Cat Care Author: Carly J. Bacon

A Summary by Linnea C.

Cats can be great household companions. Nutrition is an important part of cat care. While fruits and veggies do human good, they aren't very good for cats. Many foods that people eat can harm your cat. Cats are meat eaters, so a high protein diet is important. Owners should buy a high quality cat food that has the vitamins and nutrients their cat needs. According to cat experts, adult cats should eat lower calorie food to avoid becoming overweight. Did you know that adult cats are lactose intolerant and should never be given milk? Water is important for cats, as it is for people. This is because water makes up 80 percent of most their bodies. If a cat is dehydrated, it can have problems with circulation, digestion, and removing waste from its body. You have to keep fresh water available for your cat at all times. Did you also know that the way cats keep their fur clean is by licking themselves? Cats’ tongues help them remove dirt and dead fur. Cats spread natural oils, called sebum, through their fur. This helps its coat stay shiny, waterproof, and tangle free. When cats cover their fur with their saliva, their body temperatures drop as the saliva evaporates. Cats should be brushed once a week to help reduce shedding and prevent hair from falling off. If your cat has long hair, you'll need to brush it everyday. Cats are a real big responsibility, but like any other pet, they can be-come beloved members of a family. If you don’t own a cat, you should con-sider one as a pet.

Tips on How to Stay Safe During an Earthquake By: Salvador M.

If you are inside a building: 1.Stay where you are until the shaking stops. 2.Drop down onto your hands and knees so the earth-quake doesn’t knock you down. 3.Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from fall-ing debris. 4.Hold on to any sturdy covering so you can move with it until the shaking stops. If you are outside: 1.Stay there. 2.Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. 3.Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. (The greatest dan-ger exists directly outside buildings, at exits, and alongside exterior walls.) If you are in a moving vehicle: 1.Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping under or near buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires. 2. Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake. If you trapped under debri: 1.Do not match a light. You may set debris around you on fire. 2.Try not to move. 3.Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. 4.Tap hard on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Make noise. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amount of dust. Other things to remember: 1.Have an emergency plan. 2.Identify the safest places to drop cover and hold on during an earth-quake in your home. 3.Have an emergency kit. 4.Before helping others, make sure you are safe first.

AZTECS PROJECT in Mr. Burchmore’s Classes by: Mixtli M.

This goal of the project was to create a floating garden, a chinampa, with details to represent the crops that the Aztecs grew. We used the following materials:

Clay

Paint

CardboardPopsicle sticks

Fake plants Background: When Cortez discovered the Aztecs Empire in the year 1519 he found 200,000 people living on an island in the middle of a lake. Tenochtitlan, now Mexi-co City was the biggest and best-fed city in the world, and this fortress city was completely surrounded by water. To feed their enormous population, the Aztecs in-geniously built chinampas, or floating gardens, to convert the marshy wetlands of lake into farmlands. These floating gardens were a masterpiece of engineering. The floating gardens were rafts. The rafts were anchored to the bottom of the lake, and they piled vegetation and reeds on top of the raft to help provide good soil and circulation of air. Each garden was 300 long by 30 feet wide. Each garden was lined on all sides by canals to allow canoes to pass with workers and materi-als. In the floating garden, Aztecs grew crops like chili peppers, corn, tomatoes, beans, lime, cashews, potatoes, peanuts, chocolate avocados, and squash. The principal crop for the Aztecs was corn. It was difficult to get to the food since the gardens were floating in marshy water. To solve this, the Aztecs built mud and stone walls around each floating garden. They planted trees at each corner to se-cure the garden. Chinampas were a great way to grow crops, as well as a good way to filter drinking water.

My Latino Hero by Hernan N. First place winner of the Oxnard School District Cesar Chavez Writing Competition “We Latinos are a large population, and we're growing fast. But, it doesn't do us any good if we don't get educated so we can help the next generation. Love education. Work hard. Don't give up. It's all about learning, all about pride, all about life.” These are the words of Rueben Martinez, my Latino hero.

Rueben Martinez is my hero for various reasons. First, his goal is to motivate not only Spanish speakers to read, but the whole world. He believes that everyone should have an education. Secondly, he also believes that everyone should read because reading not only is fun, inspiring, motivating, but can make you smarter and take you places that you may have never imagined existed.

Rueben Martinez was born in Miami, Arizona in a small mining town in 1940, from a Latin family. He loved reading and writing, but his parents didn't want him to read or write. They wanted him to go work in the mines. In high school, he made the difficult decision of leaving his family to go to Southern California in LA, so he would not have to work in the mines.

During high school, Martinez found out he had a talent for reading and writing. He decided to use his writing skills to become a published writer and to motivate people to read. But, without relatives or money, he struggled for a while. Some time later, he found a job at McDaniels Market as a bagger. Shortly after, he found more lucrative work at Bethlehem Steel. After his boss at Bethlehem Steel saw his skills at a ten inch mil, he was promoted, and his wages doubled.

Three months later, he started working at a barber shop named Hill Street Barbers, which in-spired him to open his own shop in 1968. In 1975, Martinez opened a second shop in Santa Ana. He put up books in the Santa Ana barber shop and started selling them. Some never got returned, such as a copy of a signed first edition of Anthony Quinn memoir. Eventually, he made his Santa Ana barber shop into a bookstore, which was named Librería Martinez. In this way, he carried on his goal of moti-vating people to read. During this time, he also got married and had three children.

Rueben Martinez was very determined. He worked in his bookstore 14 hours a day with no breaks, for three to four years, continuing his life-long goal of inspiring people. His bookstore became a success, so he opened three more bookstores. After publishing many books and writing, he became a published writer, a speaker, and a college faculty member. He did all this simultaneously, as he contin-ued to work hard for education and his love of reading.

He also started teaching and motivating the world even further. When Martinez was invited to join the faculty at Chapman University, even before he answered, he was presented with a signed first edi-tion of Anthony Quinn memoir. He also received awards such as the MacArthur Fellowship in 2004, the Genius Grant, and commendations from the U.S. Congress, for his entrepreneurial and Social Activism.

Rueben Martinez has impacted me and the world in many ways. His main goal in life is to inspire

people to see the wonders of reading and learning. He has motivated me to read and learn. More im-portant, from him I have learned that reading is not just a necessity, but it is also a privilege. We learn new things, try new things, and are motivated and inspired to get out of our comfort zone and to go that extra mile with any of our goals.

As I move up in my student career, I will always remember his words, “When you work hard, you

build, you plan, and you dream, there's no obstacle that you can't overcome.” Every time I feel down, doubt myself, or when I pick up a book, and I will be reminded that Latinos like me and Rueben Mar-tinez can make a huge difference in the world.

Traveling to Silver Lake and Silver Lake Reservoir by: Javier R.

Silver Lake was originally named Ivanhoe in the 1900s, by a resident from Scotland. People stroll through Silver Lake because it has some of the best coffee shops, bou-tiques and eateries. At Silver Lake, there is a restaurant where different types of food are sold. They also have a small aquarium with different types of fish and a campground. Silver Lake Reservoir is the best lake in Los Angeles. The lake is circled by a boardwalk, and there are picnic ta-bles with benches all over. Also, the reservoir is in a resi-dential and commercial neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles. Silver Lake Reservoir also has walking and jogging paths. It's a great and beautiful place to visit. My family and I enjoy our time there every time we visit.

How to Dye a Spiral T-Shirt Adapted from wendolonia.com

Step 1: Gather Supplies. You will need to get dyes of your choice (the more

different color dyes you get the better it will

look!), rubber bands, and gloves. You will

also need garbage bags to prevent your

working area from getting messy and zip-

lock bags to put your shirts in while the dye

sets in. Also, you will need a t-shirt to dye,

preferably white.

Step 2: Fold your shirt. Grab the t-shirt

and twist in a spiral pattern because that’s

the most fun pattern to make. Make sure to

pinch the shirt somewhere in the middle

and start twisting the shirt around it.

Keep twisting until the whole shirt has been twisted into a disk. You should

end up with a flat, twisty disc. It should look kind of like a hurricane. Next,

carefully wrap rubber bands around the shirt. Put the rubber bands on so

they intersect over the center of the disc. You should use at least three bands,

which will divide the disc up into 6 parts.

Step 3: Dye your shirt. Go outside and put down the garbage bags on the ar-

ea you will be working. Next, put on your gloves and prepare your dyes.

Then, start squirting the dyes on the shirt. This is the fun part! To make the

spiral pattern, you need to squirt the between the rubber bands. It’s ok if the

dye crosses the lines a little and mixes — that will make your shirt more in-

teresting.

Step 4: Let the dye sit. Once your shirts are all dyed, put them in plastic

bags to let the dyes set. You want them to remain damp, so sealing them in

ziplock bags works well.

Step 5: Rinse your shirt and untie it. After the dyes have set up

over night (or for 6-8 hours), rinse the shirt until the water

runs clear.

Mrs. Johnson’s Art classes with their tie dye groovy shirts.

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology.

Electronic technology includes devices such as cell phones, computer, and tab-

lets. The cyberbullying can also occur through social media sites, text messag-

es, chat rooms, and web sites.

Cyberbullying involves two people: the cyberbully and the victim. The

victim does not always know the cyberbully, as he/she can hide anonymously.

It often takes place online in social networks and via text messaging with pho-

to/images sent all over the digital space. Sometimes cyberbullying has a direct

impact on health and school behavior. It can also lead to post-traumatic stress

and depression.

Other effects of cyberbullying can directly intervene with school. The vic-

tim can:

-Feel lonely, sad, and have low self-esteem.

-Miss, skip or drop out of school.

-Receive poor grades.

-Use alcohol and drugs.

If you know someone who is a victim of cyberbullying, reach out and tell

an adult immediately.

This information was found in stopbullying.com and kidshealth.com.

An Interview with Mrs. McDaniels By: Jennyfer R., Cindy H., and Lupe V.

1. How did you feel on your first day as a principal of Kamala ? I know I was nerv-ous because I didn't want anything to go wrong, and I wanted every student to be safe . I remember the parents asking me were the classes were, and I was trying very hard to remember which building was which. 2. What do you think is the most important contribution you have made to Ka-mala ? My most important contributions include the amount of technology we’ve gotten while I have been here. In addition, I feel that it was important to have same leader during the transition from K-6 school to a K-8 school. It was critical to support the parents, students, and teachers in the process. Being here during that big change was a very important contribution to the Kamala commu-nity. 3. What has been the happiest surprise as a principal of Kamala? I would say watching students come back from high school and thanking their teachers for preparing them for high school. Also, one surprise I had here at Kamala was when one of the parents, who was one of my students when I was a classroom teacher, had their child attend Kamala. 4. What have been the biggest challenges you have encountered so far at Kama-la? “The only thing that is constant is change.” I would have to say the transition from a K-6 school to a K-8 school. Also, when I came here there were no Prome-thean boards. Now there is technology everywhere. 5. What will you miss most about Kamala?

I’m going to miss watching 8th graders going to their field trips, ceremonies, and I will miss the relationship with teachers, parents, and students. I will miss everything about Kamala! 6. Any parting thought, message, or quote? Thank you to the teachers for all their hard work and the students for giving 100 percent. I would like to be invit-ed to all their college graduations. Please keep in touch. Finally, thank you every-one for trusting me with running your school.

Principal’s Farewell Message

Dear Kamala,

I was not expecting to say goodbye at the end of this school year, but as I learned at Kamala,

the only constant is change. For eight years, I watched many of you grow, from Kindergarten

students leaving your parents at the gate for the first time, to middle school students wanting

to spend all your time with your friends.

As all of our Tigers continue their education, my wish is that each one of you is college ready

when you leave Kamala. Every college field trip and conversation you had, and will continue to

have with your teachers, has and will have prepared you for college. These talks are meant to

help you realize the education you can earn! When I say I cannot wait to be invited to your col-

lege graduation, I truly mean it.

As we move forward in life, always remember, “Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!”
