Profile – Don J. Wilson, Woodworking Shop Activity LeaderMeet Don Wilson. With his talent for woodworking and great sense of humour, Don is a natural fit to be our Volunteer Activity Leader for the Woodworking Shop at SHOAL. The Shop attracts a number of members who want to have a work area to use tools and complete projects involving wood. And Don is our man who keeps the shop running smoothly and well organized.

From the time he married in 1959, woodworking has been his main hobby, creating various pieces of early American style furniture. “My early training in cabinet making was invaluable in this hobby and since then I have always had a workshop,” says Don.Born in Windsor, then raised and schooled in London, Ontario, Don first studied at HB Beal Technical, majoring in Cabinet Making. He left school at age 16, worked at odd jobs and at age 17 joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for the next 5 years. “After my discharge I came to Sarnia Ontario and started working in the chemical industry at Dow Chemicals and became a pipefitter,” explains Don.

After marrying, he moved to Terrance Bay, Ontario but left there to return to Sarnia in 1965 in order to work in the industrial construction field. He retired in 1993 after working as a General Superintendent. He found his way to Sidney in 2014 and, much to our luck, was introduced to SHOAL Centre a year later. Once he was signed up as a Woodworking Shop member, Don’s enthusiasm quickly made an impression and he was asked to take over the role of shop supervisor. “I have enjoyed impart-ing my knowledge and learning different aspects of the hobby from other members in the last year,” says our Activity Leader, and we are most fortunate to be learning from him, too.

The SHOAL Woodworking Shop is open M-F, 8:30am – 9pm. Men and women wishing to join receive an orientation with Don, sign a liability waiver, and pay a $30 shop fee valid for one year. Woodworking Shop members must have a current SHOAL membership ($46/year). If you are interested in joining the shop, call us to set up an appointment 250-656-5537.

Goodness – it’s February already! Lots continues to happen for Food Services at SHOAL with our busy Dining Room, our cosy and busy Tuck Shop, and catering for the many meetings we host here at the Centre. If you are not familiar with our catering services, you can check our catering flyer online on the Beacon website (www.beaconcs.ca) or come by the centre for a brochure. We are capable of hosting events from breakfast meetings to large buffet dinners, receptions, memorials and family anniversaries or special gatherings. Buffets (minimum of 15 required) can be customized to meet your needs.

February is a special month since it’s all about hearts – how we extend our hearts to others in so many different ways. A favourite way is by sharing a meal, a tea-time or a bag of popcorn over a movie. This month we always like to feature some special heart cookies from the Tuck Shop to remind us of that most important energy – love! During Valentine’s Week, February 14 – 17 (don’t forget Tuck Shop is closed Family Day, February 13) we will feature heart-shaped cookies as a special treat. Bring your friend or loved one to the Centre for a cuppa and a cookie.

This month SHOAL hosts close to 300 Beacon Community Services employees at their Staff Appreciation Night. Did you know that BCS has been in the Peninsula community for some 43 years, and has since spread far and wide throughout the Victoria area. Many staff have been recognized over the years for their service, from 5 years to 35 years. SHOAL staff are all glad we have the opportunity to work with them and serve them on this special night.

While we mentioned last month about our new pricing, here is the information again. We have introduced a Senior Portion Meal, discontinuing the old terms of Half and Full Portions. Few patrons eat Full Portion meals, so we discontinued this pricing. Meal Cards reflect the former price of cash meals: $7 for Lunch (15 meals for $105) and $10 for Dinner ($15 meals for $150), saving patrons $1.00 since the price for meals not purchased with a meal card is now $8 for Lunch and $11 for Dinner. We urge regular patrons who eat in the Tides at SHOAL Dining Room to purchase meal cards for this great discount. All cards purchased previously at the former price will be honoured until they expire.

SHOAL Activity Centre Members’ BirthdaysIf you are a current SHOAL Activity Member, you can drop by on the day of your birthday to receive a gift certificate for a free hot beverage and a cookie or scone at the Tuck Shop. Come during the week preceding a Saturday or Sunday if you have a weekend birthday. We would love to acknowledge your special day!

Spotlight On:Sidney Single Seniors 55+

7

There’s a hidden gem in Sidney for seniors who are alone and looking for friendship and regular social interaction with others in the community. They are Beacon Community Services’ Sidney Single Seniors 55 Plus (SSS 55+) and, in a month that’s all about hearts, it seems appropriate to salute this wonderful group.

“We are not a dating group,” says Colleen Schayes, president of the group. “Our purpose is to provide a social network for seniors on their own, regardless of whether they are single, widowed, or have a partner who is in care. It’s important for seniors not to become isolated once a spouse is gone or in care, to feel included in their community and to have enjoyable activities that engage them.”

But there is more than just a social component to SSS 55+. Monthly meetings at SHOAL Centre often feature guest speakers providing important resources and information covering a wide range of important topics, like how to be safe from scams to being prepared for an earthquake emergency.

The group began in 2003 under the guiding hand of Ivy Buchanan, who networked with Beacon’s previous Volunteer Services Coordinator Kathy Mason to get the group off the ground. Initially, the group met once a month in the meeting room of Beacon’s Wakefield Manor and, when Beacon began operating SHOAL Centre, the Sidney Single Seniors relocated with them.

Over time the group has grown to about 90 members. There’s a variety of activities that they participate in, including a walking group, drop-in coffee klatches three times a week, monthly lunches or dinners, golf (putting) at The Ridge, bowling, and frequent bus trips to the Chemainus Dinner Theatre for their buffet luncheon and show. Their next trip is scheduled for March 1 to see “Pride and Prejudice” at an all-inclusive cost of only $84, open to members and non-members alike.

Every autumn, the group takes on the responsibility of organizing the bake sale part of the annual Christmas Craft Fair on the second Saturday of November. “They are amazing,” says Anna Hudson, Activity Coordinator at SHOAL. “We wouldn’t be able to offer this part of the Fair if it was not for the Sidney Single Seniors, and every year baking sales increase with the great donations of baking from the group.” Those who are not able to donate baking often give a

cash donation. This year, proceeds from the bake sale alone topped $1,000 – a record amount since the group first began operating the sale. Long-time member Gillian Else has been instrumental in promoting the Christmas Craft Fair, taking charge of poster distribution, calls for donations, and planning out the volunteer shifts for the day. We are grateful to them for all they do for us.

The group has a formal executive, a small operating budget that comes from a modest membership fee to join the group, and produces a handout for members that detail all their activities. There’s always a mention about the group on the Volunteer page of the monthly TideLines. If you are interested in joining this active and lively group, call Gillian Else at 250-656-3971. Join Sidney Single Seniors and keep your heart connected through friendship and community!
