News BriefsNAHS raises money for animal shelter

National Art Honor Society collected over $500 for South Texas Animal Adoption Re­source a local No­Kill animal shelter.

NAHS is gearing up for it’s annual 12 hour Art­A­Thon, 12 hours of non­stop art at Kerr High. The date with be from 7 PM January 14, to 7 AM January 15. This will raise money for Club activities, donations (last year’s donation went to Project Haiti) and art supplies.Combined choirs to perform ‘Requiem’

The combined varsity choirs of Elsik, Hastings, Kerr and Taylor High Schools will be presenting the major choral work of Mozart’s Requiem at Taylor High School Theatre.

Pre­sale tickets are on sale through Dec. 2 for $5; tickets at the door are $7.

Eight students took part in the Region Choir Clinic and Concert November 12 and 13. They were: in the Women’s Choir, Ne­sha Smith­Bray; in the Honor Choir, Kristi Arroyo, Jennifer Nguyen, Kit Chan, Gia Tran, Kevin Chu, Keiren Velez and Melvin Williams.

Three students passed the District Au­dition for the Texas All-State Choir: Nam Nguyen, Alexis Jaramillo and Nesha Smith-Bray.Art student in final 10 for Culture Shapers

Senior Amy Mai has been named one of the top competitors in the Culture Shapers Visual Arts competition.

Mai will learn December 8 at the Culture Shapers banquet whether she has won one of the cash prizes, which could be as much as $5,000.

Kerr students submitted 68 entries in the competition. Mai entered the Electron­ic Media category.Recycling raises funds

Efforts continue to raise funds for the newspaper and yearbook staffs through the collection of materials for recycling.

The program accepts used ink jet and toner cartridges from home and commer­cial printers; cell phones (all brands); and digital consumer electronics, including DVD players, laptops, digital still camer­as, digital video cameras and video game players. Both non­functioning and func­tioning electronics can be recycled.

The effort raises a small but important portion of the $4,500 newspaper budget and $22,000 yearbook budget each year, while keeping items out of landfills and re­turning them to use.

Sales of the 2011 yearbook on campus will end December 17, and books may not be available at all after that date.

The award­winning yearbook has faced decreasing sales in the last few years, ac­cording to yearbook adviser Laura Negri.

In order to trim costs, the yearbook staff will only order enough books to cover the sales made on campus by the December deadline and online before January 15,

2011. Yearbooks can be ordered online during

the winter break at the yearbook website at http://www.yearbookforever.com Books may be purchased with cash or check from any yearbook staff member or in the Journalism Room 302; or they may be paid for online using cash or check.

Yearbook personal and business ads can also be ordered on campus or online by the January deadline.
