Tighes Hill Public School Newsletter No. 15
Principal’s Report
Thank you to all the children who have found their summer
school hats this week. Well done. Our “No Hat no Play” hard line
is part of our Sun Safe policy and is in place to protect our
children throughout the warmer months. Please help your child
remember to wear their school hat, to school, each day.
As this is the last newsletter for this term I want to thank all our
parents and carers for their fantastic support in all areas of
school. We really value having you work closely with us to
maximise learning outcomes for the children. I particularly would
like to thank all the parents who have taken the positive steps
towards becoming involved in the many areas of our school from
P&C members, school gardeners, classroom helpers, venue
drivers and assisting in all the varied functions and activities that
our school engages in each day. We have a wonderful number of
parents and carers who participate in all our activities thank you!
Your involvement makes a difference for all children and staff
and our school grounds reflect this as well. I want to encourage
and invite more to join in.
As the holidays finally arrive I hope that you have a restful and
safe break and enjoy just being with your children. I also hope
that the holidays will finally see the end of the great number of
colds and flus that have been around and that attendance in term
4 will be exceptional for all children. This is also a great time for
all children to be treated for head lice.
I also really want to thank my staff and all the children for their
extremely hard work this term, their great resilience and flexibility
in being able to step up to any challenge and their total
commitment to learning and wellbeing. Everyone has worked
very hard at achieving outcomes and overcoming challenges.

The performance was terrific and I was so proud to be in the
audience and watch the Tighes Hill choir perform. This school
opportunity was excellently organised by Miss Tregillgas.
Congratulations everyone.

Tell Them From Me - Parent Survey
This term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell
Them From Me suite of surveys on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions
about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s
experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and
practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable
feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey
will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be
conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary,
your responses are very much appreciated.
To complete the survey, click on the link below or scan the QR code.

Office Times
The school office opens at 8.30am each morning and closes at 3.30pm. Outside of these operating hours
the office cannot process financial activities or administer first aid treatment in the sick bay. Access to the
sick bay outside of the office operating hours is not permitted. Thank you for supporting the school with
this process.
PEANUTS/Anaphylactic reaction reminder
The number of children at Tighes Hill Public School with allergies to different food products and
substances is growing. At this school we have students with severe (life threatening) reactions to peanuts
and all tree nuts enrolled. To maximise the wellbeing and safety for all students, parents are asked not to
pack peanut butter sandwiches or nut products for your children and to make sure that you are vigilant in
reading labels of all pre-packaged foods. Please let’s work together to provide a safe environment for all
students.
Book Week Celebrations
Thank you to all parents and friends of Tighes Hill PS for coming along to our Book Week parade and
supporting the staff and students. The costumes were amazing and the students had a great time. A big
thank you for the support that was given to the book fair and all the purchases and donations to the school
library.

Great Aussie Bush Camp
Well done to all of our Year 5/6 students for their great work at camp last week. We had so much fun
taking part in archery, team building initiatives, canoeing, high ropes, raft building and more! To see more
photos, visit our Facebook page or Instagram.
1st round of finals against Newcastle East PS 2nd round of finals against Ashtonfield PS
Our debating Year this year has been full of achievements and not only did they win
our pool competition but they progressed into the second round of finals.
Unfortunately, even though it was an extremely close battle, we did not come out
victorious against Ashtonfield and our competitive debating season is now over. Our
team did exceptionally well this year due to their commitment to training and
enthusiasm to learn and try new things to better their debating skills. They will become
mentors to our Year 5 team next term as they continue their training to fill the shoes of
those who leave for high school. It has been a joy to work with such a hard working
group of people!
Library shut down for Term 3
A huge thank your to all the Tighes Hill community for supporting and getting involved in
celebrating Book week with us! This year we made over 3,000 dollars and we have been
able to keep close to $700 as our commission for sales. That money will be invested back
into our library! We also received over $500 dollars worth of donations! Thank you to all
those who came along and purchased.
Please remember that there will be no borrowing this week as we prepare for school
holidays. Books that are overdue or are not needed throughout the holiday break are
asked to be returned to the library before Friday.
Class library days are as follows:
Mondays: KH and K1N Tuesdays: OC, 6B, 2MB, 3D, 3S
Wednesdays: 1E, 2W and KD Thursdays: 4S, 4R, 5T and 5/6W Fridays: 1C
Remember at Tighes Hill we have a ‘no bag no borrow policy’
Take a look at these exciting new arrivals!
Scholastic Book Club:
Orders for term 3 are now closed. Orders for the last issue will arrive throughout this
final week before holidays. Catalogues are handed out twice a term. Online ordering
through loop and the new catalogue is available online — this is the faster more efficient
way to order as these orders always arrive first!

Happy Reading!
Meg Derricott - Tighes Hill PS librarian
Students in years 5 and 6 have been busy planning our
2019 Year 5/6 Fair for Friday 27th September, which is our major fundraising event for the year and a fun day for all
students to take part in.
Last year’s fair was a great success and this year is shaping up to be just as fun with lots of exciting stalls being organised by our creative students.
All children wishing to purchase from the various stalls are asked to bring in their money prior to the fair as no money will be used on the day at any of
the stalls. Children will be given tokens (Fair money) in exchange for their money which will then be used to make purchases at the stalls. Money will be collected
from classes by student leaders every day leading up to the Fair.
You can help make this day a success by donating cakes,
lollies, drinks, pizza ingredients, ice cream cones and any bits and pieces for trash and treasure. Any donations can be brought in to 5/6’s room.
Don’t forget - Fair day is also a mufti day! You can wear out of uniform, comfortable clothing and closed-in shoes.
