TIGER TALK VOLUME XXIII Issue 4 November 2017 Dear Parents, Thank you for attending your child’s activities throughout the school year. The combined effort of our staff, parents and community members results in a meaningful learning environment for our students. Attending activities allows our staff and students the opportunity to share many of the exciting learning experiences that take place at school. It also gives you an opportunity to show your child the importance of education and what it means to you. We always encourage visitations. As a reminder, we would like to encourage visitation to our school during the school day. Please remember that we ask all visitors to enter the building through the front main entrance. Upon entering the building please stop by the office to sign in and obtain a visitors pass. We are constantly looking at ways to keep our building as secure as possible and your assistance is greatly appreciated. Also, posted in this newsletter are the Emergency Procedures for Paxton Consolidated Schools. Please read and be informed of procedures to follow in case of an emergency. The school district staff with the help of local law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel will continue to conduct safety drills throughout the school year. Some of these drills will require parental participation. Sincerely yours, Del F. Dack Superintendent Emergency Procedures for Paxton Schools: The Paxton School District has developed a Response Plan that is designed to minimize danger to anyone occupying our school should an emergency occur. Our main objective is to attend to the health and welfare of your child/children in the event of a crisis. In most emergencies, your child/children will remain and be cared for at the school he/she attends. In the rare event of an emergency affecting your child’s school that prohibits re-entry to the building (such as a broken gas or water main, a fire, or a toxic chemical spill), students will be moved to an alternate site. An alternate dismissal time will be determined, as appropriate, and announced. We ask that you follow this procedure if you hear of any school emergency: 1. TURN ON YOUR RADIO OR TELEVISION. We will keep the media informed of an emergency. 2. PLEASE DO NOT TELEPHONE THE SCHOOL. We have limited phone lines. These MUST be used to respond to the emergency. 3. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE SCHOOL UNLESS REQUESTED TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD AT SCHOOL. Any emergency involving your child’s school may mean emergency vehicles and workers must be able to get to the building. If the emergency necessitates relocation of staff and students, you will be informed via the media. We appreciate your help and support to make our school a safe place for everyone. Happy Thanksgiving!

Emergency Procedures for Paxton Schools:

The Paxton School District has developed a Response Plan that is designed to minimize danger to anyone occupying our school should an emergency occur.

We ask that you follow this procedure if you hear of any school emergency:

SAVE THE DATE

Family Night “MyFuture’sSoBright

IGottaWearShades”For Students in Grades K-2

November 6, 2017 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Dear K-2 Elementary Parents,

Please join us on November 6, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. for our first family night of the school year. We hope you can join us for a night of food and fun as we hit the beach and explore different career choices.

Please plan to arrive a little early as registration will begin at 5:45 p.m. Students are encouraged to come to the beach dressed as their desired career choice.

Each student, together with his/her parent/guardian will participate in fun activities and games; each student will receive a new book just for attending. We hope that each student in grades K-2 will be accompanied by a parent/guardian throughout the evening. If you have more than one child in grades K-2, and only one parent can attend, we invite you to bring a relative or family friend who would enjoy the activities with your child.

Mrs. Kuenning and Mrs. Brott will provide childcare for children who are under 5 years of age and those students in grades 3-5, while students in grades K-2 and their adult companions participate in the family literacy activities!

Please don’t hesitate to call the school if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you on November 6!

Welcome to Counselor’s Corner Be the reason someone smiles today.

“Tough times never last, but tough people do”.

SOCIAL MEDIA 101 In today's society, social media is the most efficient way to stay connected. The many platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, allow users to get a peek into others' lives through written pieces as well as pictures. Social media applications (apps) can also be used to encourage online learning for students in schools. However, there are downsides to technology and how it is used amongst teenagers today. The best course of action is to have a conversation with your children and about their safety online and be in the know of their app usage and purposes. It would also be beneficial to set guidelines for their role online and privacy settings to prevent concerns from arising in the future. The apps are readily available on all smartphones and can pose an issue for students' self-esteem and their image to people who come in contact with them, both personally and online. Here are some resources about apps that are out there and why it is important to stay connected in a safe and smart way: "The 12 Apps That Every Parent of a Teen Should Know About" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-12-apps-that-every-parent-of-a-teen-should-know-about_us_56c34e49e4b0c3c55052a6ba "Apps Stirring Up Trouble in Schools" https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/apps-stirring-up-trouble-in-schools The Smart Girl Society https://www.smartgirlsociety.org/resources/parents -Offers videos and explanations of popular apps and the opportunity to ask questions about each app

ACT WILL BE THE STATE TEST FOR THE JUNIORS Each 11th grader in the state of Nebraska will be taking the ACT this spring. This ACT that Paxton Juniors will take here at Paxton Schools on April 19, 2017 will be provided free of charge. This ACT will be treated the same as any other ACT and students will have the opportunity to send their scores to colleges free.

How to help your student prepare to take the ACT – There are multiple ways to help your child prepare for the Act. Taking the actual test multiple times is recommended for all students. 2. The juniors now have free access to ACT Prep On-line. This could benefit them greatly in preparing for the ACT. 3. Being engaged in every class every day is the BEST way to prepare for the ACT.

Seniors – Apply for Financial Aid for College - Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. FAFSA is used to to apply for grants, loans, scholarships and work-study jobs. The FAFSA is used by almost all colleges to award non-federal student financial aid and scholarships. Both the student and the parents will need to apply for a PIN number. You will find the FAFSA application at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

WHAT exactly is college? College can mean almost any type of education beyond high school (sometimes called “postsecondary education”). This can include: College/University, Community College, Trade School, Military, Apprenticeship, or Technical Training

WHY would I want to go to college? In a few years, nearly 70% of jobs in Nebraska will require education beyond high school*. So college could get you a better job – and a career you enjoy. And…you should get better pay! Did you know that graduates from a Nebraska four-year college earn more than $15,000 more than a high school graduate?
