TERMINOLOGY

The following terminology is used throughout this manual:

SWITCH BARRIERA mishandling device, preventing the handle from being turned when the window is open.

OPERATING HANDLEHandle used to hold an opening sash closed by operating the gear.

TYPICAL SASH WEIGHTSA double glazed window, glazed with 2 x 4mm panes of glass, would weigh 25kg/m2 And a triple glazed window glazed with 3 x 4mm panes of glass, or a double glazed window glazed with 2 x 6mm panes of glass would weigh 33kg/m2

CALCULATING SASH WEIGHTSTo help calculate the sash weight, the section weights are:

TS832 Sash frame = 1.48 kg/m Glazing bead = 0.20 kg/m QR33S Reinforcement = 0.53 kg/m Gearing = 0.50 kg/m

Glass weights 4/20/4 Double glazed = 20kg/m2 6/16/6 Double glazed = 30kg/m2 4/12/4/12/4 Triple glazed = 30kg/m2 4/16/4/16/4 Triple glazed = 30kg/m2

To work out the glass sizes, they are Sash Rebate - 82mm

To work the weight of different glass thickness's it can be calculated at 2.5 kg/m2 per 1mm of glass. So a unit comprising of:

6mm Glass / 12mm Cavity / 10mm GlassHas a total glass thickness of 16mm @ 2.5 kg/m2 = 40 kg/m2

CILLS AND PACKERSSurvey dimensions include cills and stacking packers. Allow for these when deriving basic dimensions for manufacturing (see figs. 5.2 & 5.3)

WELD BURN-OFFAll PVC-U cutting dimensions for welding construction include a burn-off allowance of 2.5mm per end, per weld i.e. 5mm per bar.

MECHANICAL JOINTSCutting dimensions for mechanical joints are to suit the Swish recommended cutters for end milling.

DEDUCTIONSThe tables on pages 5.3 - 5.6 show the amounts to be added to or subtracted from the basic dimensions. This will give the correct bar lengths for fabrication and the correct glass sizes allowing clearance for spacers and packing blocks.

TRANSOMS / MULLIONSSizes given for welded transom and mullion bars are for mitred bars which are then re-cut as a reverse mitre to leave a 90 degree point. Therefore the first cut is longer than the finished length (see fig. 5.4).

REINFORCEMENTReinforcement requirements are listed on page 6.1. Calculations for cutting sizes are shown in the General manual.

REINFORCEMENTREQUIREMENTSSwish Windows & Doors reinforcement must be used where applicable.

In all cases, reinforcement should be continuous and unbroken, otherwise the Swish Windows & Doors warranty will be invalidated.

Swish Windows & Doors recommended minimum reinforcement requirements are as follows:

White foiled & cream foiled profile reinforcement requirements are as for white profile.

OUTER FRAMEIf the sash rebate perimeter exceeds 4m, the top and bottom hinges must be fixed to RCM or metal reinforcement.

In all vertical outer frame members of all bay window segments.

In all members where mechanical joints are fixed to.

In the vertical outer frame members of all coupled frames.

SASHIn the head and cill of sashes, where the width exceeds 800mm.

In the jambs of sashes, where the height exceeds 800mm.

TRANSOMS / MULLIONSIn all transoms / mullions where the length exceeds 800mm.

In transoms / mullions spanning from outer frame to a transom / mullion, between opening vents, where the length exceeds 800mm.

In all members to be mechanically jointed.

Note: Reinforcing of members requiring ‘T’ or cruciform welded joints should be carried out immediately after welding. This enables the reinforcement to be pushed through to clear a path through the internal weld sprue whilst it is still soft. Where more than one joint is involved, the joints are welded and reinforcement pushed through one at a time. Prior to each subsequent weld the reinforcement should be removed until the final weld is complete.

On cruciform joints where the transom and mullion both exceed 800mm, the reinforcement should be unbroken in the shorter member. The other member should then only be reinforced in any section that exceeds 800mm.

REINFORCEMENT

6.2

INTRODUCTIONReinforcing sections are offered in either Hot Dipped Galvanised steel (HDG) sections, Extruded Aluminium Sections or SWISH WINDOWS & DOORS’s own RCM (Recycled Composite Material).Most steel sections are offered in standard 6 metre lengths or alternatively can be offered in cut lengths at 100mm increments (please refer to the product catalogue) or your co-ordinator.

PVC-U windows have many advantages over timber and metal windows, but as PVC-U has a very low structural value and a relatively high heat expansion rate the aid of reinforcing is essential in foiled or coloured windows or generally where wind loads, dead loads and imposed loads are experienced. In positions where hardware locates into our profiles, they have been locally thickened up to provide good screw anchorage. However in certain circumstances where reinforcing is required for fixing of hardware etc there are reinforcing sections available from the range.

REINFORCING-Identification and structural valuesFor details of reinforcing sections and EI values, refer to the Swish General Manual.

REINFORCING-NOTESAs a general rule the reinforcing lengths should be cut at a length equal to the EFFECTIVE LENGTH and no less than 85% of the EFFECTIVE LENGTH of the profile. (Refer to fig(i) below and fig (ii) overleaf).

*Note: In certain circumstances where hardware such as hinges etc need to locate into reinforcing, and pre-cut steel length parameters dictate, the reinforcing may have to be required to be closer to the mitre. In these circumstances, the reinforcing may exceed the general rule of 100% of the effective length, but a minimum allowance of 10mm at each end (20mm overall) must be made for the weld.

6.3

REINFORCEMENTSTANDARD RULESThe standard rules for reinforcing require no reinforcement to outer frames (unless otherwise specified). Sashes, transoms and mullions are reinforced when the span is greater than 800mm with the exception of the sash lock member. These rules apply to white profiles only.

FOILED/COLOURED PROFILESAll coloured or surface covered (foiled) profiles must be reinforced regardless of span. This is an aid to heat transfer as well as support.

LOAD BEARING APPLICATIONSIn circumstances where windows have to withstand structural loads such as wind loads, dead loads and imposed loads, structural reinforcing sections are available within the range. Details of these can be found along with their structural values within the Parts List section of this manual.Methods of determining the correct application for structural steels can be found in the Specification Guide. Alternatively for further advise on window design please contact the Technical Department.

SCREW FIXINGGenerally reinforcing should be fixed approximately 50mm in from the end of the reinforcing section and thereafter at approximately 400mm centres.To avoid fixing screw heads being visible after completion and installation of the window. Screws should be located on the outside of the outer frame members and on the inside rebates of vents and casements.Reinforcing can be fixed into the profile using an automatic drill, screw insert machine or hand held air screwdriver.The reinforcement is inserted into the profile (correctly oriented) that is supported on a guide rail on the bench.

REINFORCING CRUCIFORM WELDED TRANSOM/MULLION JOINTSThe reinforcing must be inserted as a continuous piece in the shortest Mullion or Transom member. This process is carried out just after welding the cruciform when the welded joint is still in a soft state. The mating joints of the longest Transom/Mullion members should be inserted as standard rules (refer fig (ii) overleaf).

ADJOINING OUTER FRAME MEMBERS

These can be reinforced in two ways:1. The most common way is to insert the reinforcing as separate lengths each side of the shoulder edge of the Vee notch. Refer fig (iv) below.

2. In certain specifications, the guidelines call for the reinforcing to be inserted as one continuous piece. As with the general rule for reinforcing the longest Mullion or Transom, refer fig (iii), the reinforcing is applied immediately after welding when the welded joint is still soft.

Minimum and Maximum Sizes-Notes:The dimensions stated on the charts on the following pages, are the recommended Minimum/Maximum sizes for the relevant product. If windows/doors are required to be fabricated outside of these limits, please consult the Technical Department. Standard Rules For Composite WindowsAny opening or fixed light in a frame must conform to the sizes stated in the charts on the following pages.On crucifix frames with mullions and transoms that span the total width and height, the smallest dimension (width or height must be reinforced continuously to achieve optimum performance.

Minimum & Maximum (Multi Lights and Reinforcement)The following charts indicate the recommended maximum white profile overall sizes for multi-light casement window frames, together with their appropriate steel reinforcement.Where applicable, the maximum overall sizes with their relevant steels are indicated to conform to the British Standards Kitemark (BS7412).If BS categories are required, the reader is recommended to note carefully the spans and steels stated adjacent to the kitemark symbols.

BS Kitemark ComplianceThe reader should be aware that the manufacture of a product within the maximum overall sizes stated, and reinforced where required with the recommended steels, does not signify that the product automatically complies with BS Kitemark provisions. To conform to BS Kitemark requirements the following criteria must be met.a. The manufacturing company must be approved to BS EN ISO 9000, or alternatively operate a system which conforms to those standards.b. The product must be fitted with a sealed unit manufactured to BS EN1279 (Formerly BS5713) and manufactured with current legislation.c. The quality of hardware, weather seals and gaskets fitted, must conform to approved levels, using parts as recommended by Swish Windows & Doors.d. The product must not exceed the maximum overall sizes for stated profiles.e. Where required, the profiles must be reinforced with the recommended steels.

DRAINAGEDRAINAGE SLOTSDrainage slots can be machined using a pre-set drainage machine or by hand router.

All horizontal members, except the heads of frames, vents and mechanical transoms under 1000mm wide, require water slots - 5mm wide x 25mm long.

Drainage slots should be cut in the outside chamber of profile, never in the reinforcement chamber.

Drainage slots should be staggered to avoid blow back.

Face drainage slots should be positioned appropriately for appearance purposes. They can then be concealed using a face drain cover cap.

Each section of multi-light windows must be drained separately

PRESSURE EQUALISATIONDrainage chambers on glazed-in windows should be vented at the head with a 5mm hole to aid drainage.

VENTING FOILED/COLOURED PROFILESDue to the thermal characteristics of foiled/coloured profiles (whether on Brown, Tan, cream or White base material profile) it is necessary to vent the outer chambers to encourage the dissipation of heat. This is particularly important in large profiles and assemblies e.g. Midrails, Cills and Conservatory Facades.

A 5mm diameter hole is sufficient as a venting hole, they should be positioned approximately 200mm from each corner and a maximum of 1500mm centres . The cross section drawn, shows how the venting holes integrate with the drainage slots to aid heat dissipation.

NOTE: This is not required for white+cream foiled profiles.

The joint is fixed using 4.8 x 65mm mechanical joint screws. It is then sealed with silicone, ensuring the front is not sealed to allow for drainage.

HANDLE5. Fix the handle (40mm spindle) using M5

x 50mm countersunk machine screws. Leave the handle in the open position, do not close until all the gear is fitted to the sash.

if the sash height exceeds 520mm, couple it to the back stay. Fix using countersunk 4.3mm x 25mm single deep fast threaded, gimlet pointed screws. Insert the tension buttons into the scissor stay, and twist 90 degrees to lock them in place.

GLAZINGGLASS PACKINGAll glazing should be in accordance with BS6262 and all current codes of practice.

Position the glazing packers as illustrated below.

Note: 'Toe & heel' the packers on Tilt & Turn windows, to transfer the load back to the hinge side, and ensure good operation of the window.

Packers are also placed at the locking points to give extra security from forced entry.

When openers are adjacent to fixed lights, packers are also put in the fixed light next to the locking points to prevent deflection of the transom or mullion.

GLAZING PLATFORMThe tilt turn system has a dedicated 'clip in' glazing platform (9852). This helps with glass packing and allows drainage underneath.

BEAD CUTTINGThe glazing beads have been designed to be mitred, however they can be scribed with the correct end mill cutter.

The mitred beads require suitable supports when cutting at 45 degrees to simulate their position when glazed.

Foiled beads are cut short by approximately 1mm per metre to allow for thermal movement.
