Principals Newsletter Week 8 ~ November 27th 2013

The next few weeks leading up to the end of Term 4, promises to be extremely busy so it is important to keep an eye on the up-coming events and activities as most children will be involved. Thank you for your patience during these final weeks. Apart from the huge demands of the day to day organisation of the different learning activities within the school, all staff are also involved in finalising assessment and reports, strategic and annual planning, the Annual School Report, financial roll-over and the added on department and regional training sessions that are difficult to pre-plan.

Presentation Assembly: This special assembly will be held on Tuesday the 10th of December at the Grainery in George Street. Year 6 Farewell: Again this evening will be held at Islington Baptist church hall on Thursday the 12th of December and all Year 5 and 6 children are attending. Miss Armstrong and Mrs Ireland are working hard preparing for this very special night for Year 6. All the children are asked to wear smart casual and appropriate clothes; the boys need to wear a collared shirt with no inappropriate logos. Girls need to be appropriately dressed with sensible shoes as dancing can cause twisted ankles. Further time and organisation information will be sent home.

Year 6 Uniforms/Mufti: Year 6 children will be able to wear mufti for the remainder of the year WHEN they donate their uniform to the clothing pool after Wednesday 11th of December. All uniforms can be handed in at the office.

Autographs: I am more than happy for all Year 6 children to collect their friends’ autographs before the end of the year, the only proviso, autographs cannot be collected on any uniform that is being currently worn. Autograph bears, books and uniforms brought to school in a plastic bag are all better options. This can be done in the final week of school.

Reports: Our yearly reports will be handed out Monday the 17th of December. All teachers have worked extremely hard to ensure that all data entered is a true representation of your child’s learning growth. I am sure that you will be very pleased with the comprehensive assessment information and the clear picture of your child’s progress and achievements that these reports contain. Please let us know if multiple copies need to be sent home. Don’t hesitate to contact teachers if you need any point clarified.

Outstanding Excursion Payments, School Fees: As we are entering the final few weeks of the 2013 school year I urge all parents to finalise outstanding payments for excursions, photographs, book packs and school fees. Each year, as a school we end up carrying bad debts and then we have difficulty trying to retrieve late payments. This really impacts on our capacity to assist new and needy families each year. Please help us end the year in the black! Enrolments 2014: To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff for 2014, I need all parents enrolling children K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office ASAP. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2014, we can then contact them and include them on our numbers for next year. Thank you to all the parents who are promoting our school in such a positive way and encouraging all local families to enrol in their local school.

If you are not returning next year, or know of new enrolments or going on holidays and returning after school commences in 2014 please see Margaret at the office. PEANUTS/Anaphylactic Reaction: Tighes Hill Public School is becoming a nut free zone from Term 4 onwards. The number of children with allergies to different food products and substances is growing. At this school we have had students with severe (life threatening) reaction to eggs and peanuts enrolled. Each Monday we have a Kindy Club student who has such an allergy to peanuts. To maximise the wellbeing and safety for all students, parents are asked not to pack peanut butter or nut sandwiches for your children and to make sure that you are vigilant in reading labels of all pre-packaged foods. Please let’s work together to provide a safe environment for all students.

Newsletter: In Term 4 the newsletter as discussed at the P&C meetings and school assemblies became paper free and is no longer printed and distributed in a paper copy. We ask that parents and carers access the newsletter from the following: • school website • school app • classroom blogs • supply the office with an email address that it can be sent to

A small number of printed copies will be available for collection at the office for those who cannot access the newsletter by these means. This will be a saving to the school and a much more environmentally sound method of delivery.

School App: Thank you to all of our families who have downloaded our new school app. The feedback has been amazing and we look forward to continuing to develop new and innovative ways to best utilise it. The app gives you the ability to instantly access newsletters without going to the website, or to send in a sick note for your child without having to write a paper note! Download it to your smartphone or tablet by going to either the Apple App store or Android Google Play Market and search for our school name. Once you have found it press install or download. One of the new ways we will be using our app is to send push notifications to communicate travel time during excursions. School App Update Are you not receiving push notifications on your iphone? If you have updated your software to IOS7 then you will need to uninstall the THPS App and reinstall. Make sure when you open the App you accept ‘push notifications’! P&C: The final P& C meeting will be held on Monday the 9th of December at 6.00pm. Come along and help celebrate 2013 achievements and plan for 2014.

CHRISTMAS

CAROLS

CONCERT

Thursday 5 December Sausage sizzle from 4:15 Performance starts at 5pm On the grass, under the trees. Canteen Meeting Monday 9th December 5:30pm In the staff room P&C Meeting Monday 9th December 6pm In the staff room PRESENTATION DAY

Tuesday 10th December

Dear Families,

We are very quickly approaching the end of 2013

and what a fantastic year it’s been.

This year saw our P&C committee grow substantially, and as

a result, we were able to accomplish some great events,

which raised significant extra funds for the school.

The Wine Tasting “Meet and greet”, the Movie Fundraiser,

and the Election “Mini Fete” were all great fun and couldn’t

have happened without the hard work of our fantastic

volunteers.

These events were a success, because of the wonderful

vibrant school community we are all a part of. Collectively,

we really are a talented, diverse and colorful bunch, and I

am excited at what we are going to achieve together in

2014. An informal “Brainstorming” session will be happening

early next year, so please come along and share your big,

small and crazy ideas! New P&C members are always

welcome.

To everyone who has helped in any way, by your effort,

your positivity and enthusiasm THANK YOU!

To Tony Selwood and his fantastic teaching and support

team, we thank you for a great year.

The P&C wishes you all a Very Happy Christmas,

and wonderful break with your families.

MURAL PROJECT Since the start of term 4, students &

teachers have been working on designs for

2 new mural pieces for the school. House

mascots will be painted on the storage

shed & toilets joining up with the garden

mural plus a feature mural with school crest

& local native animal characters near the

handball courts. Local mural designer &

street artist Jess Coglan will be completing

the layout & color design this week with

sketching up & painting starting shortly

after. Any creative parents & students who

would like to be involved in painting the

murals can contact Dale on 0401 592 323

to get info on painting days/times.

Canteen News As the term comes to an end, the canteen will be

winding down, so if your kids are using the

canteen over the next few weeks, please

understand that some items may be unavailable.

In the final week of school, anyone wanting to

help out is welcome to help with the big annual

defrost and clean up!

The last canteen meeting of the year will be on

Monday 9th December. Please come along if you

would like to contribute.

A BIG THANKYOU to all the canteen volunteers for

all of your wonderful help in 2013.

Merry Christmas, and see you all in 2014.
