PIRATES!by Rick Dandes

They ruled the seven seas back in the 1600s and 1700s and even today are plundering sea vessels in international waters. They are pirates. From movies and books to real life, pirates fascinate people endlessly and probably always will. Tid-bits walks the plank this week, in honor of Na-tional Talk Like a Pirate Day observed on Sep-tember 19. • Although Hollywood pirates, such as Jack

Sparrow’s friends, like to grumble “arrr” or “arrrrgh” frequently, real pirates were not known to do so. Hollywood actor Robert Newton, who played Long John Silver in the 1950s, had a regional accent from the Cotswolds district of England where they like to roll the “r” a bit. However, your average real pirate did not.

• Pirates may have thrown men overboard, but no one was ever known to have “walked the plank.” Again, this one is a Hollywood myth.

• Lady Ching Shih of China became one of the most powerful pirates to have ever sailed the ocean blue. She commanded one of the most formidable pirate fleets in all of Asia during the early 1800s, with hundreds of ships under her command.

Q. Why do pirates always carry a bar of soap?

A. So if they’re shipwrecked, they can wash themselves to shore.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“How to Train Your Dragon” (PG) -- The reason Dreamworks’ animated films don’t reach the same level of quality as Pixar’s is that all too often, the humor is derived from lame pop-culture refer-ences rather than from the characters’ personalities or their situation. In “How to Train Your Dragon,” Dreamworks has finally gotten it right and made an animated family film that is funny and heartwarming, with the same timeless, classic feel we get when watching, say, “Toy Story” or “Monsters, Inc.”The film centers around a Viking boy named Hiccup who would rather tinker with his inventions than join his fellow Vikings in fighting the dragons that at-tack their village. One day Hiccup, using one of his inventions, accidentally brings down a young dragon. Instead of killing the beast, he befriends it and names it Toothless. Because humans and dragons

are supposed to be mortal enemies, and this is a family film, it is mandatory that everyone must learn A Valuable Lesson About Friendship and Family.I really liked this movie. The flying scenes are breathtaking, the voice acting by Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara and Craig Fer-guson is well-done, and the film zips along at a jaunty pace. Check it out.

“The Hangover” (Extreme Edition) (R) -- For cryin’ out loud, this movie has more versions than “Blade Runner.” This “Extreme Edition” is the third release of the film this year. What’s differ-ent? Nothing. It’s the same movie you saw in the theater, only this time it includes a 28-page book of racy photos from Stu’s camera and the “miss-ing wedding album,” more outtakes and a gag reel and some other junk thrown in to separate rubes from their cash. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the movie was funny, but this DVD release is nothing but a shameless grab for more cash.

DOG OF THE WEEK“Jonah Hex” (PG-13) -- Not only is “Jonah Hex” the worst movie of the year, but at 72 minutes, it’s also the briefest (thankfully). Josh Brolin stars as the titular Hex, a cowboy with a mutilated face

who’s out to avenge the brutal murder of his family -- until President Grant recruits him to hunt down John Malkovich, an evil dude lookin’ to destroy the U.S. Capitol with a super weapon invented by Eli Whitney. For a comic-book movie that’s barely an hour long, you’d expect it to be wall-to-wall action. No dice. It’s mostly grizzled dudes standing around talking. BUT, despite this being boring for the most part, there is one scene that is actually uber-cool. Jonah Hex has the power to resurrect the dead. So in one scene, he kills a dude, immediately resurrects the bad guy and then PUNCHES HIM SO HARD THE BAD GUY EXPLODES INTO A BAJILLION WEE FLAMES. The movie is garbage, but that scene is totally badass.

Q: I love the Starz original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” and I am eager to know if the series will return for a second season. I know that the show’s star, Andy Whitfield, has been battling cancer, but I heard he was on the mend. -- Theresa F., Bowling Green, OhioA: Andy had been making terrific progress. His non-Hodgkin Lym-phoma was in remission, he was back in training for “Spartacus,” and in an appearance at July’s San Diego Comic-Con, he said that he felt better than ever. However, Andy and Starz recently announced that

the actor had to leave the series to immediately resume aggressive treatment for the recurrence of his cancer.Andy said in a statement: “It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as ‘Spartacus’ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey.” A representative for the network said the future of the series will be discussed at a later date. Starz still plans to air the show’s prequel, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” in January 2010. It focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua, and stars returning cast members John Hannah and Lucy Lawless.***Q: My husband and I are big fans of the new cop show “The Good Guys.” It’s such a refreshing change from all the same old ones. Can you please tell us if it will be picked up for another season? -- Linda M., via e-mailA: The buddy cop show, which premiered in May on Fox, has been picked up for a second season, and has acquired fall-season status. You can catch it on Friday nights (rather than Mondays). I’m sure that its stars, Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks, thank you for your support.***Q: David Cross is one of my favorite comedians. What has he been up to lately? -- Paul F., via e-mailA: The 46-year-old funnyman has brought his original comedy series, “The Increasingly Poor Deci-sions of Todd Margaret,” to the Independent Film Channel, where it airs Friday nights. This hilari-ous show follows the entertaining misadventures of an American pathological liar (David) as he bluffs his way into a senior marketing job in the London office for an energy drink called Thunder-Muscle. The always-hilarious Will Arnett plays his boss. To read my fun interview with David, go to www.celebrityextraonline.com.***Q: Who are your early picks to take home the mirror-ball trophy on “Dancing With the Stars”? -- Harriet F., Tacoma, Wash.A: Hands-down, my early favorites are Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey. Jennifer dances like she has the spirit of Patrick Swayze guiding her, and Kyle has youthful exuberance and showmanship on his side. I can’t wait to see more from them.

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):

• Texas leads the Unites States in the number of beef cattle, while Wisconsin is the leader in dairy cattle. The country with the most cattle is India, where the cow is considered sacred.

• The average dairy cow gives about 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime. That’s an annual output of about 1,600 gallons per cow.

• Although we in North America drink mostly cow’s milk, worldwide, more people drink goat’s milk than cow’s.

• Do you speak “chicken?” These feathered creatures have been the inspiration for all kinds of idioms in our language, such as “chicken-hearted” and “chicken-livered” to denote cowardliness. We “walk on eggshells” when we proceed cautiously. Our “nest egg” is money saved for the future. An “egghead” is overly intellectual, and a person is seen as a “good egg” or a “bad egg.” If you’ve done something that made you look foolish, you have “egg on your face.” We’ve all “run around like a chicken with its head cut off,” “counted our chickens before they’re hatched,” and been advised not to “put all our eggs in one basket.” Many offices have a “pecking order,” and some men claim to have been “hen-pecked” by a “biddy.”

• There are more chickens in the world than any

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):

other bird. That little red growth that hangs beneath a chicken’s beak is called a wattle. It’s red because it has a rich supply of blood.

• A female chicken less than a year old is known as a pullet, while a very young male is a cockerel. When a cockerel is 8 to 12 weeks old and weighs 2 or 3 pounds, he is referred to as a broiler.:

• The average baby pig weighs in at about 2.5 pounds (.93 kg), doubling its weight during its first week of life. Adult males can reach about 500 pounds (186 kg), with sows at 450 (168 kg). Most hogs are off to market at about seven months old.

• Let’s not waste anything! A pig’s fat, skin, hair and glands are all used in manufacturing and included in products such as soap, shaving cream, explosives, fertilizer, glue and medicine, including insulin.

• If you’re feeding the Embden, the Toulouse, Sebastopol or the American Buff, you’re a goose farmer. If you’re eating your Christmas goose, most likely it’s of the Embden variety.

• The delicacy pate de foie gras is made from the livers of geese. In Europe, geese are forced to eat more food than normal to produce a large, fatty liver.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your moodier side might emerge this week. But the dark period should pass in time for the party-loving Lamb to go on a happy gambol with some very special people this weekend.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Yet again, you show your skill at being able to indulge in your love of the arts this week while still taking care of practical matters, including some still-unfinished business matters.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A potential change might appear to be what you’ve been looking for. In any event, consider both the negative as well as the positive possibilities before making any sort of decision.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Relationships continue to dominate your aspect this week on a mostly positive level, with just a few problem areas you can smooth over. Also, try to be flexible about travel plans.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being on center stage, and while you absolutely purr at the sound of all that praise, be careful not to take on too many commitments at the expense of time spent with loved ones.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might feel that you need to get involved in a matter concerning a friend or relative. But while the issues appear to be cut and dried, they might not be. Get more facts before you act.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion about a policy change could create heated reactions. Keep your mind open and resist joining in with naysayers unless they can show a real basis for their position.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While potential career changes warrant your inter-est, don’t ignore current job responsibilities. A personal relationship can also benefit from more of your attention.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t guess at what the facts might be if you hope to make the best decision possible. The wise course is to ask direct questions and act on the answers you get.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your efforts involving that pesky problem should soon show positive signs of being resolved. This would allow you to shift some of your focus in another direction.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) While you enjoy well-deserved praise for getting a difficult job done, there’s no time to relax. A new challenge looms. Expect more support from a once-strong critic.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still have explaining to do about your decision, but support grows as you continue to make your case. You also might want to start mak-ing plans for the upcoming holidays.

BORN THIS WEEK: You insist on making deci-sions based on facts, not on popular opinions. Have you considered a career in science?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read Linda’s letter (“Cat’s Aim Is Off the Mark”), and we also had the same problem. I bought a large plastic tote that was “above the aim” and used that in place of the lid by setting it up sideways and sliding the litter box into it. Problem solved! -- Sharon L., Kis-simmee, Fla.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We used a small doggie litter box to address this problem with an older cat at my work-place. We also placed pee pads under-neath and against the wall just in case her aim was way off. -- Ann in Rochester, N.Y.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I had this prob-lem with “Gabriel,” our 8-year-old Maine Coon. After observing him, I realized that as a senior cat, he couldn’t squat to pee as well as he used to and so he would overshoot the box. I finally made Gabriel a “custom” litter box that solved the issue

permanently. I bought a large Rubbermaid storage container and simply cut a doorway into the side of it for him. With the con-tainer’s almost 18-inch walls, there simply is no overshooting or spraying over the top. You have to use a box cutter or carpet knife to cut out the opening (be very careful not to slip and cut yourself). Both Gabriel and I are happy campers! -- Brett N., Atlanta

DEAR READERS: Thanks for writing, all of you! I’ve definitely had a lot of respons-es, suggesting that even though a cat miss-ing the litter box is usually a minor issue, it’s very, very common. Again, if you’re concerned about a cat’s spraying over the edge of the box, bring it to the vet for a checkup, just to rule out anything physically wrong.

The Cats That Couldn’t Shoot Straight

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):

• According to folklore, when sheep run back and forth, jump up and down, and fight as they frolic, it means a change of weather is on the way. Legend further maintains that if oxen are licking their forefeet, hens are taking dust baths, or frogs are croaking more than usual, rain is forthcoming. A chicken standing on one leg denotes impending cold weather.

• Roquefort cheese is made from the milk of the French Larzac, or Roquefort, sheep. The fat content in sheep’s milk is much higher than that of cow’s milk.

• What’s for dinner? If you’re having moussaka, you’re eating a dish of lamb and eggplant. Kibbe on the menu denotes ground lamb.

• When a female horse and a male donkey mate, the result is a mule. An old proverb says: “Mules make a great fuss about their ancestors having been horses.”

• The most common duck raised in the United States is the White Pekin. The Pekin duck, which originated in China, was introduced to America in the 1870s.

• Although most folks eat turkey in November, the month of June has been dubbed National Turkey Lovers’ Month. September is National

DOWN ON THE FARM (continued):

Chicken Month, May is National Egg Month, and October is National Pork Month. For those non-meat lovers, October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month, and November is Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month.

• Although we think of turkeys as gobblers, only the male toms actually gobble. The female hens make a clicking noise. A mature turkey will have about 3,500 feathers.

• A horse’s teeth take up more space in its head than its brain. While a male horse will have 40 teeth, the female’s mouth contains only 36.

• We generally mount a horse on its left side. This practice has been around since the days of ancient Greeks, when the soldiers carried their weapons on their left side, making it difficult to mount on the horse’s right side.

• How fast are farm animals? The maximum speed a pig can run is about 11 miles per hour (18 km/hr), while a chicken struts along at 9 miles per hour (14/km/hr). A wild turkey can reach a ground speed of 25 miles per hour (40 km/hr) as well as fly for short distances up to 55 mph (89 km/hr). Compare these with the world’s fastest animal, the cheetah, whose speed is about 70 mph (113 km/hr).

TIDBITS AND MUSIC:JOHN DENVER

With 14 gold and eight platinum albums to his credit, John Denver was one of the most popular artists of the 1970s. Follow along as Tidbits looks into the life of this gentle, down-home singer. • Although John Denver was born in New

Mexico, he didn’t stay there for long. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. into a military family, his father’s Air Force flight instructor position took them from place to place. As a youngster in Arizona, he sang in the Tucson Boys Choir for two years, and at age 11, was given a guitar that had belonged to his grandmother.

• Denver enrolled in college at the Texas Technological College in the school of architecture, but it didn’t take him long to realize that his future was in music. At age 20, he made the move to Los Angeles, and at 22, joined The Mitchell Trio and started his recording career. After three albums with the trio, he branched out on his own at age 26. His friends urged a name change, suggesting John Sommerville, but John loved Colorado so much, he opted to use its capital city for his stage surname.

• John Denver’s first album was “Rhymes and Reasons,” a 1969 production that featured one of his most famous compositions, “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which had been recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary two years earlier. After Denver’s own recording of the song was released, the other version rose to No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

• “Jet Plane” was closely followed by “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a Billboard No. 2 hit. In 1974 and 1975, Denver was a major player on the charts with four No. 1 hits, “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” “Annie’s Song,” “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” and “I’m Sorry.”

• “Annie’s Song” was written for his wife Annie Martell, whom he had met while performing at Minnesota’s Gustavus Adolphus College and married in 1967. He composed the song in ten minutes while riding a ski lift.

• Over the years, Denver recorded about 300 songs, with 200 of these being his own compositions. The state of Colorado named him their Poet Laureate in 1977, and he was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1996.

• Denver branched out into acting and was

The King is far from dead. The King lives. With apologies to Richard Petty, Jimmie Johnson has been king of the Sprint Cup Series for four years and seems unlikely to abdicate the throne. Maybe Petty’s King with a capital K, and Johnson’s just king with a little one.The latest victory, his 53rd, was at Dover International Speedway, where Johnson has won three of the last four Cup races.“The tire that Goodyear brought back -- it’s the same as it was in the spring -- blackened up the track in a hurry, but really made it challenging after 30 or 40 laps. ... I had to fall back on my dirt-racing background.”For the record, Johnson’s “dirt-racing background” wasn’t at Eldora or Knox-ville. It was through deserts. Johnson first made his reputation in off-road racing. At 35 years of age, Johnson, a native of El Cajon, Calif., has already won four Cup championships. Only two drivers, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, have ever won more. Neither ever won four in a row, an unprecedented achievement.

Now Johnson seems on track to make it five.Johnson isn’t boastful by nature, even though he has every right to be. He laughs easily but seldom jokes. Some find him boring off the track. But not on it. He opened the Chase with a 25th-place finish. Guess what? He opened it with a 39th in 2006 and went on to win the championship. His quick recovery at Dover was typical of past performances. He and crew chief Chad Knaus have forged a relationship that serves as a model for every other such combination in the sport. For much of the AAA 400, A.J. Allmend-inger dominated. Johnson bided his time and ended up rising to the front and stay-ing there for the final stages.“We played it smart,” he said. “He (All-mendinger) wasn’t ‘a Chase guy,’ so I didn’t feel good about letting him go, but when he got to me and put pressure on me, I let him by.“Come the end of the race, he wasn’t there to have to fight with.”

• Denver was a long-time advocate of the environment, campaigned consistently for its conservation, and reflected his love of nature in many of his songs.

• Denver’s love of flying eventually led to his death. As a pilot with over 2,700 hours of experience, he had mastered several ratings, both land and sea, single- and multi-engine, and Lear jet proficiency. Yet, in October of 1997, while piloting his recently-purchased Long-EZ plane, he crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Pacific Grove, California. Following cremation (along with his grandmother’s 1910 Gibson guitar), his ashes were scattered in his beloved Rocky Mountains.

Does Food Control Your Life? Fashion Show and Speakers

Vancouver, September 28, 2010: For those with an eating disorder, food is the enemy and every meal brings trepidation. Binging, purging and starving become daily habits. So how does one break free from this destructive cycle? Through specific and long term recovery programs.

Canadian StatisticsThere are 200,000 cases of eating disorders in British Columbia alone.Unfortunately, health insurance only covers a small portion of treatment costs (and includes only 7 facilities in Canada, most of which have waiting lists of 1 year). After that, families are on their own to care for their mother, daughter, sister, son or brother. Hospitals only have room for the most severe cases for a few weeks and private residential treatment centres can cost $1000 - $2,500 per day in Canada and the U.S.

Fashion Show & International SpeakersHow can we help them? Shelley’s Angels Society is putting on an all-sizes fash-ion show fundraiser with people who have recovered and clinicians in the field, for their third annual Until Your Heart’s Content. On top of that, the Center for Change is sponsoring author and musician Jenni Schaefer (Life Without Ed and Goodbye Ed, Hello Me, McGraw-Hill) from Austin, Texas and Michael E. Berritt, PhD (founder of The Center for Change) to do a presentation called The Heart’s Journey to Serenity and Peace, their only stop in Canada. Proceeds from this event will go towards a new equine therapy program (using horses to teach specific skills) in Richmond, as well as a bursary for someone recovering who needs finan-cial assistance.

JOHN DENVER (continued):

3rd annual Until Your Heart’s Content• Date: October 16, 2010 • Time: 7:00 pm (start of silent auction) • Location: Executive Inn, Burnaby (4201 Lougheed Highway) • Price: $20 • Buy Tickets from the Event Website.
