A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR SANDY KESSINGER

Our 60th Anniversary

Did you know … that on Sunday, January 15, 1956, Pastor Alvin Kuhn presided over the first worship service

at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer?

Pastor Kuhn was the mission developer and first pastor of Redeemer. For four years the services were held in

a Methodist church building off of Georgetown Pike. Later the congregation moved to its current location on

Chain Bridge Road.

Redeemer started with 84 charter members and today our congregation has approximately 1,200 members.

Thanks be to God for our witness to the community and to the world!

______________________________________________________________________________

Our Anniversary Committee has been hard at work to let us know that we are indeed celebrating 60 years of

ministry here in this place. Countless hours have been spent in planning the 60-day celebration which begins

on Sunday, April 10, during our normal worship times. Here are some things to expect –

A banner will be placed outside of the church so the community can celebrate with us.

60 of our members shared their memories of Redeemer and that information is being put in booklet form

for everyone to enjoy. Copies will be available on April 10.

A new cookbook is being created with favorite recipes from our members.

The outreach project is already underway as we collect 60 purses filled with toiletries to be presented to the

women at N Street Village.

A memorial tree will be planted on our property to demonstrate our desire to be here for many, many years

to come.

Buttons and lapel pins will be available as a remembrance of our festivities.

And … we will worship with joy in our hearts!

April 10 – Our worship services will initiate the celebration as we offer special music and special prayers for

the church and our ministry. The announcements will include significant events from each of the six decades

that we have been in existence. A reception will follow each service and I promise we will be well fed physi-

cally and spiritually on this day.

May 22 – Bishop Richard Graham will preach on this Sunday. We are active partners with our synod and this

will be a wonderful opportunity for us to welcome the bishop to our congregation. The members of the Anni-

versary Committee will assist with worship on this Sunday. Please thank them for all of their hard work (their

names are listed at the end of my article)!

June 5 – We will hold our regular worship services in the morning and then gather at 4 pm for the Celebration

Service. We will begin in the Crossroads to dedicate the new work of art that will be placed on the white wall

as you enter the church. We will then process into the church for the worship service. We are inviting all the

former pastors, associate pastors, and vicars who served at Redeemer. We are also inviting sons and daughters

of the congregation (those who were members of Redeemer and then became pastors or professional lay lead-

ers in the church). We also hope you will extend an invitation to friends and members who are now in other

locations and who might enjoy the reunion.

For the celebration service Pastor Jeff Wilson will preach. A new musical piece will be dedicated in memory

of Don Cackler – a piece that is based on his favorite Bible verse from Micah 6:8 – And what does the Lord

require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

The worship will be glorious! We will fill the sanctuary with our deep gratitude to God for the many blessings

that has been bestowed upon Redeemer. And after the worship we will dine in Parents’ Hall where we will be

able to continue the celebration with a fine cooked meal and time to reconnect with all of our guests.

And one of the best parts is that in these 60 days of celebration we have set aside a dedicated time to read the

Bible together and to pray …

Starting on Wednesday evening, April 20, at 7:15 pm to 8:30 pm we will read together the Book of Acts and

hear how the early church began its life after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And as we read we

will reflect on our own church and our own lives and at the end of each session we will take time to pray for

the church, for our members, and for any concerns we have at the time. These Wednesday night gatherings

will last through May 18.

Come and celebrate! And please thank the members of the Anniversary Committee for doing a wonderful,

wonderful job on our behalf –

Tracy Graves – Chairperson

Joyce Clarke

Marti Hopler

Larry and Roberta Pittman

Lynn Ann Mullane

I wonder what the 75th Anniversary Committee will say about our church when we have our next celebration!

What does God have in store for us?

Yours in Christ – Pastor Sandy Kessinger

Council Discussion

Paul Lettow will collaborate with Carolyn Ubben to brainstorm about ideas for a plaque, and location for the US Flag

and Christian Flag.

Elizabeth Carroll proposed we revive Vacation Bible School at Redeemer, and some discussion about space availability,

volunteers, and interest were discussed. It was left that Marlon Yearwood would be contacted to see if he had any sug-

gestions, and that Elizabeth would send out a survey to the congregation to gather more information.

Council priorities were discussed for 2016, they stand as follows:

Prayerfully search for the additional pastoral staff position

Concentrating on our youth and young families

Concentrating on our older people

Provide leadership in the celebration of the Redeemer’s 60th anniversary

Strengthen our stewardship program to enhance time, talent , and financial offerings, and alignment of those offer-

ings with our requirements, while continuing to grow the stewardship team.

Provide encouragement and guidance in the selection and installation of the stained glass windows and Crossroads

artwork.

Continue emphasis on welcoming, outreach, and social concerns programs.

Continue progress on enhanced use of social media outlets, website, Facebook, etc.

Reinvigorate the Endowment Fund Team, and the Congregational Life Committee.

Begin laying the foundation for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation

Emphasize Faith development within the congregation

New Business

Steve Lancaster suggested we come up with more than just a mission statement for Redeemer. More like an action state-

ment of where we are going as a congregation. As a discussion point, if you won the lottery how would you invest it

into the mission of Redeemer?

Mickey Skelton brought up the church is not registering with Google maps.

Closing

Council’s next meeting date is April 11th, 2016. The next executive committee meeting will be held March 30th, 2016.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:35p.m. with the Lord’s Prayer.

LSS Adoption and Foster Care Program, the Refugee Resettlement Program, Caregiv-

er Support, and Youth Haven Camps and Retreats.

Thousands of children and families look for compassion each year. With LSS, we can CARE for our neigh-

bors in need. We can GIVE kindness, love, and support. Together, we can GROW the number of those who

are able to rebuild their lives and find peace.

Join us for breakfast honoring nearly 100 years of LSS service in our communities. Hear inspiring, personal

ket and other items. LSS will give these kits to newly relocated refugee families as they settle in our area.

And another big thanks to all of you in our congregation who donated dishes, silverware, and table linens for

Social Concerns and Time to Fly Foundation

Time To Fly Foundation is a faith based 501c3 non-profit, dedicated to

helping abused women and children regain their God given worth,

break the generational cycle of dating/domestic abuse and strengthen

the family unit. Founded in 2001, the vision is to see countless “walking

wounded” lives restored from the devastation of dating and domestic

abuse globally. Domestic abuse prevention and intervention training services and onsite childcare are

provided FREE of charge to participants.

Time to Fly Foundation’s team of dedicated volunteers is trained to provide emotional and spiritual

support for women who are seriously ready to begin the healing process. The goal is to have each

woman not only successfully complete the extensive 10-week course, but to discover the unique pur-

pose of her life while bringing value to her community as a productive citizen. It offers a holistic pro-

gram designed to meet spiritual, emotional and practical needs including: practical life-skills workshops on

financial management, nutrition, parenting, computer training, and access to referral networks for housing,

childcare and employment assistance.

RENDER UNTO CAESAR

“Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But he perceived their craftiness and said to them, “Show me a

denarius. Whose head and whose title does it bear?” They said, “The emperor’s.” He said to them, “Then give to the em-

peror the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”–Luke 20:22-25

The tax-filing deadline is right around the corner: Do you have your denarius ready?

For many of us, tax time is not our favorite time of the year. We probably don’t think too much about whether we should

pay taxes, but rather whether we have filled out the correct forms, claimed the appropriate deductions and gotten every-

thing in on time. In contrast, in biblical times, paying taxes was a topic of concern as people wondered whether paying

taxes called into question their allegiance to God. There was also not much love for tax collectors, who were known to

cheat the people.

It’s within this environment that the Gospels tell us about an encounter Jesus had on the topic of taxes. His enemies were

trying to trick him by asking a question that would make him look bad. No matter how he responded, his answer would

anger one group or another.

In the end, he confounded them by posing a question of his own: Whose likeness, or image, is on the coin? It’s a great

question to ask about the coin; and it’s an even better question to ask ourselves. In whose likeness, or image, are we

made? In Genesis chapter 1 we read that we are made in the image and likeness of God. Whatever we do as upstanding

American citizens—pay taxes, become a public servant, contribute to our communities as concerned neighbors—we do

as people made in the image of God.

And so we give ourselves to the One in whose image we are made, and from that foundation we live out our lives.
