For everyone that exhibited and attendedTimber Expo, one thing was obvious –the 2012 event delivered on its promise to be the only place in the UK for anyoneinterested in the timber sector. It was alsogiven a new flavour, with the addition ofProTimber2012 – the timber industrysummit – that kicked off proceedings the day before the main halls opened for business. The afternoon centred on the presentation of two pieces ofcommissioned research from specialistconsultancy Lychgate. The two studies, separated by panel and audiencediscussion, examined key issues pressingthe timber sector and its wider industry perceptions.

“The event put its finger on a number ofkey points, provided plenty of facts andopinions and proved an excellent format for engaging with everyone involved,” saidTRADA’s Rupert Scott, who organised the

ProTimber Summit and Timber TalksSeminar Programme for Timber Expo.

“We look forward to working with theassociations signed up to the TimberIndustry Accord, to contribute to its futurestrategy over the next 12 months andtackle some of the amazing opportunitiestimber is creating.”

The expanded size and scope of TimberExpo was hailed as an outstandingsuccess by exhibitors and visitors alike and the buzz of the two days was a seriousstep change from 2011 with a 15%growth on visitor numbers. The TimberTalks seminar programme offered up a feast of in-depth, pan-industrypresentations held in the three bespokeseminar theatres designed and createdespecially for Timber Expo by UKSIPS, Frame Wise and Deeside Timberframe with James Jones & Sons.

Timber Expo 2012 saw an expanded exhibition space andan impressive list of exhibitors come together to promotetimber as one of the most exciting and sustainableconstruction materials on the marketplace.

Frame Wise has seen unprecedentedinterest in the business from visitors to the show. Frame Wise managing directorSimon Orrells, said: “If Timber Expo was a reflection of the appetite for sustainableand cost-effective build solutions, thenwe're in good shape to take advantage of the visitors to the house. We used theshow as an opportunity to showcase abroad range of hybrid timber wall systemsincluding our latest innovation Wise Wall.”

Constructing the Frame Wise house was a significant achievement considering thetime frame and physical constraints of theRicoh facing the erection team RegalCarpentry. Simon adds: “The success of Timber Expo was as much about theeffectiveness of our supply chain as it wasabout the timber systems we showcased. We have incredible relationships with ourkey partners and it is this through thiscollaboration that we lead the timber frameindustry to be more innovative and costfocused.” The Frame Wise partnersincluded Boise Cascade, Regal Carpentry,Cellecta, Superglass and Greenwood.

“For a show of its size Timber Expopunches well above its weight,” said

TRADA marketing manager Rupert Scott.“The seminar structures were great advertsfor timber engineering in their own rightand the seminars proved popular in termsof numbers attending and the feedback wereceived. The seminar programme was oneof the most important tools we used toattract more specifiers and contractors.”

For Timber Expo’s Event Director, LorettaSales, the 2012 show was confirmationthat the organisers have been, far sighted, diligent and conscientious in theirapproach in creating a show that reflectswhat the industry wants and give asignpost to the direction it is heading.

“Once again I was very impressed by the level of professionalism, innovation, information and design that went into theexhibitor’s stands at the show. We arecontinually striving to improve Timber Expoand ensure that every year we havesomething new and interesting foreveryone attending.”

10 TimberExpo - NEC - Birmingham - 24-25 September 2013

NEXT STOP BIRMINGHAMFor TRADA, Timber Expo 2012 delivered on its promise to be bigger and better. With a new venue, a fresh facedTimber Talks programme and an increased internationalflavour to the event, Timber Expo 2013 will be the bestyet. TRADA Marketing Manager, Rupert Scott explains…

As Henry Ford famously wrote: “Comingtogether is a beginning, keeping togetheris progress but working together issuccess.” He could have been talkingabout last year’s Timber Expo, anexceptional collaboration between TRADA,show organisers Radar Communicationsand the thousands of industryprofessionals, architects, engineers, contractors and local authorities, who all helped make the show anunprecedented success.

TRADA has never been an organisation torest on its laurels. It planned long, thoughthard and executed the plan for TimberExpo 2012 extremely well and thefeedback was excellent.

Timber Expo 2012 was certainly asuccessful exhibition for TRADA itself, which played a significant role inorganising the show. The event saw anexpanded exhibition space, an increasednumber of visitors, an expert set of TimberTalks seminars plus an impressive list ofexhibitors, all coming together to promotetimber as one of the most exciting andsustainable construction materials on themarketplace. For everyone that exhibitedand attended Timber Expo, one thing wasobvious – the 2012 event delivered on itspromise to be the only place in the UK foranyone interested in the timber sector. Itwas also given a new dimension with theaddition of ProTimber – the timber industrysummit. This will run again this year andwill take place inside the main body of theshow. Details are still being finalized and

will be available from the TRADA andTimber Expo websites accordingly.

One of the biggest changes from 2011was replacing the ‘paid for’ In Touch withTimber conference with free seminars. The ‘sold out’ sign might have beenmetaphorical, but the Timber Talks were a resounding success, with many of thesessions reduced to standing room only. One of the most popular seminars washosted by Ramboll ComputationalDesign’s Harri Lewis, who discussed how the ‘Giraffe’ pavilion, which formedTRADA’s stand, was created and thetechnology used to develop the form into an easily constructed yet dramatic structure.

The challenge TRADA has set itself for2013 is to keep delivering fresh content, innovation, more products, new ideas andprovide the latest industry information forall our visitors and exhibitors. But, likeHenry Ford, TRADA knows that workingtogether is the most efficient way tosuccess. We are keen to continue to work with trade associations, professionalbodies and its members to deliver a show to remember in 2013.

You will be seeing and hearing more about the Timber Accord at the Timber Accord Pavilion in the centre of the exhibition. This will be a unique opportunity to touch base with the sector’s mostinfluential trade bodies. For those unfamiliar with this positive step towards better collaborativeworking across the timber industry, here are its Common Goals and Objectives.

Eleven trade bodies representing the supply chain of the forestryand timber industries have signed a working agreement toimprove the competitiveness and performance across the timber sector.

The Accord was signed at the offices of the Timber TradeFederation last year by the Chief Executives of each of theAssociations. It commits each to working together in areas ofcommon interest and strategic goals, in particular to ensure thatstakeholders see a joined up, collaborative approach and thatbest use is made of available funding and resources.

Implicit in this objective is an industry focus on customer needsand a drive for continual improvement in performance.

The Accord establishes a framework and methods of workingbetween the signatories to achieve its objectives.

John White, Chief Executive of the Timber Trade Federation, said: “This Accord formalises what we have often done on aninformal basis – work together for the common good of thesector and our customers. The UK timber industry is worthroughly £10 billion a year – bigger than cement, concrete and a lot of other materials – and plays a vital role in our economy.Yet it can often seem overlooked as this is split between over7500 small firms. This Accord will help us to act as one andshow the importance of our sector to the UK economic recovery and low-carbon development.”

The Three Accord Principles:

The signatories of the UK Timber IndustriesAssociations' Accord agree to:

1. Work together on timber representation, promotion and market development activity whenever it is feasible to do so. The timber industry needs to work together in complementary and mutually supportive ways to achieve maximum impact from its resources.

2. Endorse and support to the best of their abilities any initiative by any signatory to this Accord that is in line with this objective.

3. Recognise the close relationship that each signatory has with its own community and to use these close relationships to best effect when planning and undertaking any new initiative or activity. Signatories undertake to consider the opportunities from working with others in order to share resources and costs and to extend outreach and impact.

The Signatories of the Accord are:

Iain Mcilwee, Chief Executive, British Woodworking Federation

fabric first TimberExpozine Spring 13 - www.timber-expo.co.uk22

22 TimberExpo - NEC - Birmingham - 24-25 September 2013

With rapidly increasing energy costs, the importance of energyefficiency has become a central concern to developers and propertyowners and occupiers across the UK. To deliver energy efficientbuildings the construction industry needs to develop new ways ofworking and embrace the principles of the Fabric Frist approach –this was the key message consistently delivered at the Fabric Firstevent in Birmingham earlier this month.

The well attended conference and exhibition championed this approach and brought together nearly 200 designers, architects, engineers, homebuilders and developers to gain in-depth knowledge of the latest thinking and innovations. The event was the second major collaboration between theUKTFA and UK SIP Association. UKSIPS chairman, CharlesStewart commented: “The whole principle of fabric first makes sense! Why complicate buildings with complex micro-gen renewables if you don’t need to? Building wellinsulated, airtight structures using SIPS or advanced timberframe technology addresses the energy efficiency challenge head-on.”

Eminent speakers grappled with the issues of meetingBuilding Regulations set to include Fabric Energy Efficiency(FEE), together with debating the government’s target tolower CO2 emissions by 2050.

Speaking on behalf of Ingleton Wood, architect Jon Boon’sopening shot was to challenge the name of the event! ‘It should actually be Fabric Second’ he suggested but hehastened to vindicate the comment: “To achieve maximum

energy efficiency, the industry needs to go beyond Fabric First and apply the principles right back to the planningstages. It also demands collaboration right down the supplychain to ensure components and materials work together tothe best advantage.”

With the impending changes to Part L and the 2016 ‘zerocarbon’ target looming, the choice of building envelope is vital to low carbon construction and according to speakerProfessor Nick Whitehouse of Oxford Brooks University, theother key to getting the best results from a fabric first strategyis to combine this approach with offsite construction.“Offsite prefabrication not only means improved performancein terms of energy efficiency because components andsystems are put together in a controlled factory environment,it also results in significant health and safety improvements.

Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Councilacknowledged there was: “pressure to push back the 2016zero carbon housing targets but the construction industryshould resist this, as the latest materials, technologies andtechniques present the sector with the opportunity to achievethe highest performance standards to become world leadersin designing and developing cutting edge energy efficient homes.”

The Fabric First event was hailed a great success bydelegates and exhibitors and Simon Orrells, MD of FrameWise and UKTFA vice-Chairman, and sponsor of the event, commented: “We have experienced challenging times in theconstruction sector but this event had a real ‘feel good factor’.With an impressive line-up of speakers, the event was bothinformative and inspirational. It is clear that the UK is leadingin the development of fabric first principles and technology. With our advanced Wise Wall system on display we conductedsome excellent business at the event as the forum offeredsome great networking opportunities.”

The bridges and underpasses wereessential to fulfil three remits, firstly theyhad to allow works access during creationof the infrastructure, then be suitable foraccess by the athletes and crowds duringthe Games, and finally to be re-useable inthe community Legacy phase afterwards.Being able to remove and recycle thedecking without causing any environmentalor structural damage was an importantaspect of the brief from CLM, theconsortium responsible for delivery of theGames. Also key to the brief wassustainability and the concept of flexibility –while several of the bridges were to be

permanent, they were to have temporarydecking installed alongside to increase thebridge width during August 2012, but thiswas to be removed and reused in otherguises after the event.

With its manufacture from strength-graded,FSC/PEFC-certified softwood fromsustainable sources, coupled with theeasily removable and recyclable features, ensured Q-Grip decking fulfilled the keyelements of the original design.

Hoppings Softwood Products supplied Q-Grip heavy-duty anti-slipdecking for an essential aspect of The London 2012 OlympicGames site at Stratford – decking for use on three of thefootbridges (one, which crossed the River Lee and connected thenorth and south areas, was the longest bridge onsite, at over 50m)and two underpasses.

A number of the innovative products will beshowcased at Timber Expo including KnaufAquapanel Exterior, an exterior claddingsystem which is ideal for use on timber-framed and timber-battened structures. The board is mechanically fixed to theframework and the system build up is thensuitable to receive a render, paint or furtherexternal cladding finishes.

The Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI)will be presenting twelve Bolivian timber product suppliers at Timber Expo2013. These selected suppliers of tropical timber products are ready toform long-term, profitable relationships with European partners.

The future of the wood sector lies infinished products. This is the predictionfrom CBI, the leading expert in importsfrom developing countries. “We see aclear trend in that direction amongEuropean buyers,” says CBI wood sectorexpert Marco Bijl. “More and moreEuropean companies are switching frommanufacturing to buying and selling only.”

These Bolivian suppliers were selected by experienced CBI sector experts. Thecompanies have already invested heavilyto prepare for success in Europe. Theyhave been carefully audited in terms ofquality, consistency and reliability and have completed the CBI Export CoachingProgramme. They have adapted theirorganisations and products to theEuropean market requirements, thusreducing the risk for European buyers.

All are FSC-certified or in the process ofcertification. All are experienced exportersof finished products such as gardenfurniture, decking, doors, garden tiles, components and mouldings. “This trendtowards finished products is becomingstronger every year,” says Bijl. “Thecombination of finished products andcertification is definitely going to be

a winner in the future.” The twelvecompanies presented at the CBI Pavilionwill display this winning combination. Over the past 40 years, thousands ofexporters have found their way to Europethrough CBI’s extensive programmes inexport management, quality, reliability andthe requirements necessary to succeed in the European market place Thesesuppliers have the on-going support ofCBI, as well as local organisations likeCADEX, an important Bolivian serviceprovider for Bolivian exporters.

wood solutions

This question could be answered by the inexorable growth and popularity of solid wood such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam.Gary Ramsay picks out a few key points from the second Solid WoodSolutions (SWS) event held at the National Motorcycle Museum,Birmingham recently.

Glulam is at the core of one of the mostsustainable buildings in the UK. RosiFieldson, from Simons Construction gavea brief overview of the much talked aboutM&S Cheshire Oaks project. The M&S isthe second biggest in the UK and is beinghailed as the greenest. M&S is the firstretailer to use Hemclad® panels in theexternal walls and to use 100% FSC-certified glulam timber in its roof structure.Approximately 1,400m3 of glulam wasused in the roof and first floor structuraldecking. The timber used sequestratedapprox 2000 tons of CO2 or100kgCO2/m2 of the floor area.

“It was a journey into a future world and is a strong story forsustainability,” saidRosi Fieldson. “Theuse of timber was anintegral part of creatinga climate change

resistant building and one that will be in a better place in 20 years time, than abuilding made with alternative materials.Glulam and timber is not just a materialyou buy but is a whole system of buildingand regeneration.”

Would Cheshire Oaks be such a highprofile sustainable success, involving so much community engagement, biodiversity, recycling and reuse (170 tonsof unused timber went into communityprojects such as scout huts and birdboxes) and be such a feel good story, if it had been built with concrete or steel?

Simon Smith of Smith & Wallwork, gave an alternative spin on the merits of solidwood by talking about ‘less solid woodsolutions’. His fresh perspective onwhether we should be using our onlyrenewable construction material with morecare was well received. His argument is a cogent one: CLT is a very ‘materialintensive’ product and by reducing itsweight and the amount of timber used – in a similar way to hollowcare, pre-stressedconcrete – the samedimensional strength/stability can be createdbut with less rawresource.

“Although there will be some fabricationissues with routes and holes,” said Simon.“The reduction in volume of timberrequired and ultimately reduced costs can all be streamlined through BuildingInformation Modelling (BIM) systems.”

ARE THERE ANY TRULY ICONICTIMBER BUILDINGS IN THE UK?

SolidWoodSolutions

Taking in a stunning arrayof international case

studies and presenting the best in overseas

knowledge and expertise,SWS was an opportunity

to hear some very definitereasons why glulam and

cross laminated timber are being regarded

so highly.

A common overarching theme from a UKperspective is demand. Here in the UKthat demand is steadily growing and willcontinue as more projects go live but it’sstill low compared to other parts of theworld. Overseas, solid wood is a stapleconstruction method. This was illustratedin the many case study presentationswhere a number of European projectswere covered from specialists including,Binderholz (as partner in the X-LAMAlliance), MM-Holz, Mathis, Hess Timber,Wiehag and Wehmeyer. These included:

• 105m span Ice Mall in Eilat – the largestglulam structure in the Middle East

• Bangor Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland – the largest glulam roof structure in the UK

• Canary Wharf Crossrail station – potentially the largest glulam project in the UK.

• Anaklia Pedestrian Bridge in Georgia – at 500m long, the longest timber bridge in Europe and one of the largest in the World.

• Inzell Speed Skating Stadium – the venue for the World Speed Skating Championships in 2011 including an 82.5m glulam span that is 200m long.

Looking ahead to the future, there is still a feeling that the industry needs to pulltogether on R&D and create a base for UK CLT. Transportation costs are an issueas the majority of the material is beingimported from mainland Europe and this is taking the edge of the carbon reductioncommitment. Engineered and solid woodsolutions are exciting but they all requiremore technical data and lifecycle costanalysis to confirm its merits. And ofcourse there needs to be long termdemand and raw material supply.

Still in its infancy but the use of CLT formulti-storey building will be an enormousgrowth area due to its high structuralstrength and durability. Stadthaus MurrayGrove set the pace in London butinternational projects such as those beingpioneered by Canadian architect MichaelGreen, whose 10-storey apartmentbuilding in Melbourne Australia is thetallest in the world, may soon be eclipsedby a 30-storey tower in Austria. Proofthose solid wood solutions strengths andvalue to construction should not beunderestimated.

After years of negotiations andpreparations, the European TimberRegulation (EUTR) is now in effect andcovers the whole of the EU, including theUK. For the first time ever, it will be acriminal offence to place timber and timberproducts onto the European market thatare derived from illegally harvested logs.Companies caught doing so can facestock seizures, fines and criminalprosecution.

John White, Chief Executive of the TimberTrade Federation, said: “On behalf of theentire timber industry, I would like to sayhow pleased we are that this law hascome into effect. It is a great step forwardin the fight against illegal logging and willhelp reinforce the actions and measuresthe industry has already been taking.”

To minimise the risk of products fromillegally harvested sources entering thesupply chain, the EUTR requires allcompanies placing timber products onto

the European market to have acomprehensive and robust due diligencesystem in place. Through this system, firstplacers of timber or timber products mustnow, by law, collect information about theproducts and supply chains that theycome through, assess the risk of illegallyharvested timber being present and takeappropriate mitigating actions if any risksare identified.

Members of the Timber Trade Federationhave been required to implement theselevels of due diligence since 2010 as acompulsory condition of membership. The TTF provides all members with a freedue diligence framework as well as atoolkit to help members assess andmitigate identified risks– the ResponsiblePurchasing Policy (RPP). Companiesfailing to provide satisfactory evidence ofhaving robust due diligence in place willbe expelled from membership.

Business angels are spreading their wingsinto the forestry sector, with Edinburgh-based syndicate Par Equity preparing tolaunch a £10 million timber fund. The firm, founded by Paul Atkinson in 2008,believes that at least 50 investors will pileinto the fund, which will probably feature a mix of individuals and institutions.

Par Equity has already tested the waterswith a trading partnership over the pasttwo years, which brought together 18investors to buy around £2m-worth offorestry. “This is a long-term form ofinvestment, because it can take 35 yearsfor trees to grow to the right size to beharvested. That works as a nice contrast

to some of the higher-risk but shorter-terminvestments that we make in technologycompanies,” said Atkinson.

Par Forestry Partnership has alsobenefited from grants supplied by ForestryCommission Scotland to plant 160,000Sitka spruce trees on 350 acres inAyrshire. “There’s an increasing demandfor forestry to supply timber for theconstruction industry, wood pulp forboarding and for biomass to be burned. The fund will look to raise a minimum of £5m, but I think a more realistic target is £10m.

A new study has been launched that examines thecradle-to-grave environmental impacts of wood, modified wood and aluminium-clad windows andprovides a comparison with PVC-U.

Conducted by Dr Gillian Menzies of the Institutefor Building and Urban Design, Heriot WattUniversity, Edinburgh, it is the final stage of asuite of studies that includes Service LifePlanning and Whole Life Costing. UsingSimaPro software, it provides evidence thatwood is the most sustainable choice, showingthat PVC-U windows have roughly four times theCO2e impact of wood windows and roughlytwice the impact of modified wood or aluminium-clad windows.

For the first time, specifiers are able to useauthoritative data to compare window typesacross durability, value and environmentalimpact. The study examines different exposureconditions and maintenance regimes. It finds thatwood windows made to Wood Window Alliancestandards have an expected service life ofaround 60 years – approximately twice as longas PVC-U - while modified wood and aluminium-clad windows will last even longer.

Although PVC-U is cheaper over 20 years, wood windows offer better value over 30 yearsor more, even allowing for maintenance; whilemodified wood and aluminium-clad windowsoffer better value in severe exposure conditions.
