One old wives’ tale suggests that the reason the wedding band is worn on the fourth finger is because there was a vein that ran from that finger to the heart. This vein was called the Vena Amoris, or “vein of love.” The origins of the phrase “tie the knot” aren’t exactly clear, but historians do know that the symbolism of the knot has been associated with marriage since at least the 13 th century. 19 th century Finnish brides often wore dark colors for marriage. White weddings really are a more recent trend. Before the Victorian Era, brides certainly wore elaborate dresses, but not in a specified color. Those with less money simply wore their Sunday best. Although she wasn’t the first to do so, Queen Victoria wore a lavish white wedding gown when she married Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1840. Due to advances in photography, her wedding photos were highly publicized and seen by many, rich and poor – and like many royals before and after, her fashion sense was widely emulated. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Still operating under a full head of self-esteem makes you want to tackle a matter you had shied away from. OK. But be sure to arm yourself with facts before you make a move.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That smart move you recently made caught the attention of a lot of people, including some with financial deals to offer. Use your Taurean wari-ness to check them out thoroughly.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Shyness might keep you from asking for more information on a potentially important matter. But your curiosity grows stronger by midweek and gives you the impetus for data-gathering.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking on too many tasks may not be the wise thing to do at this time. You might overspend both your physical and emotional energy re-serves, and have to miss out on some upcoming events.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Try to keep your spending at an affordable level. Splurging now -- especially on credit -- could create a problem if your finances are too low for you to take advantage of a possible opportunity.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not approve of a colleague’s behav-ior during much of the week. But don’t play the judgmental Virgo card here. As always, check the facts before you assume the worst.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Coping with an old issue that has suddenly re-emerged could take a big toll on your emotional energies. Decide whether you really want to pursue the possibilities here.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) For all your skill in keeping your secrets safe, you could be unwittingly letting one slip out by the way you’re behaving in that new relation-ship. Are congratulations soon to be in order?

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good old-fashioned horse sense could help you get around those who unknowingly or delib-erately put obstacles in your way. Ignore the confusion and follow your own lead.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A puzzling attitude change in a colleague from friendly to chilly might stem from a long-hidden resentment suddenly bubbling up. An open and honest talk should resolve the problem.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This week, many ever-generous Aquarians might find themselves feeling an acquisitive urge. If so, indulge it. You’ve earned the right to treat yourself to wonderful things.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Expect to get a lot of advice on how to go about implementing your plans. But once you’ve sorted it all out, you’ll probably find that, once again, your way will be the best way.

BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy the quiet times of your life, but when you’re in the mood, you can throw a party everyone will want to go to.

Upon her engagement, she was presented with a tiny ring, now considered to be the smallest engagement ring on record.• The most expensive wedding ever? That would be the 1981 marriage of Sheik Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum to Princess Salama of Dubai. The price tag? $44 million.• The bachelor, or stag, party is said to date back to ancient Sparta.• In the event things go sour, it is the man who usually has legal rights to the engagement ring. An Australia woman was fined $15,250 AUD after throwing her engagement ring away when they called the whole thing off.• Another old wives’ tale states that if the younger of two sisters marries first, then the elder must dance barefoot at her wedding or risk becoming a spinster.• Ancient Romans would break a cake over the bride’s head to symbolize fertility.

HERE COMES THE BRIDE! (continued):• Dowries are an ancient practice and are even mentioned in the Code of Hammurabi from the 18th century B.C.• The longest marriage in recorded history was that of an Indian couple who had been married for eighty-six years and four months.• “Here Comes The Bride” is officially titled “The Bridal Chorus” and comes from the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner.

Layered BLT Salad

I took most men’s much-loved sandwich, the BLT, and transformed it into something that tasted great but didn’t come between two or three slices of bread. I can still hear the rave reviews.

4 cups finely shredded lettuce1 1/2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes1/4 cup purchased bacon bits4 slices reduced-calorie white bread, toasted and cubed1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese1/2 cup fat-free Thousand Island dressing1/4 cup fat-free mayonnaise1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes

In an 8-by-8-inch dish, layer lettuce, tomatoes, bacon bits, toast cubes and Cheddar cheese. In a small bowl, combine Thousand Island dress-ing, mayonnaise and parsley flakes. Spread dressing mixture evenly over top. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Divide into 4 servings.

Each serving equals: 175 calories, 3g fat, 10g protein, 27g carb., 684mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Starch, 1 1/2 Vegetable, 1/2 Meat.

7 DAYS A WEEK

Have you noticed that many of the streets on the lake side of Sorrento are named after WWI and WWII battles? One of those battles and street is Dunkirk. That battle was fought at the end of May and beginning of June seventy years ago this month. Churchill was on the verge of making a conditional surrender in the seemingly hopeless situation with hundreds of thousands of men trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk. There were only two and a half good flying days in the whole operation and changed the outcome. From May 27 to June 4th 338,226 men were rescued by 861 vessels, 243 of which were sunk during the operation. All the Allied troops escaped including 26,000 of the 65,000 French soldiers holding the Ger-mans back. Why is this little Sorrento street named after such a monumental event in his-tory? Maybe to help us remember.

NEIL DIAMOND

Singer, songwriter, actor and expert fencer – all these labels fit the well-known performer Neil Diamond. Follow along as Tidbits looks at the life of this music legend. • Descended from Polish and Russian immigrants, Neil Dia-mond was born in Brooklyn in 1941. While attending Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, he was a member of the school choir, along with his classmate Barbra Streisand. The two were not acquaintances at that time, but in 1978, more than 20 years later, they teamed up for a blockbuster duet, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers.” • Diamond first became interested in music when he was given a $9 acoustic guitar for his birthday, and at age 15, composed his first song, “Hear Them Bells.” He and buddy Jack Packer formed a singing duo, appropriately named Neil & Jack, and did some gigs at Long Island’s Little Neck Country Club. They even re-corded a single for Shell Records. But their association was short-lived when their song didn’t sell. • An accomplished fencer during high school, Diamond received a fencing scholarship to attend New York University. At NYU, he studied pre-med with the dream of becoming a laboratory biolo-gist and finding a cure for cancer. But a job offer with a $50-a-week salary from a music publishing company that came during his senior year led him to abandon those plans. • In 1965, Diamond hit the Billboard Chart for the first time, not as a singer, but as a songwriter. “Sunday and Me” was per-formed by Jay & the Americans and made the Top 20. Diamond also composed four songs that contributed to the success of the Monkees, including “I’m a Believer,” popular music’s Song of the Year in 1966.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you train a cat? -- Janice in Wheeling, W.Va.

DEAR JANICE: Sure, although I’m of the opinion that most cats train you. Seriously -- they learn, pretty early on, what “buttons” to push to get you to give them food or treats, let them out, pet them or stop typing a pet column and pay at-tention to him or her. But you can have the last laugh and train your cat to respond to commands or signals. Remem-ber that cats are very different than dogs in their approach to the world and in how they respond. In fact, you’ll want to somewhat mimic the way that your cat learns to train you: They observe you quietly, then test a few different methods of getting what they want and adopt the most suc-cessful one. It’s also important to note that cats don’t respond well to negative reinforcement. You can shake a can of pennies at them or hiss or yell “no!” when

a cat is doing something you don’t want it to do, and that might work in the short term, but mostly their response is to run away.If you’re training a cat to specifically do something on command, you need to use positive reinforce-ment almost exclusively. This is rewarding the cat with a treat, a stroke or a kind word immediately after it responds to the movement you’re trying to teach. The cat needs to develop a positive associa-tion with the activity.Keep training sessions short and somewhat spon-taneous. Most cats don’t last more than five or 10 minutes per session. And don’t get discouraged if your cat doesn’t “get” it after days or weeks. In-stead, be patient and look for new ways to make the connection with your cat.

Train A Cat? It’s Possible

On June 9, 1772, the British vessel Gaspee runs aground off the coast of Rhode Island while pursu-ing the Hanna, an American smuggling ship. That evening, John Brown, an American merchant an-gered by high British taxes on his goods, rowed out to the Gaspee with a number of other colonists and set the ship afire. When British officials attempted to prosecute the colonists involved in the “Gaspee Affair,” they found no Americans willing to testify against their countrymen.

On June 13, 1905, pitcher Christy Matthewson of the New York Giants throws the second no-hitter of his career to lead his Giants to a 1-0 win over the powerful Chicago Cubs. That year Matthewson won 31 games to just nine lost.

On June 12, 1920, Man O’ War wins the 52nd Belmont Stakes. His only career loss came in 1919 when his back was to the starting line at the begin-ning of one race. At that time, before the advent of starting gates, a rope was all that held horses back from starting their run.

On June 10, 1935, in New York City, two recover-ing alcoholics found Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), a 12-step rehabilitation program that eventually helps countless people cope with alcoholism.

On June 11, 1949, Hank Williams, Sr., makes his Grand Ole Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium. The audience called Williams out for six encores and had to be implored not to call him out for more in order to allow the rest of the show to go on.

On June 8, 1968, James Earl Ray, an escaped American convict, is arrested in London, England, and charged with the assassination of civil-rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Ray claimed he was innocent of King’s assassination and had been set up as a patsy by a mysterious man named “Raoul.”

On June 7, 1976, an article called “The Tribal Rites of the New Saturday Night,” by journalist Nik Cohn, is published in New York magazine. The ar-ticle detailed the struggles and dreams of an Italian-American disco dancer in Brooklyn. The block-buster movie “Saturday Night Fever” was based on the article.

You may consider the bikini to be a modern phe-nomenon, but in the ruins of Pompeii, which was buried by ash from an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D., there are murals depicting people in two-piece bathing suits.

Are you a librocubicularist? If, like me, you like to read in bed, then you are.

Academy Award-winning actress Bette Davis was evidently so concerned about the possibility of gaining weight between roles that in the 1940s she took out an insurance policy on her waist, in the amount of $28,000.

According to statistics from the Social Security Administration, about one-third of people who claim to be more than 100 years old aren’t tell-ing the truth. It seems that people age 75 and older tend to add years when asked how old they are, while those under age 75 tend to say they’re younger than they are.

Last year, much was made of the Obama family’s plan to adopt a dog. Many first families have had pets, though, and some presidents have not been content with a run-of-the-mill dog or cat. For in-stance, Thomas Jefferson kept two bear cubs in a cage on the front lawn of the White House, and Theodore Roosevelt had a zebra. An alligator was the pet of choice for John Quincy Adams, and James Buchanan kept an elephant. Jujiro Matsuda was a blacksmith before he found-ed the Mazda auto manufacturing company.

DON’T GET WET! (continued):

• The world’s wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

• If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

• While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canada’s wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

• If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with “wet snow” and “dry snow.” The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

• Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow! Buying or Selling? Call Steven

NEIL DIAMOND (continued):• Success as a singer came along in 1966 with “Solitary Man.” When the time came to consider using a stage name, the options of Noah Kamin-sky and Eice Chary were presented. After mull-ing it over, Diamond opted to use his own name, in honor of his grandmother who had recently died of cancer.• A tumor on his spine was discovered in 1979, and its surgical removal resulted in Diamond be-ing confined to a wheelchair for three months, followed by a walker and a cane. Chronic back pain has plagued him to this day. • Diamond’s acting debut was 1980’s “The Jazz Singer,” a remake of an old Al Jolson film. The movie’s music, including “Love on the Rocks,” “Hello Again” and “America,” was highly ac-claimed, but his acting ability was slammed. Diamond had the disappointing honor of be-ing the first recipient of the Worst Actor Razzie Award, and has never acted in a movie role since, although he has written several music soundtrack scores, including those for “Pulp Fiction” and “Donnie Brasco.” Diamond’s compositions for the soundtrack of the 1973 movie “Jonathan Liv-ingston Seagull” actually grossed more than the movie did. • Although Diamond composed “Sweet Caro-line” in 1969, it wasn’t until 2007 that he re-vealed that he had written it for Caroline Ken-nedy. Written in just one hour, he was inspired by a photo of her on the cover of Life magazine, dressed in equestrian riding garb. • If you’ve seen the 1991 film “What About

Bob?,” you’ve heard Bill Murray utter pro-foundly, “There are two types of people in the world: those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t.” Apparently, many do, as Diamond has sold over 92 million records, with 35 Top 40 singles and 18 platinum albums.

TIDBITS AND MUSIC:

THE BEE GEESFrom mellow ballads to disco, the Bee Gees have made their mark in the music field. Join Tidbits as we look at a group of brothers who have impacted music for four decades. • Barry Gibb was nine years old and his brothers,

twins Robin and Maurice, were six when they started their singing career in 1955. The trio began by singing popular hits at a Manchester, England, movie theater. Although the brothers were natives of England, the family moved to Australia while the boys were young and lived there eight years before returning to London in 1967.

• The trio wasn’t always known as the Bee Gees. They started out as the Rattlesnakes and later called themselves Wee Johnny Hayes & the Bluecats. It was later changed to the Bee Gees, referring to the Brothers Gibb.

• Pick your favorite – some of the Bee Gee’s number one hits include: “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” (their first No. 1 hit), “You Should Be Dancing,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “Jive Talkin’.” Most people won’t remember their first single, produced in 1963, “The Three Kisses of Love,” released in Australia. “How Deep Is Your Love” seems to be the most popular, since nearly 400 versions by other artists have been recorded.

• The Gibb Brothers are the only songwriters who have had a No. 1 hit in four different decades. They are also the only writers to achieve five songs in the Top Ten at the same time, a feat accomplished in 1977.

• The Bee Gees are sixth on the list of all-time top-sellers, behind Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and Paul McCartney.

• It was Robin’s vibrato and Barry’s high falsetto that gave them the distinctive sound that makes their music easily recognizable.

• The “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack was the high point of the Bee Gees’ career. The

1977 movie starring John Travolta featured three Bee Gees’ singles that rocketed to No. 1 on the charts. This disco music soundtrack became the highest-selling album in history to that date, a distinction it held until Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” came along. With sales of more than 40 million copies, “Fever” remains music’s best-selling soundtrack.

• Not only did the Bee Gees record many of their own compositions, they also wrote songs recorded by other top artists, such as Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Olivia Newton-John, Diana Ross and Destiny’s Child. They were the writers for the title song of the Broadway play and subsequent film, “Grease.” They were inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and have won eight Grammy Awards.

• 1978 was a big year for the Gibbs, with 12 of their compositions hitting the Top 40. At one point during the year, nine of the Top 100 were either written and/or performed by the group.

• Although the Bee Gees consisted of three brothers, younger brother Andy achieved fame as a solo act, frequently performing songs composed by his brothers. Andy’s life was unexpectedly cut short in 1988 at age 30, when he died of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Maurice, the group’s musical director, passed away suddenly in 2003 from a heart attack, just before he was to undergo surgery.

“I have refilled a large pump-top lotion dispenser with sunscreen. It is on a small table by our front door, and everyone is making a real effort this sum-mer to wear sunscreen every day. We always remem-ber when we go to the beach, but our faces, arms and legs are exposed to sun all the time, not just when we are in our swimming trunks.” -- G.L. in New Mexico

If you have a small ice-cream scoop, you can use it to measure out cookie dough. You will have more uniformly sized cookies, and they will cook better in the oven.

“I got a great deal on a beautiful coffee carafe at a garage sale. However, it smelled musty inside and had plenty of stains. I filled it twice with very hot water, then added a denture tablet. After letting it sit overnight, I used a baby-bottle brush to give it a quick scrub. It’s fresh and clean as new now.” -- K.I. in Ohio

“Seems there’s not much you can get for a penny these days, but I have found a great use for some of mine. I sewed a row into the bottom of my light sum-mer drapes. They put a slight weight on the billowy fabric and help it to hang super straight.” -- Y.S. in Idaho

“Little packs of sticky notes were invaluable in planning the reception seating at our wedding. We assigned different colors to groups, such as bride’s family, groom’s family, friends of the couple, etc., and wrote each person’s name on a note. It was easy to rearrange until we had properly balanced our seat-ing chart.” -- F.E. in Ontario, Canada

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Shutter Island” (R) -- Set in the 1950s, Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels. He and his partner (Mark Ruffalo) are investigating the mysterious escape of an inmate from an asy-lum for the criminally insane, a facility that’s more escape-proof than Alcatraz. Daniels is a man filled with inner torment: He watched while his wife died tragically in a fire, and during the war he was present at the liberation of the Dachau concentra-tion camp. The memories plague him in the form

of hellish hallucinations, hampering his ability to investigate the escape -- which appears to be a conspiracy involving the psychologists on staff -- and the possibility that the inmate may have been the victim of foul play. As the investigation and the hallucinations intensify, Daniels (and the audience) discovers there’s more than meets the eye about Shutter Island. The great thing about Martin Scorsese is that you go to his films expecting to see a masterpiece of cinema and more often than not, that’s what you get. But even if the film isn’t a masterpiece like “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull” or “Goodfellas,” you know that Scorsese’s second-tier movies (“Kundun,” “The Aviator”) are still 10 times better than most filmmakers’ best works. This is the case with “Shutter Island.” It’s not up to the standards of his greatest films, but it’s a pretty good psychological thriller.

“The A-Team: The Complete Series” (Unrated) -- To cash in on the release of this summer’s “A-Team” motion picture, the complete series is being released on DVD. For about a hundred and forty bucks you can get the whole shebang -- all five seasons on 25 discs -- packaged in the shape of the A-Team’s black van (with Mr. T at the wheel). I guess if you’re a diehard fan of the show who likes kitschy packaging, you won’t

mind ponying up $140; but considering that only the first two seasons were any good, I seriously pity the fool who falls for this crass, gimmicky cashgrab.

“Caddyshack” (R) -- This movie’s been out on DVD for about 10 years, but I believe this is the first time it’s gotten a high-def Blu Ray release. I don’t know about you, but if I’m gonna watch a lowbrow comedy about golf featuring a stuffed gopher puppet, it better be at 1080p resolution.

Corral Clutter Creatively

For the Legomaniac Scott boys and their friends, it was a dream come true when they woke up to the wondrous site of a gigantic Lego truck on the street in front of their house. Ryan, the driver and team member of the “Lego Experience Tour,” had no idea how the truck with more than 200 Lego figures emblazoned on its exterior would capture the hearts of the kids when he passed by on the way to set up the exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair. With three boys under the age of 8, the Scotts don’t actually buy Lego bricks by the truckload, but when Melissa invited me into her sons’ “Basement Lego Room” amidst the excitement that morning, I was all smiles. With Lego posters on walls, completed models on shelves and cool projects in process, it’s a dynamic gath-ering place for kids and their creativity. “But we finally had to come to grips with the clutter,” said Melissa, as she lifted a bin of wheel parts onto a shelf. “The kids were frustrated when they couldn’t find the right piece to complete a project.” That’s when they decided to sort the zillions of Legos strewn around the house, organize them by color and subject and keep them in one room. See-through plastic bins now house the reds, the grays and the blues, while plastic tackle-box-style containers with dividers store ladders, shields, animals and people. “Now that we’ve made order out of chaos, they can actually be more creative,” she says. “Plus, it makes cleanup less overwhelming at the end of the day.”Melissa thinks outside the Lego box when it comes to other clever clutter busters. Namely keeping track of electronic gadgets, gizmos and cords that can strangle a family’s living space.Cell phones, chargers, a camera and even a laptop land in a wide top drawer situated under a kitchen counter top. When a gadget needs charging, it is plugged into a surge protector, which sits in the back of the drawer. A 3-inch hole drilled through the back end of the drawer routes the power-strip cord to an outlet. Brilliant! No more messy cords and no more misplaced phones. Here are more clutter busters:--Arrange your child’s personal-care items such as hairbrush, barrettes and shampoo in portable plastic caddies or totes with handles. Paint names and decorate the outside. Store in bedrooms or under the bathroom sink.--Set a basket at the base of the stairs as a collect-all of everyday stuff such as books, shoes and toys. With just a single trip up the stairs, items may be returned to their proper places.
