Having spent the last two months in Europe I wish to thank Graham Stelling for stepping in and looking after the shop during my away. Graham does an enormous amount for
the Club and along with myself we should all be grateful for the commitment he shows to the operation of our Club.
8 wins on the trot unfortunately broken by a 6 point loss to our friends at Red Hill for football and a wonderful start from a rejuvenated A, B C, D & U17 Netball contingent is a great start to the season and we should all be proud of the men and women who play each week for our Club.
From Lyn’s and my travels we experienced an amazing perhaps salutary lesson in just how lucky our young people are to be able to play sport and live in a free and caring country.
We’re travelling from Casablanca to Tangiers in Morocco for an overnight stay before we cross the mouth of the Mediterranean back to Spain to continue our journey. Tangiers we are joined by a police escort as there are a number of African refugees who have tried to get under tour buses and hitch a ride to Europe to escape the misery they have been through in their respective countries.
Morning and the bus is released from a compound. again surrounded by police we are taken to the ferry dock where we undergo the usual Customs and Passport formalities. The bus is inspected and we walk on the ferry walking off in Spain after some 40 minutes at sea. again with another bus inspection and we are on our way to Gibraltar where we have a 90 minute lunch stop and then it’s on to the Costa Del Sol some 300 kilometres away.
It’s now late in the afternoon and we stop in a hill tgrab a coffee before we head to our hotel for the night.this stop a noise is heard under the floor of the bus and it’s quickly established that someone is stuck on the top of the gearbox unable to get out. The police are called and aftmuch coaxing a 15 year old boy is prisedhas been unscrewed in the floor of the bus. travelled all the way from Tangiers where he has managed to squirrel himself away unable to get out he’s now dehydrated and in a lot of discomfort.
How desperate must he have been. Only the clothes he was wearing, no shoes and no money. What sort of life must he have lived. Apparently these kids are encouraged by their parents to do this. Now in police custody and on his way back to Morocco his future is bleaker than ever.
Without eulogizing, we often complain about our lot but just give a thought to those that don’t have the safety and freedoms that we enjoy as young and older people in a country where the prospect of a bright futuhands.
I look forward to celebrating a great season with all of you as we continue our march to the football & netball finals.
Go Tiges Chris

From Coach Rikki Johnson
Round 5 v Chelsea saw us travelling away to Chelsea for a top of the table clash with both sides being undefeated. Right from
was clear that it was going to be a physical contest. To the boys’ credit, they continued to stick to the task and channel their aggression towards the contest. From early on in the second quarter our run and polish allowed us to put a space on Chelsea and eventually run away with a 7 goal win to remain undefeated and hand Chelsea their first loss of the year. Best players for the day were Sam Guerts, Billy Quigley Shaun Clarke.
Round 6 v Hastings: In recent times Hastings have no doubt had the wood on us handing us loss early last year which still stings to this day. For this reason we knew we had to bring our best to get the job done. Right from the outset our skills and run looked to worry Hastings. With a really even spread of contributions across the board, we once again showed that we have depth and quality across every line. In the end we were able to secure a quality 38 point win and extend our winning streak to 6. Best players on the day were Terry Wheeler, Jack Gipp Quigley
Round 7 v Pearcedale: On the road this week up to Pearcedale we were expecting a tight contest against a side that has pushed us in the past. Unfortunately we ran into an injury decimated Pearcedale side filled with kids. To their credit they fought hard but our skand fitness went to another level in the second half leaving them in our wake and cruising to a 111 point win.Best on the day were Terry Wheeler, Jack Gipp and Billy Geurts.
Round 8 v Langwarrin: In what has been labelled the Artico/Milward Cup, we knew that Langy would be coming ready for a physical contest with plenty of feeling. Right from the onset it was clear Langwarrin had concocted a game plan to try our stifle our run and attack and to their credit for most of the day it worked. Definitely not the prettiest game from a spectators view point but I was really pleased that we never panicked or shied away from the contest and we never looked to be beaten, even when the score drew closer. In the end we ran out 13 point winners with Quigley, Shaun Clarke and Andy Howison
Round 9 v Red Hill: Round 9 and we were up the Hill to take on the Hillmen for the Bluey Holmes Shield. Unfortunately for us, this day was not our day and our winning streak would ultimately come to an end in athrilling 6 point loss going right down to the wire. Red Hill played a really smart brand of footy on their big ground and unfortunately for us, we looked tired and failed to run out our style and structures for the full four quarters. Although it was a tough loss, I almost feel like it was the loss we needed to have to refocus the group and get back to working hard on the track and refining our game plan. Best players on the day were Ben Holmes (6 goals), Matt Price and

Wow! Tiger time again. How six rounds of football have flown by.
Round 3 v Karingaldisappointing day at Dromana with a shortage of playersalthough we fought hard all dayBest players being: Jae, Savage, J. Hunter
Round 5 v Chelsea at Chelsea, was a major turning point in our season. With the playing group understanding that their finals chances were slipping away. We had to put in a four quarter effort, and playing some players in different posiWe rolled the dice, and came away from Chelsea with the four points. Best players were: Jae, Sammy, Oliver
Round 6 v Hastings at Dromana. Players started to have faith in one another and started to understand the game plan. The boys played really good football and were feeding the forwards with nice entries. The forwards didn’t let the team down kicking true with eight goals straight, finishing all the hard work. Heading into the last quarter the boys held their nerve and won their third game for the year and more importantly their first at home. Levelling the ledger with three wins and three loses. Best on the day were: Jae, JB, Gill
Round 7 v Pearcedale at Pearcedale. We took on Pearcedale knowing that they whad to stick to our game plan and not get complacent. They responded really well, kicking six goals to one, having us run out 80 point winners, giving us a big percentage boost. Best on the day: Carter, Sammy, J. Quigley
Round 8 v Langwarrin at Dromana. Heading into the game versus Langwarrin, we needed to put up a good performance at home. The boys knew this and went out with their minds on the job from the first bounce. The zofootball was very good. There were times in the game when Langwarrin had too many bruise free clearances from the stoppages, but the boys held strong and ran over the top, giving the Dromana crowd a good contest. Best players: Leyden, Martin, J Quigley
Round 9 v Red Hill at Red Hill was always going to be a hard game to win. On a massive ground the boys had their zone/press working very well, with Redtime clearing the ball out of their down by not converting our forward pressure into scoreboard pressure. Red Hill seemed to find easy goals when they got over our press. We were able to control the game up until ten minutes left in the third quarter, when Redtop. At three quarter time I asked the boys to play man on man football, backing them in to win one on one. The boys answered, shutting Red Hill down and kicking away, giving us our 5th win in a row. By Peter Ball Round 5 v
Chelsea away:
This was a must win game for the
boys. At 1 win and 3 losses, the focus all
week was to maintain and change the direction of the footy. Our
quick ball movement inside 50 was
the best all season and the forwards did the rest. Best
Players: A full team effort.
Round 6 v Hastings at home: Every week the U19’s set targets.
Today was to win our first home game for the year, (big tick).
Second, was to keep Hastings
under 40 points, (big tick again). Hastings came hard at our lads and
it took nearly 3 quarters before we got on top. In the end we ran
away with the valuable 4 points. Best Players: Wade Chamberlain,
Tim Stepanavicius and Kayne Gipp
Round 7 v Pearcedale away: With both sides at 3 wins and 3
losses today’s game was to see
which side would stay in touch with the top 6 teams. Our tactics were
simple. Pressure Pearcedale for 4 quarters and make them pay on
the scoreboard. Well done again guys! Best Players: Liam Trew,
Sam Cashin and Kayne Gipp
Round 8 v Langwarrin at home: Our chance today to play a
top side and we failed the test.
Langy had 5 goals on the board before we blinked. Our young men
tried hard in the 2nd quarter to be just 3 goals down at half time. But
Langwarrin was way too good for
us and put the game beyond our reach. Best Players: Sam Childs,
Jordan Derrick and Blake Mead
Found 9 v Red Hill away:
Undermanned and outclassed the
Unders tried to go with the undefeated Red Hill. On a positive
note our boys didn’t self destruct. Red Hill were just way too good.
Best players: Sam Childs, Sam
Schwarz and Ben Tovey
Keep the faith because next week
against Crib Point we should have 6 or 7 players back, so we look
forward to a lot better display from
the team.

grade. Hard fought, but our girls came away with the win. B grade lost, but the score didn't reflect the battle on the court, with A grade also going
down. Some great matches considering we were quite a few players down
this week due to representative commitments.
Round 9 v Red Hill
Never our favourite courts to play on, but a good rivalry round with our
counter-parts up the hill. We almost took a clean sweep. U17s came up against a very polished Red Hill outfit and although we matched them early

VALE- BETTY PLUNKET - A TRIBUTE FROM DFNC
The club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Life Member and resolute supporter Betty Plunket2018. Betty’s funeral service, which was held on the 18
th May at ‘Rosebud Funerals’, was
well attended by family, friends and members of the Dromana football and cricket clubs.
Betty (born: 1933) was a most significantof the football and cricket clubs; and she was a dedicated and efficient volunteer over many years. George and Betty Plunket arrived in Dromana in the late 1970’s; and Betty’s involvement with the cricket and football clubs for some 35 years included such roles as: treasurer, committee member, fund raising, bar attendant, social organizer & of course, as is welltimekeeper for the football club and official scorer for the DCC.
Betty and George’s unswerving belief in the two clubs was highlighted in the 1980’s when they forwarded a loan of $10, 000 to backing in the building of the Social Room. Eric Oakes, who was the driving force in the fund raising campaign for the new rooms, and Betty and George Plunket deserve the perpetual gratitude of all those who enjoy the facilities of the room today. Note: $ 10,000 in the 1980’s approximately equates to $42,000 in 2018.
Betty was granted Life Membership of both clubs and she will always be remembered for her lasting contribution to sport at Pier Street. All members, players and supporters of DFNC forward their deepest sympathies to the Plunket Family and again reiterate their appreciation to the generosity and dedication of Betty Plunket. May 2nd 2018. [email protected] Hello Roger, It was bought to my attention that the Dromana Football club has a Historian andplayers. My father Harry James Wiseman played for Dromana and was in the winning team in 1931. Harry was born 4th January 1912 at Benalla, Victoria. His father was Samuel Wiseman, a School teacher and mother Grace. He taught at numSchool for a good number of years. The family had a connection with Red Hill, as Harry’s Great Grandfather James Wiseman was a pioneer of Red Hill and worked as a Blacksmith. Harry’s GrandfatherHarry went to Mailors Flat Primary School (near Warrnambool) then went to Frankston High School. Harry then attended Burnley Agricultural College, before becoming an Apprentice Nurseryman. Harry was a keen sportsman and played football for Dromana Football Club. He was in the winning 1931 team. I have in my possession his football medal for that year. (medal is shown below).
Dad loved his sport. At the end of 1931 he movfarming property near Caron in the wheat belt. He was in the Caron Football Club Premier team in 1933. I have several team photos of him there. He also loved tennis. His brother Les also played for the club. When WW2 broke out he joined the R.A.A.F. He married Winifred. After the war Leslie bought the land his father had owned and developed an apple orchard, which he worked for most of his life.
