Santa Claus came to the City of New Castle on a big red fire truck for all the good girls and boys at the first annual

Christmas for the KidsMore than 100 kids and their families were treated to a fun-filled day of crafts, music, Christmas goodies and a visit from the big man himself. Each child left with party favors, candies and a present from Santa, all of which was donated by our corporate city limit businesses and partners: BJs, Home Depot, New Castle Farmer’s Market, Pathmark, Staples, Canada Dry, Five Below, Zenith Corp., Porto-Fino’s Restaurant, Walgreens, Dollar General, United Loan, Gregory Automotive, Cactus Wren Gallery, Caroline’s,

Cobblestone Gifts, Jessop’s Tavern with Sysco, Delaware Vets 5K Toys for Tots, and St. Anthony’s Club.

The families were entertained with popular Christmas music by the talented DJ Paul Freeberry. The kids made crafts and Christmas cards to send to our troops overseas. Photographs were taken with Santa

Claus and his helper elf.

Hotdogs, Porto-Fino’s pizza and lots of Christmas goodies were all provided by our local sponsors. In attendance for the event from City Government were Council President Linda Ratchford, Councilman Albert Vannucci, Councilman Ted Megginson and City Manager William Barthel. Numerous New Castle City Police officers, Public Works, Municipal Services and City employees along with many Goodwill Fire Company members were also in attendance.

Some of us who were children during the show's run, from 1947 to 1960, crave the memories the happy-go-lucky puppet inspires and have caused the value of Howdy Doody objects to spiral in value. A Howdy Doody marionette such originally sold in the early 1950s for about $3.49; in 1995, one of the original Howdy Doody marionettes sold for $23,000.

Was this under your tree?

➊ The Howdy Doody we remember has freckles. How many freckles did he originally have?➋ Who held the mortgage to Howdy's home town?➌ The Flub-A-Dub was a conglomeration consisting of how many different animals?➍ How many different Howdy Doody puppets were there in the original run of the show from 1947 to 1960?
